PLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOURNAL PAGE FOUR MONDAY, MAUCH 17, 1941. Mrs. Kate Oliver Morgan Passes 75th Birthday long Time Resident Here, Now Liv ing in Omaha, Comes to This City to Observe Event. Mrs. D. C. Morgan, who is stay ins at the Keen Hotel in Omaha, observed her seventy-fifth birth anni versary Friday. Mrs. Morgan eame to Plattsmouth yesterday to cele brate her birthday and is spending the remainder of the week with friends. Kate Oliver, daughter of the late George A. and Kate Oliver, pioneer Pellevne. Nebraska settlers, was born on March 14. IS 06 in Belle vue. Six daughters and one son com prised the Oliver family. Iter father, a Civil war veteran, was the first contractor in the territory of Nebras ka, served as county clerk at Belle vue four years, and was one of the co-founders of the Bellevtie Presby terian church. The late Mrs. Oliver's birth anniversary falls on St. Pat rirk's day. The Olivers' only son died in Bellevue and the father fol lowed him in death twenty days later in 1S76. Mrs. Oliver and her family came to Plattsmouth in 1SSC and occu pied what was then known as the old Matthews' home, where the li brary now stands. In earlier years Mrs. Morgan served as a school teacher; at one time she was deputy clerk of the district court. Her wedding to D. C. Morgan, son of prominent and pioneer Flatts uiouth people, took plate December 3, 1S90 at her mother's home in riattmouth. Her husband held many public offices. lie was Cass county clerk for many years, served on the board of education, and held the postmastership for nine years. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were staunch democrats, and the latter still hasn't changed her politics. On January 2-1, 1 9 1 8 Mr. Morgan passed away, and a few years later their only daughter. Miss Gertrude died in Aug ust, 1930 in Long Beach, California. With the exception of a two-year visit in California, Mrs. Morgan has lived in Nebraska all of her life. Fifty of these years were spent in Plattsmouth. A lifetime member of the Presbyterian church, Mrs. Mor gan was quite active in the local church, and now holds a membership in the Bellevue church, which her father assisted in building. Mrs. Morgan stated she was the first president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church here. Not only was she an active figure in church circles, but she. likewise, was a member and diligent worker in many civic affairs. She was formerly an active member of Chapter F, P.E.O., former member of the Wom an's club, and still holds a member ship in the Rebekah lodge. She and two sisters are the only Immediate survivors of the Oliver family. All three live in Omaha. Her sifters are Mrs. A. W. Hallam (Mar garet), and Mrs. Charles Fades (Julia). Mr. Mapes was a son of the late George Mapes and was born and spent his boyhood in this community. lie was educated in the local school and will be remembered by many of the older residents. He had followed the teaching pro fession and while in the Canal Zone a number of years ago contracted a fever while engaged in one of the government schools, from the ef fects of which he has continued to suffer for the past 15 years. He is survived by mother, two brothers, Charles Mapes. superin tendent of the Bethany high school and Dean Mapes of Louisville. He was nephew of Miss Margaret Mapes of this city. ATTENTION CITIZENS The thirty-eighth annual conven tion of the Women's clubs of the first district will be held at the Presbyterian church March 27 and 2S with the Junior and Senior Wom en's clubs as hostesses. This is Plattsmouth's convention as well as the Women's clubs and in a hostess city every inhabitant is expected to act as a welcoming committee of one. Please, Plattsmouth citizens, give your fullest cooperation. If you have a room to spare for one night only and (no meals attached) please c,3ll the chairman of the assignment committee. Mrs. William Woolcott or Mrs. E. H. Wescott, and offer it. When over 100 delegates have to be housed it. is quite a task and any h'Mp is deeply appreciated. Most delegates like to shop in a new town and all will have to eat so the convention should bring much business to the town. FOUR KILE STUDY CLUB Four Mile Study club met March 11th at Mrs. Ralph Wehrbein's. Mrs. John Wehrbein assisted in the en tertaining. The lesson, "Our Neighbors, Can ada. Mexico," was very ably dis cussed by Mrs. Leonard Stoehr. Most of the members were pres ent. Mrs. Frank Bierl was a visi- ;tor. After the lesson and business ses sion pinochle was played. Prizes were won by Mrs. Ella Nolting and Mrs. Mary Mayabb. A luncheon completed a very pleasant afternoon. SETTLED IN NEW HOME Mr. and Mrs. Fred Essert, who moved to Plattsmouth from Albion, Nebraska, are now settled in their new home, which they rent from Miss Christina Hansen on Ave. G, be tween 12th and 13th streets. The Eserts have three children Mar vin, a freshman in high school, Lu cille, a junior, and Hazel, a senior. All three children attend Platts mouth high school. The Esserts, farmers, resided in years. They farmed for many years. Albion three near Ashland MANY ATTEND OPENING From Saturday's Dally The Jasper flower shop on North Gtb street was a very busy place tv.is morning as Mr. Jasper and daughter, Miss Betty, held the for n.al opening of the shop to the pub lic. The first 100 ladies calling at the shop were presented with a lovely gardenia, the finest that Mr. Jasper could find on the market. The visitors came early and it was but a short time before the flowers were presented and added very much to the happiness and enjoyment of the recipients. HOLD LENTEN SERVICES From Thursday's Dally The St. Paul's church was well filled last evening for the Leuten services which have been arranged by Rev. S. G. Schick for the season. Rev. J. W. Taenzler, pastor of the First Christian church, was the guest speaker and gave a very inspiring message on the lessons of the season of preparation for the Easter day. Frank A. Cloidt, well known solo ist of the city, gave the very fine 'Fear Ye Not" by Dudley Buck as a part of the service. ASKS FOR DIVORCE A suit for divorce was filed in the office of the clerk of the dis triet court entitled Roy Dupree vs. Alice Dupree, the law firm of' Fou- cheK Ac Garnett representing the plaintiff. The parties were married April 18, 1940, the petition sets forth. - RETURNED TO TEXAS Richard Hitt, Plattsmouth, who was a member of the Civilian Con servation Corps for eight months, has returned to Houston, Texas and is now joined with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hitt and family. Richard is to enter business college in Texas. , Vr. BASEBALL IN THE AIR The close of the basketball sea son has left a breathing spell in the athletic program of the high school but not "for long, track and j baseball now preparing to contend ' for the activities of the outdoor ; sports. There Is a very fine showing of the veterans out and a great bunch of the younger players ready to take p.rt in the baseball activities this sprinsr and summer. The veterans include Captain Grover Parriott, Joe Noble, Gerald Petet, Albin Chovanec, Tom Gradoville, Ralph Hilt, Harry Shiffer, with Don Martin reporting later. The newer players reporting have been Albert Richards, Eldon Vro man, Russell Nielsen, Ralph Park ening, Wilbur Eaton, Dick Noble, Sanford Short, Jimmy Short, Tom I -vrdy, Vernon Shiffer, Bob Traudt, Marcel Vinduska. The team will have plenty of com petition as Omaha South, Omaha Central, Omaha Technical. Papil lion and Gretna have been sched uled. The first game will probably be on April 4th against Tapillion. There will be no games on Friday for two weeks. Pitching propsects are Grover Par riott, Ralph Hilt, Joe Noble, Gerald Petct, Albin Chovanec. In the receiving department Wil bur Eaton and Albin Chovanec are looking good. RIVERVIEW CLUB March 11 the Riverview club was entertained at the home of Mrs. Rob ert Patterson. All members but one was present. We had four visitors, Mrs. Percy Wheeler, Mrs. Herb Church, Mrs. Norman Worthan and Miss Marie Thomason. Mrs. Percy Wheeler is a new member. We had election of officers, the re sults being: Mrs. Greeley Beil, presi dent; Mrs. Harry Ganaway, vice president; Mrs. Bud Nickles, secretary-treasurer; Mrs. Albert Warga, reporter; Mrs. Robert Patterson, mu sic ; Mrs. Percy Wheeler, pianist. A stork shower was held for Mrs. Robert Rea, she receiving many lovely and useful gifts. Our hostess, Mrs. Patterson, and Mrs. Brinklow served a very delicous luncheon. April 8 will be our next meeting with Mrs. Charles Koke and co-host Mrs. Albert Warga. Program leader will be Mrs. Cecelia Campbell. CLUB REPORTER. IN METHODIST HOSPITAL Mrs. A. E. Johnson, wife of Dr. A. E. Johnson, local dentist, is in the Methodist hospital. Omaha, re covering from a major operation. Mrs. Johnson has been confined at the hospital almost two weeks. (The said Joseph II. McMaken being the owner of a half interest with Fred M. McMaken, in the McMaken Transfer Company, of Plattsmouth. Nebraska, a Co Partnership) leaving as his sole and only heirs at law the following named persons, to-wit: Emma McMaken, widow; Henry C. McMaken, Raymond G. McMaken. Gladys Taylor, Joseph G. McMaken, Fred M. McMaken, children, all of law ful age. That no application for adminis tration has been made and the es tate of said decedent has not been administered in the State of Nebras ka; That the interest of the petitioner in the above described real estate is the widow, and praying for a deter mination of the time of the death of said Joseph II. McMaken and of his heirs, the degree of kinship and the right of descent of the real property belonging to the said deceased, in the State of Nebraska. It is ordered that the same stand for hearing 011 the 2Sth day of March, 19 41, before the County Court of Cass County in the court house at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, at the hour of ten o'clock a. m.
