Eighth Grade Promotional Exercises Held Wednesday evening the stu dents of the eighth grade of the city school system held their promotional exercises at the high school auditorium before a capacity house of relatives and friends. The processional for the en try of the class was played by Jo Ann Egenberger, and to the strains of the march, the young people entered and took their i places on the stage, where they were to complete one of the important parts in their school history. Superintendent T. I. Friest presided over the gathering and introduced the various speakers and participants in the program of the evening. The invocation was offered by Dr. H. G. McClusky, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. The brass sextette of the eighth grade was presented, composed of Jon Schuetz, cornet; Harold Demaree, cornet: Bette Janecek, French horn; Shirley Duda, trombone; Patty Painter, baritone; Richard Glaze, tuba. The group gave a splendid presentation of selec tions from the music of Steph en Foster, showing a very fine musical appreciation in the manner that the selections were given. History of the class was given by Patricia Brown, the speak er, detailing the work of the pupils since they first enter ed school. This was well pre pared and given in a most pleas ing manner by the young stu dent. Rev. E. C. Williams, pastor of the First Methodist church, the speaker of the evening, had as his subject, "Adventure Unlimit ed," in this address carrying to the young people a message of the opportunities that were theirs in the world of higher education in the high school 4 that they were about to enter. Mrs. Peari Mann, cast resent of the local D. A. R. chapter, made the presentation of the Citizenship Awards to Jackie Reno and Byron Finnefrock. Mrs. Zelphia Seward and Miss Alvina Zastrow of the faculty made the presentation of the class for their promotion, these ladies having been the instruct ors of the class through their eighth grade. The certificates of promotion were given by Dr. O. C. Hudson, the president of the board of education, to the students of the class. 4f M I 1 WW Rev. Tuchek Honored on Anniversary Rosary Hall was filled to ca pacity last Monday evening with members of the parish who met to observe the tenth annivers ary of their pastor's ordination to the Priesthood. In a beauti fully arranged floral setting a program marking the sixth year of Father Tuchek's stay at Holy Rosary was presented. C. C. Girardot was master of ceremonies. The program in cluded vocal selections by Rita Van Ackeren. Donald Clifford and the Chanters: Ramon Kou bek, Donald Clifford, Daniel Ro han and Clifford Girardot. Mrs. Vincent Pilny and Kathleen Feldhousen were accompanists for vocal selections. Don Cotner gave a saxophone solo and Dan Rohan a trumpet selection. John V. Svoboda gave a brief history of Holy Rosary, stress ing the accomplishments of the past six years. Joe Knoflicek spoke about the progress dur ing the present pastorate. At the conclusion of the speeches, Ed ward Gradoville presented a purse to Father Edward C. Tu chek from the members of the parish. Father Tuchek gave a brief re sponse telling it was a pleasure to spend oyer half of his priest hood with the people of Holy Rosary. Rt. Rev. Msgr. George Aguis, pastor of St. Johns Church, expressed his personal best wishes. Father John Kelley was also present. A beautifully decorated cake bearing a tenth anniversary in scription formed a center piece on the buffet, banked with spring flowers. Ice cream, cake and coffee were served. Mrs. Jo seph Wooster and Mrs. Hermie Svoboda presided. John Bissing was at the piano during the re ception. Mrs. Anna Slavicek had charge of the guest book. The hostess committee: Mary Worsham, Ethel Girardot. Fran ces Cotner. Rut h Krings, Grace Meisinger, Cammille Swoboda, Alice FLemming, Josephine Warga. Mrs. Oren Pollard attended the meeting of the Eastern Star Grand Chapter in Lincoln Wed nesday and Thursday, at the coliseum on the fair grounds. Mr. and Mrs. Pollard were dinner guests of Mr. Bert White Wednesday and Mrs. Pollard was an overnight guest Wednesday of her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Everett White. Mrs. Henry Thiele, Platts mouth; Mrs. Leo Switzer; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Pollard; Mrs. Clar ence Hansen and Mrs. John Mc Clurg were recent callers of Mrs. Robert Wunderlich and son, John Edward. Mr. and Mrs. J. Middleton, Kansas City, Mo., were house guests Friday night of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Stone. They came to attend funeral services of Tom Akins. Mr. and Mrs. Don Hansen, Lyons, were week end guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hansen. Mr. and Mrs. Hall Pollard call ed to visit his mother, Mrs. Ruth B. Pollard at the Alton St. John home Sunday morning and in the afternoon they called on Mrs. Pollard's mother, Mrs. Crede Harris of Union. Omar Nutzman, Bertrand, was an overnight guest of Mr. and Mrs. Will Ost, Saturday. Honoring Mrs. Carl Balfour on her birthday and also a Mother's day dinner was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vance Balfour. Guests were Omar Nutzman, Bertrand; Mr. and Mrs. Clark Balfour and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Redden, Uunion; Mr. and Mrs. Will Ost, Carl Balfour, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Kent Balfour and family." Since the railroad tracks were washed out the mail is brought in by truck once a day. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Gordon, Omaha, were guests Saturday and Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wunderlich. ' Baccalaureate services were held Sunday evening at the au ditorium. The program was as follows: Processional, "Gradua tion Grand March" played by Peggy Sand; Invocation by Rev. K. B. Small; Song. "A Little Prayer" by a sextette, Mrs. El mer Ross, Mrs. Lyman Ander son, Mrs. Ivan Hansen, Mrs. Ro bert Schlichtemeier, Mrs. Glen Thacker, and Mrs. Ned' Nutz man, accompanied by Mrs. Hal Hansen. The sermon was given by Mrs. T. V. Hubbell, pastor of fl&fwuvAa the Christian chuich of Weep ing Water. The title was "Press ing On," and Mrs. Hubbell gave a very interesting sermon based on Jhe class motto, "Tonight We Launch, Where Shall We An chor?" and on Faith. The reces sional. "America, My Home" was played by Peggy Sand. Class members include Joan Klme. president; Robert DietL vice president; Jean Stone, secretary; Holland Cooper, treasurer; Don na Embury, Earl Chaney, James Pollard and John O'Connor. Commencement will be at the auditorium Thursday evening with Dr. W. C. Meierhenry of the University of Nebraska, the guest speaker. Dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wunderlich were Miss Anne Wunderlich. Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wun derlich and son. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vogler entertained at dinner Sunday. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Urisch, Weeping Water, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Briden stine. C. Trotter called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chappell at Nebraska City and then drove to Auburn to see the flood area. Mrs. Laura FJeshman was a dinner guest Sunday of her daughter, Mrs. Randall Switzer and family. In the afternoon they drove to Dunbar and Syra cuse to view the flood damage. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Mayfield and family attended a family dinner at the home of his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Mayfield at Louisville, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Pollard and Alton St. John returned Monday evening from Seymour, Iowa, where they spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Merritt pollard, Jr. Mrs. Gertrude Tay lor accompanied them as far as Bedford, Iowa, where relatives of Sheridan, Mo., met her and she spent the week end with Mrs. Rebecca Taylor and other relatives. She returned with the Pollards Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Jorgenson and Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Pol lard attended commencement exercises at Union Wednesday evening.
