Henry Frar.zen has been remodel ing the John Emshoff home and is also building a new granary. Wm. Wulf returned Friday from a visit with his son Lloyd and wife of San Francisco. California. Mrs. J. Zimmerer and Oscar and Mrs. Wm. Gollner were shopping in Lincoln last Friday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Linhardt. Jr. and son John were Sunday guests of Mrs. Mary McCaig at Elmwood. Elmer Hallstrom and Oscar Zim merer served free watermelon to shoppers in Avoca Saturday night. The picture show under the man agement of Xorval Bothwell, of Elm wood, was well attended last Friday night. Cullen and Miss Phyllis Straub attended the board meeting of the Lincoln Diocesan Council of Catholic Women at the Cornhusker hotel in Lincoln last Friday after noon. Mrs. Cullen was appointed Youth chairman for the Lincoln dio cese. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sill. Mrs. Al bert Schutz, Mrs. Harry Mickle. Mrs. E'mer Hennings and Miss Eertha Neuraeister attended the flower show in Omaha Tuesday. This was a rart of the Ak-Sar-Ben live stock and horse show, and comprised a very f.ne showing of fall flowers. Project leaders Meet Mrs. Fred Haverman, Mrs. Leo McCann and Mrs. Elmer Corbin held a meeting last Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Elmer Corbin. It was decided at the meeting to dis continue the project club. Returns to Florida Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hallstrom and family and Mrs. R. L. Propst were dinner guests at the Wm. Propst heme in Ralston. The dinner was given in honor of Mr. R. L. Fropst before he leaves for his home in Lake Worth, Florida. MANLEY NEWS Mr. and Mrs. John A. Stander were Plattsmouth visitors last Wednesday. Murray school played a return en- Easement with the Manley football team last Wednesday, resulting in a score of 2G to 6 in favor of the! home team. The Philpot school team also played here on Thursday, the score being 27 to 0 in favor of Manley. Murray school will meet Manley in Murray next Friday at 4:30 p. m. Enjoyable Eastern Trip Miss Anne V. Rauth of Omaha spent the week end with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Rauth. Miss Rauth has just returned from a three weeks' vacation in the east, during which time she visited New Orleans, going from there by boat to New York, where she attended the World's fair. She also spent some time in Washington, D. C, Boston and Chicago. She returned to Omaha Monday morning, accompanied by her par ents, who transacted business in Plattsmouth on their way home. Many Attend Dinner The chicken dinner sponsored by the ladies of St. Patrick's church was a great success. A splendid dinner was served that drew compliments from the large number attending. There were guests present from Lin coln, Omaha, Louisville. Elmwood, Avoca, Murdock and Plattsmouth. The ladies are deeply appreciative to tho;e who in any way contributed to the success of the affair and made it a social and financial success. Attended C. Y. 0. Convention Misses Katherine Sheehan and Norma Welte and Leo and Paul O'Brien attended the Catholic Youth Organization congress at Lincoln last Sunday and Monday. The convention cpened Sunday morning with a sol emn Pontifical Mass, followed thru cut the two days by business and social meetings. It was closed by a dance in the ballroom of the Corn husker hotel on Monday evening. Those who attended report a very fine time and much valuable infor mation received. Greenwood Mr. and Mrs. Ross Casey spent Sunday in Omaha. Mrs. Blattler of Adams spent last week at the Earl Iden home. Mr. and Mrs. Elton Keller were in Lincoln Wednesday night. Clymer were visi tors in Omaha Wednesday after noon. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kelly and Mrs. Ersy McNurlin attended the Ak-Sar- Een live stock and horse show last Sunday. Misses Margaret. Thelma and Mamie Holka visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Holka, last Sat urday night. Mrs. Gaye Wright entertained Loui3 Wright and family at a birth day dinner Sunday. It was Aaron Wright's birthday. Mrs. Hazel Clouse and Mrs. II. Brehra entertained the Dorcas soci ety Friday. A nice crowd attended and a delicious lunch was enjoyed by all. Mr. and Mrs. William Buck and family returned Saturday from North Dakota, where they had been called to the bedside of Mrs. Buck's moth er. She- was greatly improved when they left for home. Homecoming Day Yesterday (October 13) was home coming day at the Christian church, combined with a district missionary rally. Services were held both morn ing and afternoon, with a basket dinner at noon. Although written be fore the meeting, we are safe in say ing there was a good attendance. Husbands Guests The L. C. Bushnell, Mrs. Walter Thimghan and Mrs. Axel Zaar were among the women from South Bend precinct who attended the republican tea given by the republican women of Cass county, in Louisville Tuesday afternoon. They report a very pleas ant and instructive program. Mr. and Mrs. Fosberg had a pleas ant surprise Friday when their nephew, Oscar Nelson, Jr., of Cali fornia, and his mother. Mrs. O. F. Nelson and Mrs. M. E. Sandy called. Mrs. Fosberg accompanied the group to Omaha, where they enjoyed visit ing relatives. Mrs. Fosberg returned Wednesday on the Rock Island. Iowa. Evening callers were Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dill and Jamie. Mrs. George Braun and Mrs. F. J. Knecht drove to Lincoln Tuesday. At noon they were luncheon guests of Mrs. Knecht's son, Bill Rosencrans, and Sam Long, University of Nebraska-students, who are doing light housekeeping in an apartment there. They found the boys enjoying their university work and making good progress. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Long drove to Lincoln Sunday evening, taking their son Sam and Bill Rosencrans back to school. The grammar room played a game I of soft ball here Friday afternoon. The visiting team came from near Wabash with Miss Georgetta Hazen as their teacher. The boys played a very good game, losing by a close margin. Many compliments were given teachers and hoys of both teams for their fine co-operation and sportsmanship. We hope to play again. Results of Precinct Caucuses The republican caucus to select precinct candidates was called to order Tuesday evening by Walter Thimghan, chairman. Mrs. Jason Streight acted as secretary. They chose Marvin Bushnell as their can didate for precinct assessor; Glenn Weaver for justice of the peace and Alfred Rikli for road overseer. The democratic caucus had Albert Blum as its chairman and Harold Richards as secretary. Ed Rau was j named as the party candidate for as sessor, William Blum for justice of the peace and Frank Koziol for road overseer. WABASH NEWS Mrs. L. R. Stanley was a Lincoln visitor Wednesday, calling on her daughter, Mrs. Fred Patzel. Henry and Rueben Knaup are busy cutting sorgo in the vicinity of Ne hawka. The boys have been very busy this season with the harvesting of this crop. Mrs. H. H. Gerbeling is suffer ing from the result of a severe fall which occurred a few days ago. She is slightly improved at this time, but is still very lame. Charles McKinstry, who has been employed on the Dave Martin farm has finished his work and is at home. Charles is getting ready for a big corn husking spree. Ralph Richards is busy hunting some calves which escaped from his pasture recently. The calves were trucked here.. from Omaha and in their strange surroundings strayed away. Hobert Henson is very busy and has been for the past three days. Hobert is filling a large silo with the assistance of his neighbors. Oscar Domingo is furnishing the cutter for the job. Harold Richards, a member of the National Guard, reports to home folks that he is now in service at the state capitol building, his duties com ing under the selective service de partment. Lester Eosworth, the Wabash mail messenger, was a passenger on the Missouri Pacific Saturday, paying the neighboring town of Weeping Water a visit and attending to some busi ness affairs as well. W. L. Murfin is improving the ap pearance of the village by burning weeds and cleaning up in general around his place. This kind of work is commendable in most of our towns in the fall as well as spring, but is more often neglected at this sea son. The Marshall elevator is a busy place these days as Mr. Marshall is storing corn under the government contract and the time is at hand when the crib room is needed very much on the farms, making it neces sary to move corn under seal to new storage places. Constructed Cattle Barn Louis Wendt. with the assistance of his father, August Wendt, Sr., and two brothers. Fred and August. Jr., have been building a new and much larger cattle barn, using material from the old one and some additional material. Besides affording a place for the cattle, the new barn provides a place for the storage of an abund ance of feed, both hay and grain. PARROT GOES ALONE TO SCHOOL PITTSFIELD, Mass. (UP) Like Mary's lamb, Tolly the parrot goes to school. Owned by John D. Ryan, Jr., the 52-year-old parrot appeared alone at school one day and was ush ered in by the principal. Miss Grace Muenchau spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Muenchau. She is a stu dent at Teru Teachers' college. The former Miss Lola Rueter, who ag married recentiy is to be hon- cred with a miscellaneous shower on Friday afternoon at the church base ment. Miss Katherine Edwards, who i3 in training at the St. Elizabeth hos pital in Lincoln spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Edwards. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edwards re turned home from Denver the latter part of the week after spending a few days visiting their son Boyd and wife, who reside in the Mile High city. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cook left for Chicago Tuesday, where they will spend a few days with their two1 children. Mrs. Roger Williams and husband, family. and Wesley Cook and Club Elects Officers The S. O. S. club held a covered dJsh luncheon at the home of Mr8 Ellis Mickle Tuesday afternoon. After a bounteous dinner, the members gave their garden reports and elected officers. Those elected were Mrs. Dinges, president; Mrs. Rehmeier, vice presi dent; Mrs. A. B. Stroemer, secretary and treasurer. This closes the club year for the season and they will hold no more meetings until spring. Entertains Club Mrs. August Johnson delightfully entertained the Reading club mem bers at her home Thursday after noon. Mrs. Frank Edwards and Mrs. Copple gave an interesting paper about Mrs. Wendell Willkie and Mrs. McNary. Miss Smock, who is a house guest at the Johnson home, gave several ; entertaining readings. A large crowd was present to en joy the afternoon and very delicious refreshments were served by the Thostess. Program Well Attended The Rally Day services and pro gram Sunday morning were well at tended. The Sunday school sponsored a program during the Sunday school hour. Each class participated and made the service a very fine one. The theme 'Help the Church School Make Their Church to Grow" was well carried out. The church was beautifully decor ated with autumn leaves and garden flowers. P. T, A. Meeting On Wednesday evening, October 16, at S:00 o'clock at the school house the public will have the op portunity of hearing a most interest ing and entertaining address by Dr. Lyman of the University of Nebraska. Dr. Lyman is an excellent speaker and always greatly enjoyed by his audience. Remember the date, Wednesday evening of this week, October 16, and be on hand to hear this entertaining and well informed speaker. The women of the Christian church will meet on Wednesday, October 16 to give the church a thorough house cleaning. Cecil Hollenbeck, accompanied by his aunt, Mrs. L. Hollenbeck, called at the Wilson Gilmore home last Wednesday afternoon. The first meeting of the W. S. C. S. of the Methodist church was held Friday at the home of Mrs. Howard Capwell. A good attendance Is report ed and plans were made for the coming year's work. A letter has been received from Raymond Kunz stating that he had been at Pasadena. Calif., but was back in San Diego at the time of writing. He had also visited Holly wood and Beverly Hills. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bain and son Dean called at the Lewis Hollenbeck home last Sunday morning. They were on their way to Nebraska City for dinner. They report A. W. This will make a very nice improve ment. Father and Son Banquet Last Tuesday evening there was held in the basement of the Metho dist church the annual Fathers and Sons' banquet, with an attendance of around 70. An exceptionally fine banquet was served by a group of the church ladies after which all en joyed a program of songs and toasts. LeRoy Cook was toastmaster. Corn was the theme of the evening. Coun ty Agent Waldo was present and rpoke on the subject. Basket Dinner Sunday All members as well as friends of the Methodist church are invited to a basket dinner at the church base ment next Sunday, October 13. This event is in honor of Rev. Lind and family. Home from Eastern Trip Mrs. Emily Gonzales returned last Sunday from a two weeks' vacation trip. She spent the time with her sen and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gonzales, at Washington. D. C. She reports a very interesting and enjoy able time. Accident Occurred Saturday An accident occurred at the cor ner three miles west of Elmwood last Saturday, when the Standard Oil truck driven by Verle Fleischman and another car driven by Jim Sch lanker collided. The truck was trav eling west and the other car south at the time. The force of the col lision overturned the truck several times. Donald Elliott, who was rid ing in the truck, was thrown out and received a cut on the head. Both drivers escaped serious in juries. C,'"nbf for the Journal.
