fHE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI -WEEKLY JOURNAL PAGI TWO Section B Thursday, May 17, 1951 REV. ROBERT H. HARPER . -4 The United Kingdom II Ssmuel 5: 1-5; 8:15: I Corin thians 22: 17-19 Memory Selection: Psalms 27:1 4 THE DAY'S LESSON is or.e of - history, with the opportunity cfrrawing useful truth. The first thing to be learned is that the United Kingdom was of brief du ration, having only two kings David and Solomon. This was due to"the- folly of one man, Keho boam, the son of Solomon. Ponsider David's attitude to ward God. While his personal life wffs often at variance to God's will, the purpose of David as a rJir was to honor God in the kingdom and bring his people to sincere. veneration of the Lord. The democratic processes in Israel, so early in human history, are examples unto rulers and peo p?f today. The people entered into a .covenant with David. He became an ancient constitutional monarch, trying to rule for the good of he people. The record state. ''David etecuted justice and righteousness vluIo all his people." Toward the end cf his reign the ged king, preparing fcr Solomon shis succesor. urged the people t support Solomon in building a temple unto God. David is an ex ample unto ail 'who govern today aad his history should be instruc tive to the people of any nation, i.-piring them to high ideals of government, the wise choice of rttlers, and th; highest loyalty to exalted standards of citizenship.
