They "were enroute home from a visit ."in Illinois and Iowa with rela tives. " Mrs. McClusky is a sister of JVIrs. Fcrrie and this was the 'first visit the sisters have had ;in twenty-five years. - .Mr. McClusky is an instructor lat the University of Oregon at Eugene. While here the visitors were -callers at the Carl Ulrich and "Carl Chriswiser homes, Mrs. Mc Iclusky being a cousin of the Jadies. -Plattsmouth People Return Mr.and Mrs. F. L. Sweem and "Mrs- -W. A. Nord returned Sat urday from a very pleasant three.weeks vacation on the west coast.- They first visited at Seat tle, Washington, with a brother .ot Mr. Sweem, spending a week -in that section of the country. Mrs. Nord visited an old friend, "there? then went to Lso Angeles Ito visit relatives. Mr. and Mrs. J3weelh were driven from Seattle -to Port Angeles, then down the beautiful redwood highway to ,San Francisco, where they vis ited Mrs. Sweem's brother. Glen Hickson and family in Richmond also touring through the bay area. They met Mrs. Nord at Richmond and all returned via .the S. P. and U- P. railroads to Omaha. They were -mranied by Mrs. Edna Mc Williams and son Larry of North i ,aut. rrancis McWiiliams and wife met them at Brownsville, Texas. They drove 2,500 miles through Mexico by car and found the country very different and most of the peoples way of liv ing very foreign to ours. They spent three days at Acapulco. world famous resort and also visited the pyramids at Teoteh ciacan which were built by the Aztec Indians centuries before the arrival of the Spaniards in Mexico. The banana season was on and they were able to observe the picking and shipping of this fruit. On their return trip they took an airliner from Mexico City back to the border at Browns ville, Texas. Cullom Busy Bees Meeting For their first year of club work at the County Fair, the girls made a fine showing in exhibiting some of their sew- i ing they had completed for 1950. The ribbons won were 10 blue, 18 red and 8 white. In competing in the Song Con test at the fair which had the largest enrollment of entries ever entered at the Fair, the Busy Bees won the second blue rib bon for the large group. The quartet, Merna Jean Petereit, Marilynn Stoehr. Patty Todd and Nola Jane Weiss won the 2nd prize. A beautiful float was made by the help of both of the Busy Bees, and Nimble Fingers clubs and entered in the parade at the Fair on Thursday evening which took first prize. (2 (jltawv Reception For Teachers Tuesday Night Tuesday evening the Central school auditorium was the scene of one of the .pleasant social affairs of the school year, that of the reception tendered the new teachers of the school by the board of education and fac ility. Presenting the musical portion of the evening program was Frank A. Cloidt. veteran retired member of the board of educa tion, well known vocalist. Mr. Cloidt sang "The Old Refrain" by Kreisler and "One Alone" from "The Desert Song Mrs. H. O. McClusky was the accom panist. Merabers of the party spent the evening at "Dub Bridge", serving to pass the time most pleasantly. In the contest for the men, Herman Tiekotter was high with William Floyd, new principal, second and Clair Shellenbarger, consolation. In the ladles playing Mrs. Zelphia Seward won first, Miss Diane Manning, second and Mrs. Wil liam Floyd, consolation. Members of the program com mittee. Miss Pearle Staats, chair man. Miss Rose Prohaska. Miss Amelia Martens and Miss Clara Weyrich. arranged the delight ful social evening that intro duced all members of the teach ing force and the board of edu cation. It was also very pleas ant that all members of the faculty and board of education were present with their wives and husbands. Refreshments were served at an appropriate hour by the com mittee composed of Miss Naomi Owen, chariman, Merle Stewart, Jessie Whalen and Gerald Clay burn. Marquardt Reunion Held at Avoca Avoca (Special to the Jour nal) The Marquardt family held their annual reunion at the home of Mrs. Emma Ra- walt. Sunday, September 10th, Henry P. Marquardt, 88, the only surviving member of the original family that came to the United States by sailboat in 1854, was present. The trip to the United States required six weeks. There were forty-eight of the members in attendance. Those attending were: H. P. Woman's Guild To Hold Meeting The circles of the Guild of the St. Paul's Evangelical Re formed church will meet on Tuesday, September 19th at 8 p. m. as follows: Circle 1 meets with Mrs. Ford Heim, Mrs. Ben Speck in the church parlors. Local People in Airplane Trip Mr. ar)d Mrs. Glen Daniels of this city enjoyed the week end by a plane trip to several places in Nebraska. On Sunday they flew to York, Nebraska, where they attended the York county annual air races. Labor Day Mr. and Mrs Dan iels flew to Walthill. Nebraska, where they visited the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Beaudette. The occasion was the birthday of Mrs. Roy Cunningham of Sioux City, Iowa, mother of Mrs. Daniels. Other relatives pre sent were: Mrs. Rolland Beau dette and children, Sharon and Connie, Mr. and Mrs. Marlowe Tipton and children, Terry and Marlowe, Jean Ann Cunningham and George Beaudette. S. Y. Smith Given Birthday Party S. Y. Smith, residing on South 6th Street, was surprised Sat urday evening, September 9th. by a group of some fifteen neigh bors who came to help him celebrate his eightieth birthday. Cards were played and the even ing spent socially with the guest of honor. Mr- Smith was the recipient of birthday re membrances as a reminder of this event. Refreshments were served, closing a most pleasant evening. Take Part in Booster Trip Taking part in the booster parade Saturday and assisting in the entertainment program were Mr. and Mrs Wayne Lewis and son, Wayne, Jr., Mrs. Fran cis Casey and Kay. This was an added feature, as the group gave a very clever musical act, that pleased the crowds at the various towns visited. Wayne Gorton also had a car in the caravan and his name was omit ted from the published list. Missouri Guests Visit in City Mr. and Mrs. James V- Moore, of Hamilton, Missouri, have been visiting this week in Platts mouth as guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Floy Moore. The men are brothers. Mr. James Moore is a member of the Mis souri house of representatives from Caldwell county, a post that he has held for several terms. Choosing as their objective for the year, that of the improve -t and b , , oar- started their plans for this work. Landscaping of the park grounds is one of the aims of the club, also the installing of playground equipment for children. In gen eral the plans will call for the creating of a real summertime resort for the residents of the , city. One of the entertainment fea tures of the meeting was the sinking by the Andrews sisters and was very much appreciated by the membership. Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting by members of the social commit tee of the. club. Historical Society Meet The Cass County Historical Society will meet at the Hotel Plattsmouth on Wednesday. Sep tember 29. at the noon hour. An interesting program will be furnished- The pioneer history of Elmwood, Nebraska will be the main topic. Mr. -Dudley Leavitt will give the history of Elmwood as prepared by Mrs. Mary Linhart. Mr. Willard Clapp and wife will also be at the meeting and give some in cidents concerning the early history of Elmwood. Make a special effort to attend this meeting and bring a friend with you. Program Committee. Robert Martins Enjoy Visit Here Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marlin of Long Beach. California, arc here for the King Korn Karni val. visiting at the home of Mr. Martin's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin, as well as with other relatives. Tuesday the visitors and mem bers of the Martin family were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin. WTe practiced for council fire which will be held Sunday, September 10. Council fire was held Sunday evening at 8 p. m. at the Meth odist Episcopal church in the Memorial room. The council fire was held be fore the open fireplace- The girls passing their wood gatherers rank were Janice Wiles Brenda Ofe, Rosemary Nelson. Patty Carr, Jeannie New-ton, Lois Gapen, Alice Vroman and Karon Jacobs. They received their rings and beads for .honors they had earned. Mrs. Howard Davis, president of Campfire Guardian Associa tion spoke to the girls. Refreshments were served to parents and friends who at tended the council fire. We wrote a letter to Carol Wilson, who once belonged to our group. She is moving to Minnesota- We also wrote down some honors that we could do. We got our mem bership card and our Flame. S2.98 ATE ONE TOONE Hinky-Dinky h Picnic Proves Great Success Sunday the Sokol park, near the Platte river, north of Platts mouth, was the scene of the annual picnic of the staff mem bers of the Hinky-Dinky stores and the employes of this large store system- The grounds were filled from mid-forenoon until the close of the party in the afternoon, with something doing every minute of the day for both young and old. The picnic opened at 11 o'clock altho the boys from the various stores of the system, were busy from early morning in getting the arrangements ready for the day. The program opened at 2:30 following the refreshments and lunch. Announcement was made of the officers of Hinky-Dinky Employes Association, including Miss Pauline Wilson of this city, named as a director. Softball, horse shoe pitching, games and races provided the entertainment for the day. Many of the local employes from store No. 24 were on the committees that helped make the event such a success, Herb Baumgart was on the kitchen detail from noon to 1 o'clock, with Jack Highfield of store No. 4 serving. Tom Rohan was on the miscellaneous foods com mittee from 1 to 2, while Art Ofe was helping with the re freshments from 1 to 2 o'clock. Pauline Wilson was chairman of the children's committee from 2 to 3 p. m. Nick Newman of the Omaha office served as the master of ceremonies while Cholm Houghton, editor of the Hinky-Dinky News, was one of the general committee. RETURN TO SOUTH Mr- and Mrs. Russell Perry of Harlingen, Texas, who have been visiting in this city at the home of Mrs. Addie Perry, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Don C. York, have re turned home. Mr. Perry is a son of Mrs. Perry a brother of Virgil and Mrs. Perry, a niece of Mrs. Don York.
