Christmas Day Will Be Featured For Fighting Men Ashore or Afloat the Men Will Ob serve the Day Where Possible to Do So Washington, Dec. 21. (UP) Turkey, tunes, talks and religious services make up the Christmas day program prepared today for Ameri ca's fighting men ashore or afloat in all parts of the world. Wherever an American soldier can safely lay aside his gun to take up his knife and work, he's going to get a Christmas dinner featuring the traditional turkey, and the usual trimmings. And the naVy is seing to it that its men at sea re ceive the same. There'll be Christsmas trees, too. They may be palm trees in the South Pacific, but appropriate trim mings will provide the Yule touch. The American Red Cross is distri buting decoration kits, including gaily colored balls, tinsel and even a couple of sleigh bells. Three hours of special Christmas radio programs have been produced and transcribed in this country by j the armed forces radio service for the benefit of men overseas. They will feature entertainment stars and name bands, as well as personal greetings from Secretaries of War and Navy Henry L. Stimson and Frank Knox, and the top command ers of the various armed forces. President Roosevelt will broadcast directly to them from Hyde Park, N. Y., on Christmas Eve. The voices of fighting men over seas will be brought home by radio. There will be a broadcast of a mid night mass from some place behind the battle lines in Italy. A chorus of 200 American soldiers in the Holy Land will be another event. From an island in the south Pacific will come a special Christmas-tree decorating program. But, of course, the big events of the day will be opening of packages from home and the Christmas din ner, home-style, to be served at fes tive tables in bases and camps, to men in fox holes and dugouts, in submarines beneath the seas and on ships sailing the surface. The army alone has shipped 10, 000,000 pounds of frozen turkey overseas for Christmas. And the lat est figure available shows that more than 15,000,000 Christmas packages were sent overseas by relatives and friends of servicemen. 4 It's not all gift-getting. For ex ample, in England, an American air force squadron has been saving m ihewing gum and candy for some time to present as Yule gifts to British children. Portrait of Local Girl In the greetings of the Iowa-Nebraska Light & Power Co., for the Christmas season,- appearing in the Lincoln State Journal, the photo graph of Miss Genevieve Whelan, formerly of this city, and now a bookkeeper in the office of the com pany, is shown among the employes.
