GILROY, D.D. rFHE toji'c of this lesson for young people and adults is Tht Suff.cie.it Christ"; and that pra?p accurately characterizes both the letter and spirit of the Epistle to the Hebrews. The writer of the Epistle has a deep sense of the spiritual heri tage of Israel. "God," he writes, "at sundry times and in divers mannert spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets"; and in the 11th chapter he records the story of the men and women of Jaith In a way that only a lover ct Israel end of Israel's religion could have done. He is convinced of God's promise, and of His cove nant with His people. But his faith and outlook as an earnest Israelite is dominated by the supreme conviction that God, vbo spoke formerly through the prophu, has spoken "in these last days' through His Son, Jesus Christ, "the brightness of His iory." and "the express image of Hi person." Holding, thus strongly, a belief In the divinity of Jesus, what is remarkable about his Epistle is the clarity end insistency with v?hlch ha presents end expounds the fact of Christ's humanity. There is no Inconsistency in this, for the doctrine of the Incarnation Implies both divinity and human ity. It Is the doctrine set forth lr. the opening of the Gospel of John, of the word made flesh, and dwelling among men (John 1:14). I With all the greatness of the past religion of Israel, it is the Titer's contention that there was something Incomplete, and a promise unfulfilled. Saints and song last Sunday evening. Le- promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made i perfect" (Hebrews 11:39-40). , any certainty, to whom the Epistle Though it is not known, with any certainty, to whom the Epistle was addressed, it seems evident that it was written to Jewish Christians, subject to the sane sort of persecution that Saul had car ried on against the Christians be fore he became Paul, the convert To the charge that they were un true to the religion of their la triers, the writer asserts the reali- P R. Stevens bringing the rr.es ties of the new covenant, and the srge. nature and mission of Christ as the minister of better things. i '"THE key passage, of which all the rest might be regarded as exposition, is in the second chap ter, and especially in 2:17. Though greater than angels, the Son of God made himself lower than the angels, taking upon Himself hu man nature, and being made ie unto His brethren that He might be a merciful and faithful rugn priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people." But what of priestliness and sacrifice in the Jewish religion? The writer's answer is that Jesus as He has offered Himself a sac- rifice, once for all An Insistent question, I think, concerns how much of religious faith and prac tice of today is in the realm of un fulfilled promise, awaiting the su preme experience of Christ Him self as "the Minister of better things."
