Meat Shortage May Be Relieved By Marketing Relief Seen for the Live Stock ietders in the Increasing of the Teed for Stock Washington, July 15 (UP)The moat shortage soon may be relieved by a sharp upturn in livestock mar keting. War Food Administration officials said today. They based the prediction on the acute shortage of corn and other grains on the market, dry south western ranges that may force ear ly shipment of cattle from that area, and the abnormally large number of hogs and cattle on farms. So strong is the conviction of' some ofifcials that a rush of live stock to markets will develop within a few weeks that they are again studying allotment plans to pre vent a swamping of slaughter facil ities. The plan, under which marketing permits would be issued to livestock producers to prevent a market glut, were developed last winter by sec retary of agricultural Claude It. Wickard to handle the record num bers of hogs and cattle expected to reach markets last spring. Food officials emphasized that a more severe meat shortage than at present may follow large-scale mar ketings that would reduce livestock numbers on farms. Storage facili ties are insufficient to hold large quantities of meat. The weather bureau said that while livestock generally continue in good condition there is '"devel oping a rather widespread need for rain to maintain growth of pas tures and ranges over much of the central and western portions of the country." In the southwestern grazing area, the bureau said, the range is spotted, with moisture badly needed in some sections. Texas ranges were said to be holding up well, with the stock good but marketing slow. The War meat board reported in Chicago that the movement of beef to market recently has inci eased and that for the first time in months the armed service requirements - are being met. Packers are required to set aside 45 per cent of certain grades of steers and heifer beef for th armed services. There is no indication yet that civilian meat ration allowances will be increased this year. In recent weeks, most civilians have been un able to obtain as much meat, par ticularly beef, as they are entitled touuder present ration allowances. Farmers have ' indicated they in tend to grow 127,000,000 hogs this year 21 per cent more than the 1912 record. But the war food ad ministration has warned that the feed supply is not sufficient to fat ten that number. A program to ad just corn and hog prices, making its less profitable for farmers to hold the torn for feeding to hogs, is before war food administrator Marvin Jones. According to latest : reports the plan calls for an increase in the corn ceiling from the present ?1.07'l. Patterson, p 5 1 a bushel, Chicago basis, to about $1.20 a bushel. It also includes hog and cattle marketing different - ials in prices to make it less pro- fitable for growers to feed to heavy weights. x County Court Notes Hearing on claims was held in j the Helen Timm Wendt estate' be fore Judge Duxbury this morning. Final hearing in the Burton B. Everett estate was also held by the court. The administratis of the estate is Mrs. Margaret Everett, wi-' dow. French Ships to U. S. Fort de France, Martinique, July 16,, UP- Henri Hoppenot. new High Commissioner for the French Antilles, said ;today ? that French '.varships and tankers tied up at 'Hollywood Sees Premier Of Tor Whom Bell Tolls' Notables Gather to Witness the Dramatic Story of the Spanish Civil War New York, July 16, (UP) The movie version of "For Whom the Beli Tolls," the novel with the Spanish revolution setting, was received to day as one of the pictures of the year, except that it was too long. For two hours and 50 minutes, a crowd of 2,000 notables watched the So.Ooo.l'uO technicolor film unfurl the world premier of a story that covered only four days of war in the high Sierras of Spain. Hollywood tossed aside its tradi tions and followed closely Ernest Hemingway's novel, including con troversial Spanish politics and the sleeping bag episode, leaving out only the un.nc-utiouabie phrases and thj more intimate scones. Gary Cooper aptly plays the lead ing role of Robert Joraan, an American soldier of fortune who dies in the long-awaited end of the picture, defending the retreat of "Hos Woman," Marie (Ingrid Berg man). The premier, of which all proceeds went lo the national war fund, brought a host of screen and public notables including army and navy officials, Dorothy Lamour, Mary Martin, Sen. Claude Pepper, Wendell Willkie and Banker Winthrop Aid rich. Although the Paramount produc ers termed the picture essentially a "love picture," politics were express ed plainly in Itobt Jordan's explana tion of the Spanish Civil war. Talk ing to his republican followers he said: "Germany and Italy are on one side. Russia on the other and the Spanish people caught somewhere in between." The fascists and the communists, he said, were using Spain as a prov ing ground. Gen. Francisco Franco, fascist bead of the Spanish govern ment, was not mentioned in the film.
