THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL PAGE EIGHT Monday, November 20, 1950 Effectiveness Of Law Repeal Still In Doubt Effective date of the repeal by referendum of the one cent ad ded gasoline and the. increased motor vehicle fees is consider ably in doubt, according to Nebraska state house sources. Attorney General C. S. Beck informed Clay Wright, chief of the motor fuels division of ag riculture, that he was required to continue collecting the tax until a proclamation is issued by the governor announcing the two referred bills have been re pealed by vote of the people. The letter of the attorney general said that after the can vass of the state vote by the canvassing board the governor has 10 days in which to issue the proclamation in the same manner as on "presidential el ectors." Deputy Attorney General Wal ter Nolte said he was not in formed on the legal research made. He said he would confer with Beck. An ooinion has been given that the vote on elective state officers is to be tabulated by the canvassing board and de-j livered to the legislature for canvass. The opinion did not state whether presidential el ectors are similarly canvassed or not. If a legislative canvass is re quired, the issuing of licenses for motor vehicles in 1951 will become quite a problem for county treasurers. Vehicle own ers undoubtedly would wait un til January when the lower fees would become effective to buy licenses. Licenses become due Jan. 1 and delinquent Feb. 1. It has been to custom for many auto owners to make li cense applications in Decem ber. Date of annullment of the one cent gasoline tax also will mean a loss of man1' thousands of dollars to highway imnrove ment or savings of a similar amount to motorists, whichever way the taxpayer may consider it. Nolte said that the office had not been requested to give an ooinion on the effective date of the referendum proposals, and as a result no one had locked into the law except Beck in answer to another-question.
