PIATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOURNAL MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1942. PAGE FOUR MAWLEY By Journal Field Representatire Mrs. A. Steinkamp was visiting for a number of days in Louisville at the homeof Mrs. P. Kahler and Mrs. Mary Schleifert. Both friends of many years standing. John Rohrdanz and wife were having their winter butchering done on last Wednesday, getting it out of the way for whatever work might be in the offing. Miss Lillian Tighe of Omaha, who was a visitor in Manley, guests of her sisters, Mesdames John C. Rauth and Walter Mookenhaupt, returned to her home at Omaha one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Steinkamp, who make their home at Wichita, Kansas, have been visiting in Man ley, guests at the home of the mother of Herbert, and with other relaives and friends. They also visited at Louisville and Flattsmouth. Messrs. Harold and Lawrence Kreeklow were over to Tlattsmouth on last Friday where they were looking after some business matters and were gettting license plates for their automobiles and some other special work. To Have Skin Grafted Johnnie Gruber, who was so ser iously burned some time since, has been getting along nicely and has leached that point when he is to submit to skin grafting. There are two places, one one his eye and the other on his neck that require the grafting of skin from other por tions of the body. Cass County Farmers Banquet The members of the Cass County Farm Bureau were gathered at the community building more than 400 strong, not all men either, for the women were well represented. A most pleasant time was had with a plen teous variety of good things to eat. A very nice program was had with music intersperced. as the banquet ers ate and conversed. This getting together of tlie people for an annual feed is a very fine gesture and is weil worth the pains and cost of the work. More of these gatherings would be line for everybody. Will Move to Cass County Mr. and Mrs. Fred Holt and fam ily who have been making their heme at Dannebrog. were recently visiting in this neighborhood, where they arranged to farm here. They rented the farm on which Milton Nelson has been located and have returned up-state where they will hold a sale to dispose of equipment they do not care to move, then re turn to take up the work here and become citizens of Cass county. Removed to Other Field John Rauth, a member of the air force of the United States, who has been located at Mitchell Field, lias been transferred to Maxwell Field at Montgomery, where he ex pects to bo located for a time. Mr. Rauth is the son of A. F. Rauth and wife and a grandson of his name sake. Attend Stamp and Bond Meet Postmaster Rudolf Bergman was a visitor at Weeping Water where he was accompanied by the Rev. Fr. Ilcnnesce, where they attended a meeting of postmasters and others who make up the force of those who sell stamps and bonds for the gov ernment. There were speakers from Plattsmouth and Omaha present to explain what those interested de sired to ask. Maher 1.00 TOTAL $ 40.50 Undergoes Serious Operation Kdward Sheehan who is employed at Falls City by the Missouri Pa- itie railway, has been suffering from repeated attacks or appendiictis and entered a hospital there last week where he underwent an operation for removal of the offending organ. The case was an aggruveted one and since the operation Mr. Sheehan has only been doing fair. His many friends both here and at Falls City are hoping that he may show bet ter improvement. Undergoes Appendectomy Mr. and Mrs. William Sheehan, Sr., were called to Falls City Thurs day on account of the critical illness of their son Edward. He under went an appendectomy on Wednes day evening and later peronitis set in which made his condition very grave. His mother remained in Falls City to be at his bedside. Getting Along Very Nicely Miss Bonnie Rhoden, who has been bothered by repeated attacks of appendicitis for some time, was taken to the hospital where she underwent an operation for relief of the ailment and rallied from the ordeal very nicely. The many friends are pleased with her improvement. Mr. and Mrs. Clen Thiessen and family spent Sunday with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Thiessen near Gretna. Lulu Mae Jackson was a Sunday visitor with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Munn. Sunday evening dinner guests at the F. J. Knecht home were Mrs. Sadie Shrader and son Gerald of Nehawka. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Dill and Vernon were evening callers. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fosberg were Sunday dinner guests at the T. V. Hansen home near Weeping Water, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hud son and family were also guests. The: dinner was given honoring Mr. Han sen on his birthday. Mrs. Wm. Blum accompanied ln?r sister Mrs. Carl Hartinan and fam ily to Fremont and Schuyler Satur day where they visited relatives. F. J. Knecht was a business visi tor in Lincoln Friday. Delores Glaubitz spent -Friday night and Sunday with Wanda Nunn. Mr. and Mrs. Lem McGinnis drove to Auburn where they were dinner guests with her daughter Mrs. Charles Bradley and family. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Nannen and chil dren were also guests. Ben Weaver called on his father, Fred Weaver, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Braun were Sunday dinner guests at the F. J. Knecht home. They drove their car back to their home in Esbon. Kans. Martin Blum called at the Wm. Blum home Wednesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Wunderlich of Omaha were Monday visitors at the F. J. Knecht home. Loran Vogel and Kenneth Livers called on Herbert Blum Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Campbell are not feeling so well. Mrs. Glen Thiessen and Mrs. Carnicle called on Mrs. Clyde Ilas well Tuesday afternoon. On Wed nesday Laura Vargas, Esther Kuhn and Mrs. Hoffmaester called. Mrs. Haswell is recovering nicely since returning from the hospital. Allen Blum has passed his exam inations and will leave about Feb. 16 for a camp in Arizona. Elmer Hoffmaester and Elizabeth Freeman were Sunday visitors with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hoffmaester. W. J. O'Brien has gone to Roches ter, Minn., for a general check-up. Little Annette Hartman is at the Wm. Blum home while her sister, Mary Jo., is very ill. Death of A. E. Towle Friends of A. E. Towle of Tucson. Arizona, a former South Bend resi dent, were sorry to hear of his sud den death at his home. He was ac cidentally shot by a small son during target practice. The family has the sympathy of the friends here. Benefit Card Party Raises $15.85 The Red Cross benefit car fid party sponsored by the Friendly Circle, held in the town hall on Wednesday night was enjoyed by all. Th e sum of $15.85 was turned over to the Red Cross. High score prizes in pinochle were given to Esther Kupke and Charles Fosberg. Second, Mrs. L. McGin nis and Clyde Haswell. Low score prizes: Christine Blum and Jerry Streight. Fred Weaver and Mrs. Homer Carnicle won high score prize in pitch. The children enjoyed Chinese checkers and other games. The $1 in defense stamps went to Wanda Nunn and the 00c de fense stamps to Doris Copsey. Lunch was served to all present. The town board gave the use of the hall free of charge, making $3 more for this worthy cause. South Bead Special Journal Corresponcnce WABASH By Journal Field Representative II. II. Gerbelling has been batch ing for a number of days as the good wife was visiting in Lincoln with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McCoy. Henry Obernaulte and wife were over to Lincoln on last Friday where they went "to visit with Edward Obernaulte who is receiving treat ment at the Bryan hospital. J. E. Golden and Ralph Richards were over to Syracuse on last Wed nesday afternoon where they were attending the community sale which is held there every Wednesday. Wayne Bornemeier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bornemeier, who has been with the Farm Credit Adminis tration, has been transferred to an office of the Farm Credit Administra tion in Lincoln. Frank Marshall, the elevator man. was shelling and loading the accum ulation of ear corn for shipment. This corn had been stored during the fall and early winter until there was a large amount of it to sheel and ship. Mrs. Myrtle Wood, who has made her home here for many years and is known and knows all who former ly lived here, enjoyed a very pleas ant visit with her sister, Mrs. J. W. Staten, of Lincoln. Mrs. Fred Borne meier. also of Lincoln, was here and was guest of Miss Myrtle Weed. She was accompanied by her two daughters. Roads Were Badly Drifted Many of the roads about Wabash which were drifted full of snow dur ing the blizzard are still unopened, and now the snow has melted and frozen again, thus making it almost impossible to do anything with them. The mail carried. Miss Myrtle Wood, has been having a very serious time making her mail route on account of the almost impassable roads in many places. Ladies' Kensington Meets The Ladies Kensington of Wabash met last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Keith Munford where they were taken from Wabsh by the accomodation car of the U. S. mail carrier. Miss Myrtle Wood, who having completed her task of serv ing Uncle Sam, drove a portion of the ladies to the meeting place, one mile east and a half mile south of Wabash. The ladies enioved the eet- together very nicely as they always j do. The object of the meetings is generally for the benefit of the com munity of Wabash. Taken to Bryan Memorial Edward Obenaule, who has been quite ill at his home in Wabash for a number of weeks, and while all was done for him by the people of Wabasn. he seemed to get woie rather than better. It was finally de cided to place him in an institution and he was taken to the Bryan Memorial hospital at Lincoln where he went through the clinic and is remaining while they determine a course of treatment. To Hold Sale Tuesday August Oehlerking, who expects to quit farming and make his home in Elmwood, is having a sale of his effects, consisting of farm equip ment of all kinds. Should one desire to engage in farming this is a good place to buy equipment. The farm where Mr. Oehlerking has been will be occupied by his son. Alvin Oeh lerking. Alvin has been farming the Rueter estate farm which will be farmed by Mr. Klemmer. Spend Week-End Here Mr. and Mrs. Fred Patzel of Liu coin and their two children were over the week-end visitors in Wabash, j guests of the parents of Mrs. Patzel J Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Stanley, where1 all enjoyd a very fine visit for both Saturday and Sunday. Enters Employment at Fort Crook Albert Bornemeier who for the past, year worked in a bomber plant at Baltomore, Md.. returned to the home here and will be employed in the bomber plant at Fort Crook. He will make his home on the farm al though he will i ct work at farming, for the service at the bomber plant will be sufficient a duty and the lime sufficiently long. To Make Home in the East William Sanders, who has been farming over on the stone road and who held a sale recently of his farm equipment, with the family, de parted for New Jersey where his brother, who makes his home in the east, has a farm which Mr. Sanders operate. He thinks he will like the east very well. AIvo News Special Journal Correspon Jenee Miss Margaret Jean Stroemer spent the week-end with her folks. Several are husking corn again since the weather has moderated. Rev. Hammel was in Alvo during the sale Monday, visiting with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Klyver called on Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Fifer Tues day evening. Mr. and Mrs. George Moomey of Elmwood spend Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cook. Miss Grace Muenchau spent the week-end with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ben MueiKltau. Mrs. Parsell, who is in the Bryan Memorial hospital is reported to be getting along as well as possible. Mrs. Rehmeier took Fred and Frank to Lincoln Tuesday evening. On Tuesday and Friday they go to the M. C. A. Mrs. Mabelle Winn and son and Charles Stout attended the farm sale at the Ralph Hopkins farm held the first of the week. Dick Bornemeier is taking exams and tests today (Friday) in an effort to get into the aviation division of the United States forces. Ralph Dreamer left Saturday for the army. Ralph was a farmer and would have gone sooner but he re mained to tend his crops. Rev. and Mrs. McClellan went to Waveily SunJay where Rev. Mc Clellan w.irf the visiting minister and delivered the morning sermon. Mr. and Mis. Simon Rehmeier drove to Weeping Water and Avoca Mon day. Mrs. Rehmeier called on rela tives and friends while Mr. Rhemeier was looking after some business. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cook and Mr. and Mis. H. L. Bornemeier drove to Weeping Water to attend the an nual farm meeting at the Weeping Water agricultural building Thurs day evening. Charles Ganz again injured his leg when playing basketball Tuesday evening at Eagle. Last autumn he broke the limb and playing again proved to be too strenuous and he strained it. Ho was taken to the doctor and all are happy that it was not serious as at first thought possible. Walter Collins and family has mov ed to near Springfield. They moved from Miss Margaret Greer's farm northwest of town. They had lived there 13 years. Mrs. Collins has lived in the AIvo vicinity most of her lifetime. The family will be greatly missed from the school and social circles. Among those who attended the Farm Bureau meeting and banquet at Weeping Water Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Ganz, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen. Mr. and Mrs. Or ris Cook, and Mr. and Mrs. Wendel Cook. Foster May was a guest speak er. He told of his trip to Guatemala which was very interesting. Visiting Minister Rev. and Mrs. Lind of Elmwood. were in Alvo for the morning ser vice Sunday. Rev. Lind was the visiting minister and delivered the morning sermon. They were present for Sunday school and enjoyed their visit here very much. Mrs. Lou Herman accompanied the couple to Alvo. Here from Hemmingford Mr. and Mrs. Wayne St wart z of Hemmingford and two small chil dren, have been here visiting. Mrs. Schwartz's mother, who lives at Murdock, has been very ill and they have been here to sec her. Hostess to Club Ladies Mrs. Lester Jensen was hostess to the Reading club Thursday after noon. Mrs. August Johnson. Mrs. Boyles and Mrs. Frank Cook gave most interesting lessons on heir looms The ladies enjoyed this great ly. Mrs. John Schlaphoff and Miss Kosin were among the guests pres ent. Mrs. Jensen served very de licious refreshments. There was special music by Mrs. Lee Coalman and Beverly Elliott. EIGHTH STREET PARKING The city police department is ask ing the co-operation of the residents along North 8th street to aid them in parking problems. The military authorities have requested the city to see that the street is made a one side parking. To make it easier for army trucks to reach the ride range and govern ment reservation north of this city, the motorists who park on Eighth street are asked to park on the west side on the pavement and on the dirt road on the east side of the street. This will give more oppor tunity for the passing of the trucks. Greenwood Special Journal Correspondence Mr. and Mrs. Everett Jardine of Lincoln spent Saturday night and Sunday at the Frank Hurlbut home. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welton spent last week-end with their son, George and family at Colon. Phillip Kriss of Lincoln has been hired by the school board for the English teacher in the high school. The Extension club met Wednes day afternoon at the home of Dor othy McKay. Mrs. Matilda Anderson of Wav eiiy visited her daughter, Mrs. Ray Rouse, Tuesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thompson moved to Lincoln on Sunday where they will' make their home. Mrs. Tom Maher. and daughters, and Miss Maxine Hurlbut visited Mr. and Mrs. John Brox at Lincoln last Sunday. Mrs. Dr. Wallace of Friend. Neb., visited her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kyles and sister. Mrs. Elton Keller Thursday afternoon. Miss Margaret Holka of Ceresco spent Wednesday afternoon with her parents. Miss Leona Hraban underwent an operation last Saturday at a Lincoln hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rouse attended the Sutton-Bliimstrom wedding at Waverly on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Elton Keller and family moved to Havelock Saturday where they will make their home. Mr. Keller is employed in the shop? there. Death of Mrs. Boucher Mis. Elizabeth Warren Boucher, S5. passed away at her home Mon day, January 20. at 4 a. m. She has lived in this community 56 years. She leaves to mourn her loss two daughters. Miss Alice Boucher and Mrs. Charlie Martin, and one son. Warren Boucher, all of Green wood; one granddaughter. Miss Eliz abeth Martin: three sisters and one brother in Iowa. Funeral services were held Wed nesday at 2:30 at the Christian church.
