Plattsmouth - Johnson Louisville - Nebr. City I ,. I State -- The Proof of a Christian Scripture: I John 4:15-21; BY WILLIAM E. GILROY. D.D. TF7HAT does it mean to be a " Christian? It is not enough to live in a "Christian" land, and be a Christian in the sense of not being a pagan. It is not enough to be a member or a communicant in a Christian church. It is not enough to make a profession, or to wear a Christian label. The New Testament writers are all agreed that to be a Christian is more than that, and, though they may express it in different ways, they are all agreed about what are the marks, tests or proofs of being a Christian. These are all comprised in be ing Christlike in the outward and open confession of "faith, as Jesus always expressed His faith, and in the inward life of ' love and grace, following the example of the Master and obeying His com mandments. John puts all the emphasis upon love; and that is where Paul puts it too, for he says in his famous eulogy of love, in I Corinthians 13, that it is useless to have gifts, a: 1 understanding of mysteries, and even faith and miracle-working power, if one has not love. It is the greatest of all things, and the one thing that abides when everything else fails. James and Peter are agreed about this. James says that love, if it is real and vital, will mani fest itself in practical living. Peter defines love, and the Christian life, as 'partaking of the divine special service of dedication of ' communion Table and Cross. 6:30 p. m. Youth Fellowship in the Memorial Room. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SOCIETY Sixth Street and Second Ave. Sunday services at 11:00 a. m. "God The Only Cause and Creator" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon which will be read in Christian Science Churches throughout the world on Sunday, December 7, 1947. The Golden Text is: Every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God" (Hebrews 3:4). Other Bi ble citations include, "Thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created" (Rev. 4:11). The Lesson-Sermon also in cludes the following passage from the Christian Science text book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, "All substance, in telligence, wisdom, being, im mortality, cause, and eilect be long to God. These are His at tributes, the eternal manifesta tions of the infinte divine Prin ciple, Love" (p. 275). ST. LUKE'S EPISCOPAL Canon Geo. St. G. Note, too, how exactly that is the idea of John, for he says that "he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God; and God in him." Paul. too. in his prayer addressed to God in behalf of those whom he had won to the Christian way, used like words: "that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith." Yet, when one turns from these plain tests of the Christian to consider the millions of professing Christians, what a discrepancy one finds between the ideal and the actual! TN every church and sect there is a lack of the evidences of the character and works of Christian love. And, in every church and sect, there are the sincere souls, who truly seek to follow their Master in gracious living. In all communions they are found. Prot estant, Roman Catholic and Jew ish, and even in those of other religious professions, who are like the Gentiles, whom Paul com mended of old because they sin cerely and earnestly followed the best that they knew. It is these who are the true friends and followers of Jesus- some of them, the sheep that He; said were in other folds, but whom He none the less claimed as His OWJlj. 1 If we deplore the fact that there ' is not more love in the world, as j the evidence of true Christianity,1 let us be thankful that there is so much, that so many are Christ like in their character and deeds as well as in their profession, 9:00 a m.
