THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL PAGE FOUR Thursday, November 3, 1949 Educational eek Named By Governor The week of November 6 through 12 has been designated as American Education Week in a proclamation issued by Gover nor Val Peterson. "Making Democracy Work" is the theme for the 29th observ ance of American Education Week. The event is sponsored by the Nebraska State Educa tion Association, the United State Office of Education, and the National Congress of Par ents and Teachers. In his proclamation, Governor Peterson stated that the "value of community interest in its schools cannot be over-emphasized. Parents and teachers are partners in the most important project of helping pupils gain the necessary preparation for meeting life's problems success fully. Only through a mutual understanding of the problems faced by the parents and teach ers alike can this important goal be reached." President Truman in his mes sage to the National Educational Association stated that Ameri can Education Week "should be a time for examining our com munities and searching our hearts to see if we are being fair to our school children and to our teachers in the tools we give them for the building of tomor row's citizens." Each day of the week will give special emphasis to a particular phase of the educational pro gram of the schools. Nearly all schools throughout the state are planning special programs in observance of Amer ican Education Week and are encouraging members of the community to visit the schools during the week. saws nn VfJMTPF? $m HHiiii Has a vt. L. Gamer, just north of the New-Way lunch. It was found by the firemen when they arrived, that the house was filled with a dense smoke, the fire located in a large overstuffed couch where some one had evidently dropped a cigarette that had smouldered away, and caused the heavy smoke but little loss from the fire. There were several families living in the two story frame residence. DON'T BURN LEAVES Lincoln Leaves- don't need to be burned when the home own er is cleaning up his yard. If the leaves are destroyed the home owner is losing some valuable fertilizer and humus materia! for his vegetable and flower gardens. This is what University of Ne braska extension specialists say. They say it's little" trouble to es tablish a pile of leaves so that they may decompose into humus or leaf mold. Leaves and sim ilar lawn or garden trash will not rot more rapidly if the pile Is made up of alternate layers of leaves and rich soil or mixed with a nitrogen fertilizer.
