Recommendation of the committee I que said. it i was that the salary of the chief of! police be set at $150 per month, ' Ups Liquor Tax that of the assistant chiet at l5u per month. That the two take care of the police work, the chief to be on duty from 10 a. m. to 10 p. m., the assistant chief from 8 a. m. to 8 p. m., or a ten hour shift. Communications were read from the Business Men's Ad club and the Chamber of Commerce opposing the dropping of the third member of the police force as creating a bad condi tion and not providing an adequate protection for the busiess section of the city. Chairman Seivers of the police committee stated that the arrange ment was in the nature of1 a stop gap until other means could .be pro vided to give the men an adequate wage. The committee had desired to have the three men retained but it was hard to even secure two efficient men and increasing the pay developed the question of funds. If there was anyone that could find police timber f at the rate of pay allowed the com- cittee would be pleased to have them placed on duty. ; The recommendation of the com- . mittee was then adopted with Nelson, Puis, Schutz and Conis voting no. The resignation of Noah Parker as chief of police was presented to be effective at 6 p. m. on bunday and the resignation accepted by the council. The following bills were ordered paid by the council: Washington, Oct. 26. (UP) The House Ways and - Means committee today aprbved an Increase from $6.00 to ?10.00 a gallon on federal excise tax on liquor. It rejected all pro posals for increased levies on tobacco and gasoline.- ,-'v ; The liquor tax increase, which had been proposed by the treasury would increase the federal levy; from $1 .f.Q to $2.50 per quart oI 100-pIus spirits. The committee also approved in creases in beer and wine taxes. It estimated that these and the higher liquor taxes would bring in-$557,-000,000 additional revenue a year. General Fund Lincoln T &.
