Raikes. 79. for many years a resident of Ashland and vicinity, died suddenly Tuesday, April 13. at her home in Gar dena, California. She and Mr. Raikes had visit ed the rclf-tives and old friends in the Ashland community the i past winter returning to Califor- r.ia in January. Mrs. Raikes had been ill with a heart condition and her son, Raph flew out two weeks ago to visit the mother. She appeared to be better and he returned by plane, arriving home about the time of her death. She is survived by her hus band. L. C. Raikes, and two s,ons. Experiments have been carried on by the British railways in constructing locomotives based , on jet-propulsion principles, I which will greatly facilitate rail road traveL VFW District Meeting Sunday The district convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was held Sunday at Tecumseh w ith a Ir.vge attendance from the south cast section of the state. The Plattsmouth Vets and members of the Auxiliarv were there in a large group having a bus chartered and several pri vate cars carrying the members. In the officers elected, Walter Sikora, commander of the Platts mouth post was named as the chaplain. Other officers named were: William Price, Pawnee City, commander; Dwig-ht Griffith. Au burn, senior vice-commander; George Robinson, Tecumseh, junior vice-commander; Dr. Miner, Falls City, surgeon; Frank Loch, Pawnee City, Quartermas ter, adjutant. The members enjoyed a fine dinner prepared by the Tecumseh Auxiliary that was followed by the dance. Reward for Stolen Calf is offered A few days old calf was stolen during the evening of April 12 from the Ellis Mickel farm west of Alvo. Mr. Mickel told the sheriff that he would pay fiftv dollars giving information lead ing to the arrest and conviction of the guilty parties. Mickel stated that the calf wasn't worth very much but it was iust the principal of the theft. The calf was red with white face and was very small. The calf was possibly sold to someone between Alvo and Louisville on the evening of April 12. Mrs. Warga Has Operation Saturday The many friends of Mrs. J. F. Warga will be pleased to learn that she is now responding in fine shape after her operation Saturday at the Immanuel hos pital at Omaha. Mr. Warga wa at Omaha Sat urday and Sunday to be with the wife and states that she is progressing as well as possible.
