Walter Plybcn was a passen ger to Netawaka, Kansas, on j Wednesday. Raymond Vogt's Poland China hog sale on Saturday night, at the Bornemeier Truck yards, was well attended and highly successful. He plans an- other cne for next year Communitv Kensington met on Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Ola Hayes, with twenty seven ladies present. Mrs. Ellis Miller gave an interesting ac count of her trip to Oregon. Marlene Eidenmiller sang "An Evening Prayer" and her sister, Jcyceola, played the "Minuet." Articles were read by Mrs. Sutherland and Mrs. Mel Miller. The November meeting is to be with Mrs. Newlin. Mr. and Mrs. Don Hcllenbeck and family are now located in their new farm home. Mr. and Mrs. John Wood left j cn Wednesday for their new home in Santa Monica, Califor nia. Mrs. Ruby McMaster -came j from there and took them back in their car. It is regret that our citizens see them go. Grave side services were held Wednesday afternoon fcr Dr. A. W. Neihart, who was 87 years of age. He was an optician, who worked in Nebraska City, Elm- i wood and Wood River . While j here he also had a photograph and jewelry business'. After the death of his wife ten years ago, he went with his daughter, Mrs. Noma Bain and family, to Wood River and later to Grand Island. Rev. Johansen of that place conducted a funeral there Tuesday, and the short service here the next day. Mr. and Mrs. Marvey Maddox, their son, Donald and wife and daughter. Mrs. Dorothy Maddox, attended ! the service, coming from Kansas I City, j Attend Homecoming Ball at Nebraska One of the big events of the Homecoming at the University of Nebraska aside from the UCLA Nebraska football game was the Homecoming ball held at the Coliseum and attended by a very large number of the members of the student body and their ladies.- Among those attending from Piattsmouth were Misses Jean Lloyd and Mary Jo Rebal who were guests of William Howland and Jim Alkire. Begley FOR District Judge NON-POLITICAL BALLOT Graduate University Overseas Veteran World War II. Mrs. Berlette Attends State Club Meeting The Annual Convention of the Federation of Garden Clubs of Nebraska was held at Scottsbluff on October 6th and 7th. The highlights of this meeting were many; chief among them be ing talks by noted flower author ities. Wayne C. Whitney, Exten sion Horticulturist from the Col lege of Agriculture at Lincoln showed colored flower slides and gave an educational talk on the various types of flowers. Glen Vichmayer, horticulturist from j the State Experimental Station I at North Platte talked on the j new "mums" that have been ori- ginated there. He also discussed the disease resistant strawberries ! and the fact that an effort was j being made to develop a variety t of the berries that would stand the hot dry summers. He also spoke on Chinese asters. Several , hundred of the Nanking cherry i bushes were offered to the garden ! clubs of the state with the stipu . lation that accurate reports on i their progress be forwarded to , the experimental station. These cherries are very practical being good for shrubbery as well as providing fruit. However, present experiments showed they did not do well in the eastern half of the state. Mrs. F. S. Mattocks of Boulder, Colorado, who is region al director for the Rocky Moun tain district was heard at one of the sessions. She told of her ex periences in building gardens and pointed out the relationship be tween the beauties of nature and peace, both mental and political. Mrs. William E. Parkinson, re- tiring president. gave her fare- well address. In recognition of her untiring devotion to the gard en clubs it was announced that one of the "mums" at the North Platte experimental station would bear her name Pearle Parkin son. It was also announced that ef forts would be made to legalize the Blue Star Memorial Highway through Nebraska. We do not have such a highway in Nebras ka now, however twenty states in the nation have so legalized the Blue Star Memorial High way, so named in commemor ation of World War II boys. A silver trophy was awarded to the Omaha Botnay Club as being the club that had the most mileage points in attendance at the convention. This troDhy is known as the Pearle Parkinson trophy. Mrs. Ed Berlett fo this city was in attendance and represented the Piattsmouth Garden club at the convention. Local Party Visits Friends at Creighton Mr. and Mrs. Bcb White and son. Bud and Betty Uhlik, spent the week end at Creighton, Ne braska, pheasant hunting, re turning with the required limit. They were guests at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Berglund and family and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Sebade. Mrs. Berglund was formerly Marie Speck of this city and Mrs. Sebade was formerly Eidelle Speck of this city. They all had a wonderful time as the Specks and Whites are old friends. Sunnyside Farm Bureau Meeting The Sunnyside Farm Bureau met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Meisinger on Thursday evening, October 21st. The busi ness meeting was presided over by Edgar Meisinger. All joined in discussion of the various mat ters to come before the meeting. Colored slides were shown by Ray Able. Cards and visiting finished out the remainder of the evening. At an appropriate hour delicious refreshments were served. The next meeting will be at the hoie of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Able on Thursday, November 4th. In the party were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cotner, John Glaze and son, John Jr., and Bill Arm strong. They will be guests of Howard and Walter Cotner at Red Cloud and are anticipating a fine hunt, as the birds are re ported as plentiful in that sec tion. They are also planning to visit at Holdrege while in that part cf the west. Attend Lincoln Lodge Meeting Friday evening Frank A. Cloidt and William Baird were in Lincoln where they attended to seme matters of business for a few hours. They also attended the meeting of Lancaster Lodge No. 19 of the A. F. & A.
