Every Thursday Special Journal Correspondence Mr. and Mrs. Edward Porter spent last Saturday evening and Sunday in Lincoln with relatives. Mrs. It. C. Wenzel entertained the Dorcas Society at her home on Wed nesday afternoon, June 4. Mrs. L. W. Piersol visited in Lincoln from Wednesday until Fri day of last week with relatives. Guy Jones attended the Nebraska Crain Dealers convention at Nortn riatte the first part of last week. Marian Wulf, who had his appen dix removed recently, was able to come home last Sunday afternoon. Mr3. A. II. Siekman was hostess to the Trinity Lutheran Aid Society at her home last Thursday after noon. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wall and Jan of West Point arrived in Eagle Tuesday evening and will visit Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wall. Mrs. Ira Stall and Maxlne were in Lincoln the latter part of last week at the home of Mrs. Stall's sister, Mrs. Stephen Taylor and Mr. Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hursh of Grand Lsland came Saturday evening and visited over Sunday with the fawner's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hursh. Miss Lois Jean Lytle spent a short time with home folks last Sunday evening, bhe returned to Lincoln, where she is employed, that even ing. Mr. and Mrs. Talmage Norris of Fairmont visited last week end with Mrs. Norris' brother, William Hud son and Mrs. Hudson and other rel atives and friends. Mrs. A. M. Longman was able to return home last Thursday after having spent several weeks in Lin coln receiving special treatments. She is feeling quite well at this time. William Brothwell, Jr., who has been employed in Leavenworth, Kan sas, for some time, was in town on Wednesday of this week. He has been called for service in the U. S. army. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Oberle and daughter of Lincoln spent Monday of this week in Eagle at the home of the former's parents Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Oberle. Lloyd is recuperating from a tonsil operation. Miss Florence West, who taught at Fort Madison, Iowa, and Richard West, who taught at Madison, Ne braska, have returned home and will spend the summer with their par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde West. Bernita Belle Earl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Earl, spent last week in Weeping Water as the guest of her cousin, Daralene Hoff- meister. Both girls enjoyed the re turn trip to Eagle on Monday of this week via the Missouri Pacific. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Crandell and Eldon left Sunday morning for Kear ney, where they will spend a week visiting Mrs. Crandell's brother and family and other relatives. Mr. Cran dell plans to attend the Custodian convention which is to be held there this week. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Carr and son, Richard, motored to Hubbell last Sunday afternoon, where they visited Mrs. Carr's parents. Due to the uncertain travel on the high ways caused by the heavy rains, they did not return home until the first of the week. Student Day at Methodist Church The annual "Methodist Student Day" was observed at the Eagle Methodist church last Sunday with a fine program presented by the Sunday school at eleven o'clock. Due to weather conditions, many people were unable to attend. If you haven't been attending our huiHiay morning services, plan to start next Sunday. E. W. Metzger, Pastor G. II. Palmer, S. S. Supt Red Cross Meeting A Red Cross meeting was held at the Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon, June 11th. The meeting was called to order by the local chairman, Mrs. Bert Lytle. A short patriotic program preceded the business session. The following officers were elect ed for the coming year: Mrs. Ber Lytle, vice chairman; Mrs. Edward Porter, vice chairman; Mrs. Clyde West, treasurer; Miss Dorothea Kelt secretary. The chairman appointed Mrs, E. Underwood to head the war pro duction activities, Mrs. llarley Smith as roll call chairman, and a commit tee of three, namely, Mrs. Marvin Carr, Mrs. Orin Lanning and Miss Dorothea Keil, for the purpose planning an activity by which the local organization's funds can increased. he Subscribe to The Journal City Council Approves Budget for Current Year Also Adopt Ordinance That Per mits Refunding of Bonds Discuss Parking. Despite the fact that floodlike conditions prevailed, all of the mem bers of the city council were on band Tuesday evening when Mayor Arnold Lillie called the legislative body to order. The council had voted to take Monday night for the Ak show at Omaha and so the Tues day meeting. The council adopted the annual estimate prepared by the finance committee for the fiscal year from 1941-42. This estimate of the prob able cost of the operation of the government and caring for financial obligations is estimated at $61,490. The expenses of each department can be found in the table appearing else where in the Journal. The city officials presented their reports for the month. City Clerk Albert Olson showed his collections for May to be $899.13, while City Treasurer M. D. Brown reported the funds on hand in the various funds at 517,186.95. The report of the city library board showed that in the year past the library had expended $2,750.25 in salaries and activities. The program of the year included co-operation with schools, the establishment of readine clubs. supplying books to the school, to the Masonic Home. The total number of books handled through the library was 40,206, an increase of 5,000 over the previous year in the number of books taken out. There are 3,062 subscribers to the library. Chief of Police Guy Long showed that for May there had been one arrest and fines and costs of $8.25. Chief of the Fire Department Dr O. Sandin reported one fire on May 31, a small shed valued at $60, lo cated on Pearl street between 8th and 9th streets. Chairman Webb of the tax and property committee, asked more time ! on the completion of the deal to sell city lots on North 11th street and this was granted. Chairman Noble of the streets, alleys and bridges committee, re- orted that several pieces of street work ordered carried out had been completed but that the rain had in terfered and most of the work was removing mud. Stop signs on the ide streets had been removed. Mayor Lillie called attention of the council to the condition of Tenth street near Locust where the grade in the street had permitted water diverting into nearby properties. Chairman Painter of the fire and water committee reported that his committee had conferred with the citizen's committee, in an endeavor to work out plans for relieving the water rate situation. They expected to have a report later. Chairman Schutz of the lighting committee reported that an electro lier near Main and Fourth was out and one at 4th and Pearl had the cable broke. Chairman Seiver of the police com mittee, reported that the police had received complaints about the shoot ing of firecrackers over the city. The police were.ordered to notify through the Journal that this was in vio lation of the city ordinance. Mayor Lillie suggested that the committee see dealers to try and secure co operation in regard to early sales. Chairman Seiver also stated that the double parking had been helped on Wednesday and Saturday by hav ing police at 5th and 6th streets to keep the traffic moving. lie also urged the matter of checking park ing on drains along the street. Councilman Noble pointed out the danger and the delay to traffic of "U" turns at the 6th street inter sections, many of these being by parties just idly driving up and down the street. Mayor Lillie was of the opinion that the police could regulate this and keep the traffic moving. Chief of Police Long suggested that parking in front of the sewer inlets be allowed on all side streets with the exception of Sixth street which must be kept open at all times on account of sudden rains. Chairman Schutz of the WPA com mittee reported that negotiations for the road to Oak Hill cemetery had apparently progressed very well The committee had been unable to contact County Engineer Mann since that time to get the necessary papers prepared for the project. ine petition received last year for a sidewalk project, by the WPA was returned to the files by Coun cilman WTebb, this project being out of consideration by the WPA. The matter of the erection of a sign by private parties along high way 75 through the city, was brought up by Chairman Seiver and referred to the streets, alleys and bridges committee. Ordinance No. 750, an ordinance to provide for the refunding of bonds of the city of Plattsmouth was read and under the suspension of the rules passed. Swatek, supplies STARTS ON NEW HOME .40 Snms time ago George Jaeger, superintendent of the BREX car shops here, purchased the property on Locust street known to many as the W. A. White residence. This old structure was torn down and way made for a fine new modern home that Mr. Jaeger is starting at once. The excavation for the basement of the house was started today and as soon as completed the work will be pushed on the other parts of the house. HERE FROM IOWA Mr. and Mrs. Ernest King and family of Thurman and Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Deleven and family of Glen wood, were here Sunday to visit at the home of W. P. Allbee and fam ily, Mr. Allbee being father of the ladies. Delbert Allbee, who has been visiting at Thurman. also returned with the party and accompanied by Robert Marshall, who will visit here for a time. RETURN FROM OUTING Mr. and Mrs. John W. Alwin and Mrs. Flora Wells, of Los Angeles, sister of Mr. Alwin, have returned from a visit of several days at Win ner, South Dakota. They were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Elwell. cousins of Mr. Alwin and Mrs. Wells. They report a very nice rain in ine Winner locality which has in recent years been suffering a great deal from the drouth. Leonard died intestate on or about August 1, 193 4, being a resident and inhabitant of Missouri and died seized of the following described real estate, to-wit: Lots three (3), four (4), five (5), and six (6) in Block twelve (12), in the City of Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska; and Lot eleven (11) in Block twenty nine (29), in the City of Platts mouth, Cass County, Nebraska leaving as his sole and only heirs at law the following named persons, to-wit: Arthur J. Leonard, Violette L. Thomas. Ruth A. Denny. Eliza beth Journey, and Herbert Leonard. That no application for administra tion has been made and the estate of said decedent has not been admin istered in the State of Nebraska; That the interest of the petitioner in the above described real estate is a sister,' and interested in said prop erty, and praying for a determina tion of the time of the death of said Carroll V. Leonard and of his heirs, the degree of kinship and the right of descent of the real property be longing to the said deceased, in the State of Nebraska.
