Important 4-H Bates to Remember 4-H'ers will be pretty busy lroui now on busier than ever before making their contribution to great er food production for war needs. Remember tue saying "All work and no play makes Jack a duil boy," so, for diversion three county wide activities have been planned. First is demonstration and judging prac tice day scheduled for July 20th at "Weeping Water. 4-11 Club Camp tlates July 25-2$ should be lat enough to have the canning and harvest work out of the way. Then the thirdis county fair which comes the third week in August. Check these dales 011 your calendar and watch for more detailed information which will appear in this column from time to time. . Select Cockerels Now The quality or market poultry can be improved by early selection of breeding males. Before any cocker els are eaten or. marketed next year's breeding males should be selected and marked, is a suggestion coming from J. II. Claybaugh, Extension Poultryuian. Select full feathered, vigorous, well fleshed breast and thighs, well developed comb, sturdy yellow shanks and larger than aver age sized birds and ones free from defects. - Claybaugh says fast growing birds require less feed to produce a pound of gain. "J Can Peas in Pints" . .XlZ Victory gardeners in Cass' County are now reaping their harvest of vegetables and many of them are busy picking and caring for an abundant pea crop. Because of the starch content and the possible s closeness of the pack, the Agricultural College reconi-j mends canning peas oiiiy in pints. Also when filling the jars, a head space of one inch shuuld be left, This will prevent a tight pack and allow the heat to penetrate readily into he jar. The home economists say that tender peas should be used and they should be prepared as for table use. When pre-cooking the peas, boiling water should be poured over them and the lid of the kettle should be slightly ajar until the air is out of the kettle. Then, the peas should be covered tightly for the remainder oi the pre-cooking time. The peas are ;,vnimered 5 minutes, packed hot into jars, covered with water to within one inch of the top of the jar. One-half teaspoon of salt should be added per pint and the peas processed 4 5 minutes at 10 pounds pressure or 180 minutes in the water bath. If the altitude is over 2,000 feet,' processing should be at 11 .pounds pressure and for each additional -2,000 feet, one pound of pressure should bo added. Complete suggestions for canning peas and other vegetables are found In CC 55, free copies of v. hich can be secured from the Farm Bureau Office at Weeping Water. Gasoline Tax Refund Forms for use in obtaining a per mit to obtain a refund of (Jasoiine Tax and claim vouchers .for use by farmers who already ; have 'a permit are available at the County Clerk's office at Plattsmouth or the County Extension Office at Weeping Water. Farmers who iiso large quantities of gasoline for non-highway use find it pays to get the refund winch, is handled by the Divison of Motor Fuels at the State Capitol in ;Llc coln. Smith, president of the Illinois Agri cultural Association urges the na tion's farmers to unite in opposi tion to the government's program to roll-back food prices through the use of subsidies. Smith addressing the Mid-west Farm Board Conference, termed the subsidy program "an attempt to ap propiiate your money and my money to roll-back prices of food." The farmers, he said, already pay an un just proportion of the cost of the government. "1 regard this fight as the last straw in determining whether the nation is to have cheap food and high wages or whether all elements of society will bear fairly and equal ly the cost and burden of the war," he said. In spl:e oi damage i'l'uiii chinch bugis P-F-L cooperators found the past two years that sudan t:rass produced more pasture per acre than any other crop. This year the chinch bugs will probably do no serious damage in Cass County ex cept a few isolated areas. Replant Victory Garden With most V ictory gardeners hav ing their first crop out of their gar dens. County Extension Agents this week urged them to replant crops for home food production. In this way more food will be available for later preservation. The weather thus far Urn year has favored such crops as spinach, peas, lettuce, as soon as these crops are removed, a little raking will prepare the soil to receive a second crop such as carrots, beans, sweet coin or kohlrabi. Cv.c'.mibers could also be planted. Short-seasoned tomato varieties might also planted now. The main thing ia to get the great- jest possible amount of home food prodtictin from the Victory garden area. ; Conducting Combined Survey A survey to accurately determine the number of combines, their tvpes i ,and linage is now being undertaken in Cass County.. The result ng . in formation will be used to help solve 'the harvest labor problem. . i All combine owners in the county have been queried through the mails. By getting information on combines available for the custom harvesting this year it is hoped that the har vesting will ba helped by directing The survey follows up preliminary arrangements made between Kansas those owning combines, and willing to do custom work, to various parts of the; county. and Nebraska whereby a large num ber of combines from -Kansas have been lined up to come Into Nebraska in exchacge for any nelp which this state may give Kansas wheat farm ers.
