SOCIETT The knowledge will be small consolation if you p,ct stuck :n th'1 mud this spring, but Nebras ka has come a long way since pioneer times in the development of its public roads and highways. California, cr Utah, frequently had trouble wi'h Ne braska's mud the Nebraska le cf the long or.rnev almost always was un dertaken in early spring. The trails became so badly rutted that wapons simply could not pass and new roads had to b? marked out. (This, incHen'dy accounts in pan for th? fac that the Oregon Trail may br several miles wide in certain parts of th? state, notably south c astern Nebraska. In territorial times, roads were little better than trails; and v.ht.n the e.rov.nd thawed out in the soring they usually were im passable. Rural reads were r.y. the enly ones afflicted by the soring thaw. Vi'iage and city s'reets suffered in equal or greater proportion. An editorial in the Dako'a City Democrat. Pedestrians worked Them up into a still worse condi'ien with st ocas and gutta percha boots, until the upper surface for two feet deep, was of the primi tive nature of brick. Stilts and o.her pedal appendages, adror. jumping, and the aquati: knowledge cf sturgeons, were in much requisition.
