PAYABLE " STRICTLY IN ADVANCE Old Landmark Gone One of the oldest landmarks in the business section of the city passed out of existence Monday, when the well located on North 5th street, was concreted up and the pump that stood there for many years was removed by the city. The well stood in its accustom ed place for as many years as pro bably the oldest resident can recall, has served the community well. Here in the shade and enjoying the ample water supply pioneers have settled many of the village problems, the old moss covered bucket with the clear sparkling water available at any time to ease the thirst of the passerby. Many of the residents of the vi cinity of the well in early days used the well for the purpose of supply ing water for their homes and for wash day. Some years ago in the march of time and the fear of microbes, the old well platform was removed and replaced by the hand pump and this served for years to supply the thirsty, the old cup hanging nearby on the pump, serving all and as far as known there was no epidemic caused by the water, Here for Funeral Relatives here for the funeral ser vices of William Smith this after noon were Chester Smith of Santa Monica, California, William Smith of Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Jones of Los Angeles, and William Hender son of Lexington, Missouri. Set School Age At the regular August meeting" of the board of education, it was decid ed that any child who will have at tained the age of five years on or before the first day of January will be eligible to enroll in the kinder garten this year. The people with whom I talk feel that it would be worth a great deal more than that to have the people's welfare safeguarded by a sympathetic member of congress. The unsatisfactory peace after the last war has cost us a million time more than that in suffering and in lives. Senator Lodge was a menace in Woodrow Wilson's congress and the present congressman is a hindrance in this one that the people are de termined to remove." In countries where people are too closely controlled by government there are peasants . . . men and women without much hope of anything for themselves or their chil dren but continuing peasantry . . where strict government control has stilled all initiative and ambition. In America there is no peasant class, because we - have held open the door of opportunity to all. .The spirit that has made America great is the driving force of free, private enterprise . . . and there is no substitute. i , f - , l U WANT ADS - ' s WANTED "' ANYONE OWNING an undivided in terest in an estate located in Ne braska and wants cash, Write Henry B.
