Now, one of the biggest problems fac ing the medical profession to day is making those added years healthful, happy and useful. That was the opniion of more jthan 800 physicians from all over the country who gathered here for a medical conference on the problems of advancing years. Throughout the meeting, the warning was sounded again and again that something must be done to give men and women not only long life, but a healthy, happy and useful old age. The sad truth is that man's life has been extended beyond his present capacity to enjoy it as a useful citizen, the medical authorities agreed. For in pro longing life, science also pro longed suffering and misery all the chronic illnesses and disa bility which plague mankind in the twilight years. New Era Possible The situation sounds gloomy. But most of the authorities agreed that if old age infirmi ties are conquered, the world will enter into a golden era. peo pled with older, more mature and wiser men and women who may be " able to devise a world of peace. Geriactrics the study of old age and its ailments is large ly unexplored. But authorities warned that the problems and disorders of "the second forty now. There are new more than 10, 0C0.000 people in the United States more than 65 years of age and the population of old folks is growing rapidly with each passing year. In another decade, millions more men and women will become vulnerable to the tragedy doctors refer to as the "semi-parasitic exist ence" common in the later years. "Longevity is here," Dr. Ed- ward J. Stieglitz of Baltimore ' and Washington told the meet- hag. "We are indeed entering j an 'age of age.' But old age ! with continued vigor, usefulness and enjoyment of hie is attain- ed only by a few. Prolonga tion of life in the relatively un fit may some day jeopardize the survival of the fit.
