Because the pressure for these nonessential expendituies in their aggregate, destroys any possibility of bringing about a sound, reason able national spending policy; and ; Because this emergency places upon every I American and every organization a moral f responsibility not only for defense today but for security alid stability tomorrow, I 3 pledge, in this emergency, to serve the interests of my country, by not asking of any public ofhcial any expenditure which can be deferred or which I do not truly believe to be now vitally essential either to defense or to my t own legitimate welfare or to that of my state K or community. - The "For Defense Today For Hope i Tomorrow" pledge shown here is being distributed to mil lions of citizens by the recently organized Citizens Emergency Com mittee on Nondefense Expenditures, Washington, D. C, in cooperation with taxpayer organizations in 20 states. Henry M. Wriston," Chairman of the Citizens Emergency Committee, ia explaining the objectives of the pledge campaign said, "Most Ameri cans who have really thought about our national problem today and that includes most members of Con gressadmit that we cannot pile the staggering costs of defease on top of continued nondefens, non essential spending of the last de cade without endangering our hope in the 'future. They admit non essential spending of government i 4- - 4 y 4f v days to take a checkup in his heal ing. Christmas Day at George Davis Christmas day and a very fine din ner was duly appreciated and cele brated at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Davis. There were there for the occasion Harold Kreeklow and family, Mrs. Kreeklow being daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. August Krecknow, Delbert Munn of Weeping Water and sister, Mrs. Ella Green who is housekeeper for her brother, Delbert Munn, who make their home in Weeping Wa ter. should be pared to the limit." But, Dr. Wriston pointed out that the very people who demand non- uetense economies are too often the ones who put pressifre on their legislators to push appropriations of local interest that are not vital at this time. The "For Defense Today For Hope Tomorrow" campaign, ac cording to Dr. Vriston. will af ford the American people the op portunity to be heard before it i3 too late. It will also give millions a chance to pledge their sup port to the President and the Congress of the United States in effecting vital economies in order to insure the future economic sta bility of the country and the invest ment of ideals, hope and freedom that every American has in that future.
