While Elwood Miller was in the southwest part of town Saturday, his tractor caught fire, following an explosion. Sunday morning there was a thumping of the city water pipes, while they were being drained of the muddy water and -being refill ed with clear water, the result of an alum treatment in the east reservoir lake. It took quite a bit of looking to make us believe that clear water was coming out of those pipes after what we had seen the week before. Rasmus Lauritzen, city water commis sioner had been using alum in small quantities to clear water, so he began experimenting with larger quantities, until he was convinced that he had the solu tion to his problem of getting clear water for our town, so he used 1700 pounds in the east lake, causing the mud to settle, imme diately. To counteract the acid, he has been using lime. Carl Rec tor took a boat and carried large amounts of the alum out to the center of the lake and scooped it overboard, a little at a time, and the results came very fast, after which the filthy water wa' drained out of the pipes and the reservoir was filled with clear water.
