July 23rd the Cass County Can ners I and the Happy Homemakers hold their joint achievement at the Nehawka Methodist church. Evelyn Wolp.li. leader of both clubs intro duced the officers of each club. The Cass County Canners then conducted their meeting. Virginia Pollard, president, presented a beautiful bou- jquet of gladioli to Miss Wolph from the Cass County Canners in appre ciation of her leadership. Virginia led the pledge of allegiance to the flag and the 4-H pledge. Imogene Tollard. program chairman, then took charge of the meeting. The ; program was as follows: Secretary's summary, Margie ltutli I'oiiarci; piano solo. Marian Waddell; poem, "America for Me," Helen Grant; songs by the club, "Dreaming" and "Follow the Glem." Virginia Pol lard told of the different things we studied this year. Kathleen .Falfour sang "The Pledge." Ann Thoren gave a poem and Marian Waddell led the club in some yells for Miss Worpli and the judges. Each mem ber answered roll call with a differ ent phase of our club work. Miss Baldwin spoke to the club and com plimented thejn on their exhibit. The presidents of both clubs pre sented gifts to Miss Baldwin, Miss Gill and Ruth Ann Sheldon for judg ing. There was an exhibit of 103 jars and S2 placings were made. Virginia Pollard and Janet Nutz nian, presidents, presided at the table. The members cf both clubs assisted them. Can 2443 Pints February 4, 1941 the Cass County Canners club was organized for the , sixth consecutive year, Several gins met with Miss Evelyn Wolph at the Nehawka school house and organized a second year canning club. The fol lowing officers were elected: Virginia Pollard, president; Imogene Pollard vice president; Margie Ruth Pollard, secretary; Eda Tyson, news reporter; Evelyn Wolph, leader; Virginia Pol lard, assistant leader. The other members were Kathleen Balfour, Marian Waddell, Helen Grant and Ann Thoren. On April 29th at the Nehawka library, Virginia Pollard, the presi dent conducted the election of four new officers. Marion Waddell was chosen yell leader. Ann Thoren game loader, Kathleen Balfour was unani mously elected song leader and Helen Grant was chosen citizenship chair man. The president appointed the vice president, Imoirrnp Pollard, roll call chairman. It was decided that the president should appoint some member to plan a program for each meeting. The members interested in attending Club Week or some club icamn n anneu to noiu a oaKe saie jMay 7th. It was decided that the j money earned by each individual jwould be hers toward any camp she wished to attend. The members dis cussed the canning of asparagus. It was suggested that one meeting be spent in chicken canning. Miss Wolph urged the girls to keep their records neat, up-to-date and where they could be easily found. The Cass County Canne- met May 2Sth with Kathleen Balfour. The i it six members present answered rou call by naming a piece of canning equipment. Ann Thoren reported on meat canning and equipment and Marion Waddell told of chicken can ning. Kathleen Balfour gave a dem onstration on the "Preparation of the Jar for Canning." The girls who attended the "Food for Defense" dem onstration at the Union church told the outstanding points about it. Eve lyn Waddell gave a piano solo and Helen Grant read the poem "My Treasure House." Kathleen Ealfour led the singing and Marian Waddell led the yells. June 11th the Cass County Can ners met with Eda Tyson. The seven members present named several vege tables and told the various methods of canning. The secretary read the constitution and the club approved and signed it. Miss Wolph conduct ed a most impressive installation ser vice. Each officer lighted her candle from a large candle representing the national, state and county organiz ation. Miss Wolph explained the duties and responsibilities of each office. She then presented a beauti ful petunia to each officer and an ivy plant to the president. The girJs then sang "Follow the Gleam." Each office will have a more significant meaning as a result of this install ation. The president led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Helen Grant, the citizenship chairman, read the article "We Are Proud." Eda Tyson explained the score card for meat and told the various points to consider in judging canned meat. Virginia Pollard reported on Eco nomical Buying. Eda Tyson and Imo gene Pollard demonstrated the 'Mak ing of Strawberry Preserves." It was reported that Ann Thoren received $3.33 and Marian Waddell received $1.70 from the two bake sales which they conducted. They will use this money to attend Camp Brewster in August. The pledge of allegiance to the flag led by the president opened the meet ing. The eight members present an swered roll call by giving a dinner menu which they had planned. A skit on safety, "Be Careful 1" was presented by Virginia Pollard and,at 1 o'clock a. m. of said day at Ann Thoren. Helen Grant read the poem, "The American Flag." Ruth Pollard gave a piano solo. Helen Grant reported on "Planning Meals for Health" and Margie Ruth Pol lard reported on "The Selection of Foods" and explained menu judging. Miss Wolph gave each member six pint jars which were sent to the club by the Hazel-Atlas Glass com pany. It was reported that 33 women attended the Food for Defense" demonstration that the Cass County Canners helped give June 13th. The thank-yon letter to the Hazel-Atlas Glass company was read by the secretary. A safety skit was given by Eda Tyson and Margie Ruth Pollard. Eat h member re ported on a portion of the revised material and Virginia Pollard sum marized all the reports. Ann Thoren demonstrated jelly making. Those hav ing perfect attendance are Virginia Pollard, Helen Grant and Ann Thor en. During the year the Cass County Canners canned 2443 pints of food. Ihis brings to a c!o:;e another suc cessful year for the Cass County Can nes. Much of this success is due to MU- Wolph.
