"Some people evidently do not know what high grade voters we have here," Mrs. Gillespie stated. "I am sure the voters of this district will do their own thinking. Their hearts and their consciences will guide them as they have guided our citizens through the ages. Voters will perform their sacred duty and vote for those candidates they feel will help best in bringing victory, peace, employment and security for the people of our nation. They will decide for themselves if they want to displace a freshman arch critic of the administration for someone who will work constructive ly for the betterment of the people of the district. The only "outside interests" the people will have will be the interests of our men and women fighting the war. The effect of that interest may well strike into any obstructionists or their camp followers." (UP) The fighting in western France has become a vast battle of annihilation that promises a victory over the Ger mans greater than any previously inflicted upon the Wehrmacht in western Europe, British staff offi cers said today. Allied forces have created two great pockets; the Germans escape from one only to find themselves in another. Prisoners are pouring in from both the inner and outer pockets admit ting complete defeat. . "Those still fighting are mad men," is a typical prisoners state ment. Another says: "They have not the slightest hope and they know it is futile to fight any longer." British officers said that although a considerable number of panzers have escaped from the inner trap. they face annihilation on their way to the Seine. Mr. and Mrg. J. W. Greetings at Orleans, France So Enthusiastic That Had to , Bout Out Snipers' Orleans, France, Aug. 18. (UP) American soldiers had two problems when they swept into Orleans today the French people and German snipers. While they strained to get at scat tered nazi rear guard, the dough boys had to push through crowds of cheering men and women trying to pile fresh fruit and bread into their hands. The sweating infantrymen, with rifles and bazookas, were plainly per plexed as they piled into Orleans, where Joan of Arc had her most her oic days. This became obvious when a mine exploded up the street and sent a shower of debris into the air. I duck ed into a doorway, but the GI at elbow couldn't. A pretty French girl had leaned from a window, and had her arms tenderly about his neck. Later, he told me: "Hell, Mister, I like both loving and fighting as well as any man. But they don't mix in the same bot tle. Anyway you can't do two things at once." The Germans did not offer organ ized resistance to the American push to Orleans from the La Mans area. Heavy tanks rumbled behind the foot troops and all entered the city without firing a shot. The Germans blew up a military warehouse, but the flames failed to keep the civilians from rushing in and grabbing armloads of bread and bottles of wine. The German soldiers rose from shattered ruins with upraised arms. They didn't appear to be too un happy to be out of the war. French men watched curiously, but there was no hatred in their faces. gathered at the home of Mrs. Lester Robertson and family last Sunday evening. Allied Press) Three Miles Inland on Road From Ste, Maxime and Plan la Tour, France, Aug. 18, (UP) French men, women and children stood in front of their houses along this road last night and this morning weeping, I laughing, throwing kisses and cheer ing the Liberators. I ' moved inland with the first French troops landing in southern France. All along the way the civil ians shouted happily: "The liberators. Long live France. Go get those boches. Things will be better now." French units mingled with Ameri cans and shared bottles of good red wine which the villagers passed up to the truckloads of soldiers. The first French civilian I saw was standing in front of a water front house which had been ruined by the pre-invasion naval barrage. He alternately embraced the French soldiers and thrust out a bottle of wine. Tropical Storm Reported Miami, Fla., Aug. 18.
