Tax Talks to School Classes The students of the history class of Vernon Waterman and the cur rent events class of Paul Iverson, bad a very enjoyable treat afforded them this morning. Mess Sergeant Louis Kief, home from Fort Leon ard Wood, Mo., was visiting the school of which he is a graduate and was asked to give a short talk to the classes. Sergeant Kief gave a most enter taining account of the army camps, the work in the training periods, recreation and the preparing and supplying of food, in which depart ment he haj served since his induc tion into theanny. The instructors and class rub bers are very grateful to Sergeant Kief for hie very entertaining re marks. School Board Accepts Government Grant The board of education at their meeting Tuesday voted the accept ance of the government grant of $49,000 for additional classrooms and needed improvements at the hign school building. By Journal Field Representative William Doty, who spent the win-! ter in Weeping Water, because of j ill health, returned to his home here ! Friday. A. W. Carr and family are mov ing to Avoca the first of April. He has leased his filling station on Highway 75 to the Stonecifer Oil company of Nebraska City. Elmer Miller was in town a short time Saturday afternoon to see his father, Ed Miller. Unfortunately Ed was out of town and missed seeing Elmer, who was leaving that day for induction into the army. Mrs. Velma Brown is the new as sistant to Postmaster Karnopp, hav ing been selected to replace Miss Lois Fitzpatrick, who is now in California. The school operetta, which was postponed because of the inclement weather, was presented Monday night in the Banning hall. Miss Guest is to be commended on her ability to sponsor and produce so pleasing an entertainment. Panning and wife were visiting in Lincoln over Saturday and Sunday at the home of their son, Hollis Banning and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Carlet Daniels and two daughters and Ellis Daniels, all of Mateo, Calif., arrived Friday for a visit with the C. F. Harris family and other " relatives. Mrs. Harris is an aunt of the Daniels. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Becker and Mary Ann were Omaha visitors on Monday. Elmer Pike, who lives throe mile; east of Union, was painfully injured Sunday afternoon while attempting to blast logs with a mixture of potash and sugar. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dukes, Irene and Patty and Mrs. P. t. Dukes, all of Council Bluffs, were Sunday visitors at the Martha Pickering home. Becker and Roy Applegate took a load of cord wood to Omaha Monday. On Saturday they delivered a load to M. S. Briggs in Platls mouth. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Rich, who live east of Murray on the Eugene Nutzman farm, spent Sunday at the T. J. McQuin home. Aid Does Their Part The ladies of the Laptist Aid so ciety served a dinner recently at the church for the benefit of the Red Cross. A nice crowd responded to the tempting viands, which in variably avioriate themselves with these ladies and it may be pleasing to all to learn that due to the co operation cf the community the so ciety was able to present $20 to Union quota of the Red Cross war fund. Honor Mrs. Niday After IS years of faithful service as president of the Ladies Aid so ciety of the Union l aptist church. Mis. J. C. Niday has resigned in favor of Mrs. W. B. Banning.
