I THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Monday, February 7, 1949 PAGE FIVE Local Men at Mississippi Valley Meet Saturday evening T. H. Pol lock, chairman of the river navi gation committee of the Cham ber of Commerce and Clement Woster, former mayor and one of the enthusiastic boosters of the Missouri river improvement pro gran;, departed for St. Louis. The local men will attend the meeting of the Mississippi River Valley association that held their j Missus. There were over 700 delegates at the conven tion, and a great deal of interest shown in the proceedings of the meeting. The convention brought many of the leaders ir congress inter- of the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio rivers, their use in the de velopment of inland shipping for the large manufacturing plants, especially in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois, where there is a large amount each year sent by water to New Orleans. One of the big elements of the convention is that of seeking to retain the administration of the river improvement in the U. S. Army engineers that have had charge of the program since it was launched, rather than the handling of the matter from a Washington source. The mem bers of the river group believe that this will insure a greater efficiency in handling the work. Another of the highlights of the meeting is that of the reten tion of the barge lin?s on the rivers and this is particularly strong in the states that border the Ohio river from Pittsburgh to St. Louis and cities along the Illinois river to St. Loius. It has been a great opportuni ty for the local representatives to get a clear view of the plans for the future river developments and this information they will be able to present to the local civic bodies. Mr. Pollock and Mr. Woster are expected to be home on Tuesday.
