THURSDAY, NOV. 6, 1941. PLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY J0UB2IAI PAGE ITVE ;HinninnimtniM DEAR FOLKS By VAN Street of Romance Olvera Street, that little bit or Old Mexico iu downtown Los Angeles, conceivably might be a movie set built, used and forgotten by some film studio. For Olvera Street (which really is not a street, but an alley way open only to pedestrians) is a quaint and charming anachronism of California's early days, strangely out of place in today's defense hubbub. Visitors to the colorful Mexican bazaar and marketplace, even though their Spanish be limited to "Adois," cannot fail to be captivated by the colorful scene that Olvera way pro vides. Strolling musicians, dressed in typ ical Mexican dress, playing and sing ing Mexican airs; shop after shop displaying tamales, pinon nuts, tacos, decorative gourds, beadwork, serapes, enchiladas, pottery, silverwork and other Mexican wares; rapid sketch artists who draw remarkably accur ate likenesses; cellar and sidewalk cr.fes, where entertainers dance ex liting Mexican jarabes and other dances; the ebb and flow of the soft syllables of Spanish spoken all around; the cobbled paving; the old wishing well and ancient ox carts; and above all, the happy Mexican peo ple who smile, even though you have only come to look and not to buy. All these things and others blend charmingly to make Olvera Street a must for tourists and a treat that many Californians repeat again and again. When one leaves Olvera, one doesn't say goodbye, but "Hasta la NURSE'S AIDES In collabora tion with the Office of Civilian Defense the Red Cross is training 100,000 O volunteers as nurses aides. Joe Graves celebrated his birthday, also, on October 11, a family dinner being held in honor of the occasion, which was made more pleasant by the fact that his mother, Mrs. J. H. Graves, was present to help him ob serve his natal day. Prophetic Philm That movie script writers can sometimes foretell the future, Earl Carroll found out to his financial em barrassment, the other day. Gunmen forced employees of -Carroll's Holly wood Theater Restaurant to hand over box office receipts. Now if you saw the picture, "A Night at Earl Carroll's," you'll probably remember that the plot included scenes where Carroll employees were kidnaped by gangsters. In the movie, though, these baddies got their just punish ment, whereas as for as we know, the real robbers may even now be spending their ill-gotten gains some OTHER night club. in 'Bound About Neil and Emma Samek arrived from Nebraska Jast week, and will live at Santa Ana.
