News' Special Journal Correpondenc School Presents Program An all school progran was pre sented Wednesday evening at the bchool auditorium to a large crowd of school patrons that was gieatly enjoyed by all that attended. Miss Nita Mullen, and her father, L. M. Mullen, have been ill with the flu the past week. Dick Elliott who has been having considerable trouble with asthma aas been feeling very badly again. Several children have been absent from school due to illness caused b severe colds nad flu. Christmas vacation for the school folks will commence Thursday after noon and continue to January when all will resume their school unties. The annual Christmas program that is presented by the Sunday School group was cancelled due to much illness iu the community. A committee had the program well un der way. Mr. and Mrs. Verle Linch of Sioux City, Iowa was called to Alvo last Tuesday because of the illness of Mr3. Linen's mother, Mrs. Ti icknell. Mrs. Butknell is much improved and her daughter expects to return to her home the first of the week. Verle I.inch went home on Thursday be cause of the cold weather they didn't like to leave their home. Mrs. Art Bird who has been ill is much improved. Mrs. Bird took suddenly ill and was to go to the hospital for care but due to a de cided change for the better it "as thought best not to taki her from her home. She has continued to im prove. Lloyd Schuelke who has been serving in the armed force3 for sev eral months has been awarded a medal 0:1 the -merit o excellent be havior. Lloyd is certainly to be con gratulated and there is no doubt but that he will receive honors and pro motions as a direct result of this fine characteristic. Mr. and Mrs. Clfyion Fairfield of Lincoln imd Mr. aad Mrs. Albeit Fairfield and son of Omaha spent Sunday at li home of Mr. and Mrs. Farl Fairfield where they celebrated Christmas. Mrs. Charles Ayres and daughter, Mary Lou, departed for Texas, Sun day evening where they went 10 visit Mrs. Ayres' married daughter, Max ine, for a few days. Miss Fisher, grandaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fairfield, returned to her home in Illinois, where she went to re-enter school. She has been at tending the Alvo school this semes ter. A former Alvo boy, Gerald Glau bitz, fire controlman 1c, who has been in the navy for several years and is a veteran of nine major bat tles, has been sent to Washington, D. C, for advanced training in fire control. Gerald was in Lincoln re cently, where he was visiting his wife and baby, and also his mother, Mrs. Soren Peterson, and family of Mead. Forest Hardnock, Junior Johnson and Orland Bennett returned to their respective camps last week, after visiting for two weks with their parents and friends of this com munity. Mr. Herman Brunkow. who was taken to the hospital Saturday of last week, was able to come home Friday of this week. His condiiion was much improved. O. W. Fischer, who was injured inwardly, Friday, when helping load some hogs, has been seriously ill at the hospital. Friends hope to hear that his condition is much im proved soon. Lyal Miller arrived in Alvo Tues day for a few days vacation from his work at a defense plant. This vacation made is possible i'or Lyal to spend Christmas with his wife and eon. Mrs. Kohlor has been confined to bed for several days with flu Mr. and Mrs. Ililhefner, former Alvo people who moved to Lincoln about 27 years ago, very recently celebrated their 67th wedding anni versary. These folks will be remem bered by the older people of the com munity. Friends extend congratula tions. Will Timblin has been confined to bed with pneumonia. Friends will be glad to know that his condi tion is much improved and that he will be able to sit up some very ?oon. Harry Crawl, who has returned for a furlough after seeing acfrm in Sicily, visited his sister, . Mrs. , Wil lard Timblin, and husband Avhile home. Mrs. Hilton Rogers, who has been visiting her parents and other rela tives, went to Omaha Sunday to leave for Ithode Island, where she will join her husband who has been recently moved to camp there. Mrs j Rogers is the daughter of Mr. end Mrs. Joe Vickers. Miss Grace Muenchau, a teacher in the Pawnee school, is home for the holidays. and also looking after some business matter,. , ,; Mrs. Emma Morton entertained as her guests on Christmas day, Edgar Morton and family of Nebraska City, Mrs. Edith Hathaway of Plattsmouth end Velma Lusk of Nebraska City. Mrs. Isadore Tucker, who is in charge of the store at Nehawka, has been suffering with the flu for the past week, but is now reported as some better. Mr. 'and Mrs. John M. Akins, who - operate the Nehawka cafe, closed their place of business on Saturday for the day. Their son, Hugh, has leen quite ill and they spent the day assisting in his care. - Robert Chriswisser of Lincoln, was a guest of his grandmother, Mrs. Oappie Chriswisser, over the Christ mas season. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Pollard, of Mead, were in Nehawka," for the Christmas season visiting with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Pollard, and the old friends. Colorado Legislature to Meet Denver, Dec." 30, (UP) A spec ial session of the Colorado legisla ture will be held late next month to consider amendment of the etate laws to "make certain" that service men from the state will have the opportunity to vote in the next elec tion. Gov. John C. Vivian said today. Vivian said he called the special session "to provide- every fighting man with the chance to cast his bal lot no matter how far from this country he might be serving." "We won't wait for the outcome of federal legislation on this mat ter,." Vivian said. .;, Legislators said they could amend the state's voting laws, which cur rently allow only 22 days for dis tribution and return of absentee bal lots, to permit servicemen to parti cipate in both the primary and regu lar November elections. Church Has Program At the Nehawka church was held a very fine Christmas program with the usual tree and treats for the children.
