GEIER The Frosh at Nebraska This year the Nebraska sports picture seems to be in a brighter light than it has been in recent years. A look at the freshman rosters in the various sports shows that this year the athletic department has made an all-out effort to encourage big name high school athletes to come to the University. In talking to some of the freshman athletes who have donned the traditional red "beanie" of the Nebraska cam pus, I found that many of them at one time had planned to go to other schools. So I said, "What made you decide to en ter the University?" The answers added up to this -coaches at the University of Nebraska not only had shown an interest in these athletes but also offered to help them in various ways with their trek to NU. This year the coaching staffs went out of their way to go out into the state and to meet the boys who will make Nebraska's Big 7 championship teams in the future. Because these high school athletes were usually eager to go to their own uni versity, they needed only to be shown that the University was interested in them. This year the Huskers' grid mentor, Bill Glassford, traveled some 16,000 miles in search of material for his football team. And those miles paid off. When the Frosh took the field against the Varsity before the season opener with South Dakota, it was evident that Coach Glass ford and his efficient staff had the kind of material necessary for the tremendous building job they have undertaken. The same situation exists in other sports as well. But was it just interest shown that induced these men to choose NU as their call letters? Not exactly. Under provisions of the athletic department's grant-in-aid scholarship program, worthy athletes are given their tuition. No other monetary considera tions are made. Athletes are permitted, however, to sell Cokes, apples, ice cream, etc., at all university athletic evenis if they need extra money. And this is where the grant-in-aid scholarship funds come from. The profits from these sales are split two ways. The seller takes a share and the rest is put into the scholarship fund to help other boys.
