,1 THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL -PAGE SIX Thursday, May 31, 1951 JOUHL - We've been a little behind schedule in keeping this column 'going the past few weeks. A number of readers have blamed It on our last column in which ve were so bold as to express ome personal views on the Mac-Arthur-Truman nightmare, but we can assure you that while our shoulders are not too broad, they can bear the weight of outside criticism our spine has been a little sore on the lower end for a few weeks, but it was in no way connected with the daily burden of argument. Before we get off the above subject, we are happy to know that Navyman "Dud" Jorgensen. son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Jorg ensen of Nehawka, goes along Tvith our thinking in that '"mess"' and he ought to know something THOMAS WALLING CO Abstracts of Title "Title Insurance" Plattsmoinii, Nebraska T7 . -if? w w - !tm;m. We would clip and reprint his letter that appeared in the Enterprise last week if we thought some of our critics could stand up under the shock. Getting back to this column. Thousands well not thousands, but hundreds well, Fred Rea anyway, asked us a few times why we didn't keep "The Thing" going. We didn't exactly run out of gas like the school teacher-preacher combination we re ferred to several weeks ago, but a combination of circumstances, both personal and business, has prevented us fromv taking the time to compile this stuff with out seriously interfering with our leisure. Never let business interfer with pleasure. Karl Grosshans came in the other day handing us a nice printing job for the Plattsmouth Sales Barn which he has built up to one of the most widely known in the state. Karl in formed us that bidders were on hand at last Monday's great horse sale from as far away as Torrington, Wyoming. Others were present from Iowa, the Da kotas, Minnesota, Kansas, Mis souri, with a number of horses sold to a buyer from Wisconsin. We sometimes think few of us here in the downtown section of the city appreciate what this livestock market means to the community each week. For years Grosshans, with the capable as sistance of Auctioneer Rex Young, has provided farmers a top outlet for surplus and fin ished livestock. Every week hundreds of persons ilock to this establishment on south Chi cago Avenue, with many a buck dropped off at local business establishments by families of buyers who come along to shop. It is shocking sometimes to learn of the lackadastical way in which some counties squander the taxpayer's money. Not long ago Bryan McDonald, county clerk, called for an estimate on election supplies to be included in the budget for the fiscal year 1951-52. Last election The Jour nal furnished these supplies at a total cost of $23 a precinct for both the primary and general election. Clerk McDonald in formed us that an out-of-town salesman had been in his office that day after an order for Cass County. This salesman informed i Bryan he had 14 counties In . Nebraska sewed up at $43 a i precinct. The Journal takes a j little pride in the fact that we've j saved Cass County $575.00 on its ! 23 precincts. But, we're more I pleased with the fact that Cass County officials are alert to the .'possibilities of making savings to the taxpayers oy cnanneung their needs through local con cerns. It isn't often our local courthouse officials fall victim to the glib tongue of a shrewd salesman. While down at Avoca the other Sunday attending that well planned and glowing tribute to Dr. Brendel, we met a couple of young fellows deep in reminisc ing of the past. Albert Schultz, Avoca, and John Ehlers, of Ber trand, the latter driving many long miles to pay his respects to the doctor. Albert and John informed this writer they had batched together for a couple of vears southeast of Avoca nearly 50 years ago when first starting their farm operations. It wasn't as lonesome a job as they would have us believe, however, as we learjned not far from this farm lived two fam ilies with attractive daughters. During this period some coniv ing was carried out as each wound up with a wife, with later years resulting in fine families. From appearances Albert gives us the impression that he had crowded John a little at the feed trough during those bach elor days from which he never fully recovered. In fact, it would take both John and this writer to stand up against one of those mid-Nebraska breezes and, at that, we'd probably come out second best. Circus Appealing To Youngsters; Crowds Small The Big Top has gone, but its thrills will continue in the minds of several hundred Plattsmouth and Cass county youngsters, many of whom were experienc ing their first glimpse of circus activities. While many of the older fans appeared somewhat disillusion ed, the gleam in the eye of any one of the children witnessing the thrilling acrobatics, high flying performers, wild animals, especially the elephants, and the many daredevil stunts, was excitement enough for the par ents. The circus played to a small audience in the afternoon, while the big tent was about three fourths full for the evening performance. Journal Want Ads Pay. LIKE NOODLES ? CAN I DRIVE THIS CAR?
