Mrs. Henry Mastman Journal Correspondent Miss Marlene Hennings was elected by popular vote to be Miss Avoca at the Cass County Fair. Miss Elaine Rippe and Miss Marilyn Akeson, her ladies in waiting. They appeared on a float which was planned by an appointed , committee and helpers. The committee received many fine compliments as it is a big undertaking. They plan to enter the float in the Otoe County Fair at Syracuse. Mrs. Anna Harshman came home from the hospital last eek. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dankleff returned home from their vaca tion to the Black Hills and Wyoming. Rev- and Mrs. Burger and Mike returned home Friday from Manhattan and Smith Center, Kansas where they spent most of their vacation. Rev. Berger also occupied the pulpit at Man hattan Sunday. The Holy Trinity Guild held their games party Tuesday even ing at the Guild hall. Prizes at cards went to Mrs. Louis Ruhge, Miss Meta Mueller, Dr. J- W. Brendle and Frank Royal. Mrs. Ted Heil and children Russel, Iowa are visiting her mother Mrs. Caroline Marquardt. Mrs. Anna McDonald of Lin coln visited her sons and family Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDonald last week. Mrs. Pearl Vette is staying with Mrs. Gorder at Weeping Water for several weeks. Mrs. Martha Ruge attended the Ganzel reunion at Steinhart park at Nebraska City Sunday. There were 95 in attendance. Mrs- W. M. Ottens was the old est member present, age 92. They have set the second Sunday in August for their reunion next year. Mr. and Mrs. John Stubben dick returned Tuesday from their vacation in New York. Mrs. Pearl Vette and son Vaden were at Seward Sunday where they attended a dinner honoring Mrs. Bert Douty of Los Angeles California, also present were Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Mar shall and daughter of Hastings. Ladies Aid met in the church parlors Thursday with Mrs. Maurius Nelsen and Mrs- Robert McDonald. The business meet ing was presided by Mrs. Paul Wolph. Reports of committees and officers were presented as this was the last meeting of the old year. Mrs. J. H. F. Ruhge led the devotional part. "The Light of the World" was the scripture and also carried out on the altar was six white can dles surrounding a map of the world. Two songs were led bv Mrs. Henry Maseman. Mrs. Dena Ruge. past president conducted installation service of the new officers and committees chair men each were presented red and yellow roses. Mrs. Calira Cars ten, newly installed presi dent took the chair and asked the cooperation of everyone in her new office. The jars of fruit brought for the orphans home are to be packed this week. Since there was no hostess for the new year. Mrs. Fred Mar quardt and Mrs. Caroline Mar quardt offered to take the first meeting which is September 14. Mrs. Ted Heil and Mrs. Anna McDonald were visitors. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Webb. Wichita, Kansas visited Rev. and Mrs. Berger- several days last week. The ladies are sisters. On Saturday and f'unday Myron Colt, a cousin of Smith Center, also was a house guest. School opened Monday at Avoca with six new beginners, 25 in high school. 40 elementary. Mrs. Nutzman and Mrs. Minder man are again in the kitchen nnd Mr. Ruhge the janitor. On September 7 a reception will be held in the school house spon sored by the Avoca Womans club to meet the new teachers and renew acquaintances with the ones returning again this year. .--Mrs. Raymond Rippe and twins rteurned home from the hospital Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hallstrom and Jack returned home Tuesday from Lake Worth Florida. Reminder to Veterans by V. A. Cited Reminders for veterans plan ning to attend school this fall under the GI bill were issued Thursday by Ashley Westmore land, Lincoln regional office manager. The reminders: 1. Veterans planning to con tinue the same course at school need not contact the VA, but make certain the school has room for them. 2. Those continuing in the same course, but a different school, should obtain a supple mental certificate of eligibility from the VA. 3. Veterans changing a course of study from one field to anoth er for the first time, may do so by applying to the VA for a sup plemental certificate of eligi bility. Same anDlies to those who have discontinued or com pleted the GI bill training and wish to make a first change to a different general field. 4. Those who have changed courses of study once and wish to do so again, should apply to the VA for advisement and guid ance. The agency will deter mine through this whethej- the veteran has need for the new course and the aptitude neces sary to complete it. Under the law. automatic approval comes if the VA doesn't arrive at a decision within 45 days after application. The veteran, how ever, must appear at the ap pointed time for advisement and must have cooperated. 5. Veterans planning to start training this fall for the first time, should apply to the near est VA office for an original cer tificate of eligibility. Name of school and course must be in cluded, together with a photo static copy of discharge papers. The Lincoln regional office is at Twelfth and O streets. Lincoln. 6. Mr. and Mrs. George Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Thompson and their grandchildren, Edward and Gloria Jean Thompson, drove to Maryville, Mo., on Tuesday to attend the funeral services of a cousin of the Thompsons. Murray was well represented at the county fair at Weeping Water last week, both in at tendance and exhibits. A trophy was awarded to Mrs. Fred Hild and to Martin Sporer for the most points received . on their exhibits. Husband Gets Even CHARLESTON, W. Va.' (UP) A husband got even when police raided a house and arrested sev en women on gambling charges including the man's wife. The women were pitching bottle cavs for stakes that totaled $1.75. Of ficers said the husband com plained to retaliate for an as sault warrant sworn out by his wife.
