Mrs. Garfield Dunning gave devo tions using the topic "That Healing Gift He Lends." Mrs. R. C. Humiston had the lesson, the subject being in keeping with the devotionals. Six members of the Dietz Memorial Church Society of Omaha were guests. The can dle lighting ceremony was very impressive, as each department secretary lighted a candle re prsenting the achievement made during the year. This service was under direction of Mrs. Chas. Walden as promo tional secretary. "The Society voted to serve Boys and Girls County lunch con to be held here on October 23rd. "Refreshments were served by a group from Dorcas Circle, Mrs. Milton Muncie, Mrs. M. Keider Inig, Mrs. Herman Hough, Mrs. Dun York. Mrs. Al Nierste, Mrs. Garfield Dunning. Mrs. Wm. Wetenkamo. Guests At Alwin Home On Sunday The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Alwin was the scene of a very pleasant family party on Sunday. The day was featured by a delicious dinner that hon ored the birthdays of Philip Rihn, Mrs. Vernie Younker and son. Cary. It was also the wed ding anniversaries of Mr. and Mrs. Rihn, Mr. and Mrs. Alwin. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Younker, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hart. During the day the members of the party received a telephone call from Mr. and Mrs. George Perry of Flagstaff. Arizona. Others besides the guests of honor were: Mr. and Mrs. Har old Hart, Hazel Burley, Orin Davis, Omaha. Heineman.wide ly known over the state for her activities in Garden club circles of Nebraska as well as her out standing work in the care and first part of the week, and was given a very pleasing recogni tion for her efforts. Mrs. Heineman was in at tendance at the state meeting of the Federated Garden clubs of Nebraska at Lexington, the Mrs. Paul T. Heineman first part of the week, has been named the state secretary of the Garden clubs of the state. This is a well deserved honor as Mrs. Heineman has been untir ing in her work in study and advancement of the clubs over the state. She has served as the bird life chairman of the organization for the past year, through her efforts a great deal of interest has been created in the orotection and care of the I birds that make Nebraska their home. In addition to her other acti vities Mrs. Heineman is serving as the president of the Presby terian tederation and has been active in various groups. Ernest Hilds Visit With Son Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hild and family, Betty, Dale, Robert, Rol land and Richard, were at Fort Riley, Kansas. Sunday where they visited for the day with their son. Pvt. Leroy Hild, now I a member of the armed forces at the Kansas post, on their way they drove through Lincoln and were accompanied by Miss Leora Jacobson of that city. Leroy entered the armed ser vice September 4th and has since that time been located at Fort Riley. He is attached to the Engineers and has four weeks of basic training ahead of him. The family enjoyed dinner at the mess hall at Fort Riley and enjoyed seeing the fine camp, one of the largest army posts in the central west. Engagement Announced Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fahr lander. Nebraska City, announce the engagement of their daugh ter, Elinor Jean, to Richard D. Elinor Jean Fahrlander Mougey. son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Mougey, Union. Miss Fahrlander teaches District 80, Nehawka. Mr. Mougey left Monday to take his basic training in the Air Corp. No date has been set for the wedding. Return Home From North Africa Post Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Baguet have arrived in the United States. They called Mrs. Ba guet's parents, Mr. and Mrs Harold Gaines of this city, frorr Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Wed nesday evening. They are visit ing Mr. Baguet's mother r Pittsburgh and will arrive by plane in Omaha Monday, Octo ber 16th. They will spend a week or ten days in Plattsmouth. Mr. and Mrs. Baguet havf spent the past two years in Port Lyauety, French Morocco. VISIT AT OMAHA Mrs. C. O. Carlburg has re turned after two weeks' stay in Omaha at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. A. Minnear. Mr. Minnear and family. Mrs. Carlburg has been caring for the family and household while her daughter was in the hospital for an operation. Thursday, October 12 The Fairview Woman's club will meet with Mrs. Lorenz Ro loff, Thursday, October 12th. Hostesses, Mrs. Ben Speck and Mrs. Lorenz Roloff. Monday, OctODer 16 The regular meeting of the W. C. T. U. that was to have been held on Monday, October 9th, has been postponed until Monday. October 16th, at the home of Mrs. O. C. Hudson. Garden Clubs In Highway Plan The Federated Garden clubs of Nebraska at their meeting at Lexington the past week set up plans for the beautificaticn of the highways of the state. Mrs. Louis Hansen, of Platts mouth. president of the local garden club told of the cam paign for the creation and des ignation of the Blue Star high way. She announced erection of the first marker in the state at Plattsmouth on highwav No. 75. now designated as the Blue Star highway throueh Nebraska. This highway is dedicated to the men and women that served in World War II. Two Hastings garden clubs received first prize awards for year books, the Flower Lovers' Club and the Hastings Garden Club. Hastings Garden Club also re ceived the civic project award Mitchell Garden Club and the Flower Lovers' Club. The Scotts Historian awards went to the bluff Garden Club received the Pearle Parkinson silver atten dance trophy. Former Union Resident Here T. J. McQuin. a native son of Union, is enjoying a visit with relatives and friends in this lo cality. Mr. McQuin arrived Tuesday in Union, flying from Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he has been visiting for several months with a daughter, Cap tain Iola McQuin. of the U. S. Army Nurse Corps. He was joined here by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McQuin of Pasadena, Calif., for a visit with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Donald McQuin, Mrs. R. H. Shafer, Mrs. Mitchell Rich at Union and vi cinity, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Lowell McQuinn and family of this city. Mr. McQuin was at Omaha over the weekend visiting his sister. Mrs. Delia Williams an family. Diggs Family Visit Missouri Mr. and Mrs. Glen Diggs and family of this city were visitors over Sunday at the home of rel atives at Bolckor, Missouri. They were visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harve Diggs, par ents of Glenn and with Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Wales, parents of Mrs. Diggs. The occasion was a reunion of the members of the Disgs family, a sister and brother-in law, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Nie, of Downey. California, coming for a visit at the old home. Mr. and Mrs. Nie are to be here later to visit at the Glen Diggs home and Louisville with the Clarence Diggs family. Manley Visitors In City Saturday . Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Her man Dall and daughter, Mrs Tim Finney and Timmy, were in Plattsmouth for a few hours looking after some business matters. They report that Mr and Mrs. Herman Flaming, of Oshkosh, the former a nephew of Mrs. Dall. had been visiting in Manley. Mr. Flaming is a member of the higway patrol in the west part of the state. Visitors At The Mike Tritsch Home The home of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Tritsch in this city has featured a family gathering the past week, their son, Dr. Mar vin Tritsch being here for a visit with the home folks. The last of the week Mr. and Mrs. Vern Nolin of Huntington Park. Cali fornia, and Mrs. Frank Palacek of Berwyn. Illinois, have been here to join the family group. GOES TO SERVICE Fred C. Hobbs, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Hobbs, departed Sat urday for Fort Francis E. War ren, Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he will report for duty in the Air Corps. Mr. Hobbs served in World War II and has been re called for service as he was in specialized work while in the service. The family will remain here while he is in service. Jeli nek of Los Angeles, California, were here Tuesday to enjoy a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Swatek and Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Kalina, as well as at the Don C. York home. Mrs. Swa tek and Mrs. Kalina are sisters of Mr. Jelinek and Mr. York a brother of Mrs. Jelinek. The visitors have been enjoy ing a real vacation that has tak en them over a great deal of the country. They made the trip from California to New Or leans where they had the pleas ure of visiting the old French Quarter, a ride on the Missis sippi river, viewing the great Long bridge over the river. They then visited at Jacksonville, Florida before turning north. At Washington, D. C. they had a few days, visited the capitol building, the various depart ments of government, Mt. Ver non and the Washington tomb, and the Washington monument. One of the greatest thrills for Mr. Jelinek was a visit at Alex andria. Virginia, where he at tended the Masonic lodge of which George Washington had been a member and master. Philadelphia was another his torical spot visited, seeing the Liberty bell, visiting the contin ental congress, rich in the his tory of the past. New York City was another always to be re membered places, visited on the trip. Also Times Square with its great white way. In New York they found the night clubs, restaurants, theatres and all places of entertainment crowd ed. They of course visited the Empire State building and saw many places of interest. A feature of the trip to Char ley was the sea food markets at New Orleans and New York, his business as steward on the Union Pacific made this right down the alley for him. One of the high spots was the trip to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. It had been a long time since their honeymoon, but Charley and Ferris really had a big thrill over this favorite spot of the newlyweds. Af'ir it was all said and done. Charley says he likes to still measure the width of the walk up high school hill. ST. PAUL'S GUILD The general meeting of the St. Paul's Guild will be held Fri day, October 13th. at 8 p. m. at the church parlors. Eldon Braley of Grand Island was in the city the last of the week to visit at the home of Sat. and Mrs. Eldon Keyes and family. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. O. B. Lupardus, presi dent of the club. Roll call was answered by telling how to care for and win ter bulbs. Mrs. Edna Thimgan joined our club at this meeting. Election was held and all of ficers were re-elected as follows: President Mrs. O. B. Lupar dus. Vice-President Mrs. Martha Kruse. Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. A. J. Tool. Project Leaders Mrs. Buzzy Gakemeier and Mrs. Chester Elseman. News Reporter Mrs. Ferd Brunkow. Music Leader Mrs. Leo Rikli. Reading Leadre Mrs. J. E. McHugh. Mrs. Leo Rikli and Mrs. Ferd Brunkow presented the lesson "When Christmas Comes This Year." Several articles from door sprays, candles and hold ers, to popcorn-cake and candy which they had prepard were shown and sampled. Our next meeting will be Oc tober 26th at the home of Mrs. Martha Kruse. Martha Carneal Receives Rating Miss Martha Frances Carneal received an A rating for piano in an audition August 30th held in Omaha. Martha has been notified that she is to appear on the radio program sponsored by Schmoeller and Mueller "Stepping Stones to Stardom" heard over KOIL at 11:30 a. m., Saturday, October 14th. She began her piano instruc tions four years ago with Mrs. Kittie Roberts. For the past year Martha has been a student of Mrs. Roy Cole. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. John Carneal and al granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. wm. t. wetenKamp ol this city. Bellevue Parties Married Thursday Thursday afternoon at the of fice of Judge Raymond J. Case the marriage of Lee Gerald Matheson and Mary Magdeline Friffis occurred. Judge Case read the marriage lines and the service was witnessed by Estella Rutherford and Miss Thelma Kruger, clerk of the court. Riley Sunday a party of Platts mouth people were visitors at Fort Riley, Kansas, enjoying a few hours with Pvt. Wilour Claus, who is now on duty at the army post. Louis' Baumgart, Mrs. Wilbur Claus and children and Frank Claus were there to visit the young soldier. With Louie, it was a renewal of old times, as he trained at Funston and Fort Riley back in 1917. He was a member of the ammunition train of the 89th Division then in training. The visitors enjoyed the day with their husband, father, son and nephew.
