V 51 Inreased Interest in Livestock Production. With corn pieiung fairly well completed many Cass County farm ers are turning their attention to increased livestock, production. A letter mailed to all farmers the past wee trom this office calling attention to the government's re quest for greater livestock produc tion and giving individuals an op portunity to list brood sows, ees and dairy cattle for sale or that tney wish to buy is receiving excel-, lent response, aiost oi me uius it turned to date show farmers plan to increase the number of sows, keep more ewes and milk a few more cows. Farmers having a surplus of this breeding stock will sell it to neighbors rather than send it to market. A iist of all stock for sale as well as that wanted will be prepared and mailed to those requesting it. Gas Rationing Indications are that iarmers will be able to get as much gasoline as is essential but no more than is actual ly necessary to carry out their pro gram of increased production of farm products. It now appears that gas rationing will result in few, if any, hardships as many farmers at first thought. It will, however, call for careful planning of all driving done. Farmers who feel that an error has been made in their application or find they need a bigger allot ment are asked to write, not drive, to the County Rationing Board at Plattsmouth. Mr. Glen Boedeker, Chairman, from Murray says driv ing to the office is unnecessary use of tires and gasoline that we are trying to conserve. Too, there are so many applications on file that the committee handling them has little time for individual confer ences and probably can't take care of all office callers promptly. In cases of emergency individuals ! should consult their filling station operator. Take Care of Washing Machine No more washing machines will be made during the war, and repair parts will be very difficult to ob tain, war production officials have stated. Therefore, it is especially important that the machines we now have be used and maintained properly, Home Demonstration Agent Jessie Baldwin states. These are her suggestions: 1. Know your washing machine. Study the manufacturer's directions to get the maximum service from your machine. Do not overload it and strain the motor or blow a fuse. 3. Keep the drains clear of lint. Keep the surfaces of the machine clean and dry when not in use. 4. Take special care of all rub ber parts, and make sure that no oil gets on such parts. Drain the hose. 5. Keep moving parts properly oiled. Keep bolts and screws tight. Support Hog Prices at $13.25 The Department of Agriculture has announced that the price of hogs will be supported at an aver age of $13.25 per hundred at Chi cago. This price applies to good and choice butcher hogs, weighing 240 to 270 pounds and is to continue until December 30, 1944. Circular on Vegetable Diseases "Vegetable Diseases in Nebraska" E.'C. 1801 published by the Nebras ka Agricultural Extension Service, is available at the- county extension office. The cirular was ' written by Extension Plant Pathologist J. E. Livingston, and contains much in formation that should be of value to anyone making plans this winter for next year's garden. The circular includes discussion of specified diseases found on cer tain vegetables and control meas ures such as sprays' and seed treat ments, and general control meaures that each vegetable grower should practise every year in order to get maximum production. Plow Gardens Gardeners are urged to watch for the first opportunity to get their gardens plowed, if plowing has not uireauy ueen done. Extension Horticulturist Ernest Hoppert reminds that fall plowed ground is quickly and easily gotten reauy for early spring planting of peas, radishes, onions, spinach and potatoes. The freezing and thawing of winter breaks up the clods and fluffs the soil so with a little raking or harrowing it is ready for plant ing. Ususally there are a few days in late fall or during the winter when conditions are suitable for piowing. Rabbit Repellent Available Raboit repenent tree paint pre pared at the U. S. Fish and Wild life Service Laboratory, Pocatello, Idaho, will be available to Nebraska fai.mers through several cooperating aencies. according to word receiv- ed this week by Extension Agent Waldo from Extension Entomologist 0. S. Bare of the University of Ne braska College of Agriculture. The Nebraska Farm Bureau Non- Stock Association is making ar rangements to stock this repellent and distribute it through agencies such as the county non-stock co ops. Farmers who need the repel lent should contact their local co-op-or the state co-op at Lincoln. ' Bare states that this paint has proved to be very good protection for trees and shrubs. It comes in gallon containers, each of which is enough for treatment of a few hun dred to one thousand trees, depend ing on the size of the trees. If necessary arrangements can oe made, the repellent re-packaged in pint and quart cantainers for those who need only small quantities. In many places, prepared repel lents may not be available, and the entomologist and Extension Fores ter Earl G. Maxwell recommend the use of dry limesulphur mixed with water to the consistency of thin paint and applied with a brush. Ad dition of one pound of cheap bone glue to each gallon of the lime-sulphur paint increases its effective ness and lasting qualities. Extension Circular 1519 deals fully with control of cottontails and jatkrabbits. A copy can be ob tained without charge at the County Extension Office. Jessie H. Baldwin, Home Demonstration Agent Willard II. Waldo, County Agricultural Agent Stars In Game Robert Hayes, senior at Iowa State college at Ames, was one of the big reasons that the Cyclones downed their ancient rivals. Simpson college, the past week by a 42 to 30 margin Hayes scored eleven points for his team and in the second half of the contest scored nine of these points in a scoring rally that Simpson was unable to check. (UP) Senator i Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma today said the farmer was making no "un reasonable" demands from the gov ernment and unless the attitude of the administration changes, mem- j bers in high places "are definitely ! on their way out." Thomas speaking at the 24th An- ; nual Meeting of the American Farm I Board Federation said the farmers problems today were due to the j "failure of the administrative bran ch of the government to act under authority of the law already enact ed by the Congress. "Under present wartime condi tions no one can really say that the demands," he said. Thomas listed four things he believed should be demanded of the government by farmers, they were: 1. That agriculture be recogniz ed as a war industry. 2. That farm owners and farm labor be deferred for military servi ces. 3. That a new and definite par ity formula be developed so farmers "may have a square deal with both labor and industry." 4. That farm prices be permitted to rise to full parity "and even high er if necessary to secure sufficient production to supply our war needs." Bataan Hero Prisoner ,..mU8luu,. (UP) Because kettle boiled over acciuencaiiy, Bauer and Black Dressing Manufac turing Company announced today the nation has a new substitute for sponge hubber that can be produc ed from waste farm products and used in tanks, airplanes and other war equipment. Two chemists in search of a sub stitute for rubber as an adhesive tape, combined a resin w ith an acid and intended to vulcanize it in a kettle with other chemicals. The contents foamed up out of control. They succeeded in controlling the foam and the new rubber substitute was the result, the company dis closed. The new sponge rubber substi tute, as yet unnamed, can be used to line tanks, pad airplane cock pits, pad helmets, fill seat cushions and make de-icers for airplane wings and matresses for hospitals. After the war the product will be used for general civilian production replacing natural sponge ruu'oer. Opposes Silver Sale Washington, Dec. 8. (UP) Sena tor Pat McCarran of Nevada today continued a determined attempt to prevent Senate consideration of legislation to permit sale of Treasury-owned silver for war use at fifty cents an ounce. McCarran has proposed a substi tute for the original silver bill which would permit treasury silver to be sold at 71.11 cents an ounce. The standard price of non-monetary silver is $1.29, an ounce. Speaking in a low voice, almost inaudible in the galleries, McCarran said he was prepared to "talk for a long time to keep the bill from coming up in this session."
