Fred Dickson, president of Nebraska Elks Association; Hon. Fred Winters, past state commander of American Le gion; and Hon. Judge Simon Shada. Among the winners in this contest was Miss Lillian OB. Sedlak, who was awarded second prize for the follow ing essay: " What the United States of America Means to Me." It means democracy to me, first of tall a day-by-day way of living. And democracy springs from respect for personality my own and other people's. It means tolerance of dif fering opinions, treating others a3 I would be treated, faith In the possi bilities of common folk like myself, land the desire for liberty to think, Ispeak, and worship according to my conscience, and the willingness to 'grant the same freedom to others, j It is a way of running a family Idepending not so much on coercion jas on voluntary good will and co operation. It is, a way of living with various races and ' religions seeing jthe human being beneath the dlffer jences and always treating him with respect. It meanB to me today much more than a desirable set of privileges. jit is a cause to be cared for, watched lover and furthered by thought and sacrifices. j Politically and economically, it is a community of people where liberty has issued in fraternity and fra ternity has expressed itself in a fair equality of opportunity and condi tion. We cannot inherit the demo cracy of the United States and leave the matter there: It depends on spir itual qualities of ' life and character that must be reborn in each new generation in the hearts of its citi-'zens. First prize went to Edgar S. Far ley, Men's Hall, .Kearney, Nebraska, and O. R. LeVine of McCook, Ne braska, won third honor. CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH (On Louisville-Plattsmouth Road) Rev. A.
