Mesdantes Thompson and McPher son of Falls City were the guests of Mrs. Cheoaenian recently. Harry Baldwin enjoyed a \isit from ills mother who arrived from Nemaha City the first of the week. B. F. ' each returned from Omaha Friday morning, when' lie attended a shoot given by the gun club. Miss Martha Howard returned to her home m Perry, Iowa last week after spending a few days with Miss Gertrude Ltitn. Joe Estes was down from Stella Tuesday and erected a fine monument at the grave of his little son in the Verdon cemetery. Miss Morris -went to Salem Sat urday, where she will spend her sum mer vacation, after closing a very sitec-’ssful term of school lu re. .!, it. Cliamherlain returned to his home in Nelson, Nob., last week after a visit to ills sister. Mrs. M. Meiiza and his brother, .1. M Chamberlain. Prof. Berkey closed his year of school with the Verdon district on Thursday evening. He will spend a part of ills vacation at his home in Davenport. Nell., and the balance in Oregon with ills brother. i he commencement exercises were held In HaP's opera house Friday ev ening. The stage was nicely decorat ed with potted plants of various kinds, and with the < lass colors, lav ender and cream. A splendid pro gram was prepared for the occasion. Mrs ldllio Wilkinson died very suddenly Monday evening of heart failure. She had ... in poor health for several months, hut was thought to be Improving. She was a faithful metnliei of the Evangelical church and was highly respected by all her friends and acquaintances. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Wm, Estes of Laird, Col., and Miss Verna Wilkinson of this place, an aged mother, two sisters and one brother. The funeral services were conducted by Hey. Qearries at the Evangelical church and interment was in the Wr don cemetery. John Cornelius and John Tighe left Thursday for Canada, where they will !i ok for investments. Mrs. K. J. Curdy returned Sat urday from Kink City, Mo., where she had been visiting relatives. Miss Mary Gandy returned Satur day from Lincoln, where she had been visiting her sister, Mrs. Fred Noble. Miss Jessie Draper, teaehei of the eighth grade, pleasantly entertain ed her class at her home Wednesday evening. Mrs. John Powers, Sr., returned to tier home in this city Friday after j spending several months with rela tives in Peru. Mrs. 10. Cox accompanied by her friend, Mrs. Shellenbarger, both of I’awnee. spent several days this week with Humboldt friends. Mrs. 10. S. Davis returned from Lin coln Sunday, where she had been visiting her daughter. Maybelle, who is attending school at that place. Joseph Moyer and wife went to Si. Joe Wednesday to visit their son, Willie, who is receiving medical treatment in a hospital at that place. Mrs. lOliza Heard, accompanied by Mrs. James Reed and little- daughter, of Hildreth, Neb., attended C. L. Mann s funeral. They remained for a short vis't with relatives. James Atwood left Saturday for St. Joe, where he visited his son, Dora, who is receiving medical treat ment at that place. Mrs. Dora At wood left the following day for a brief visit at the same place. After a few hours Illness, L. C. Mann died at his home at an early hour Wednesday, May IS. He was one of the pioneer residents of this section, having located here forty years ago. and was one of Hum boldt's most highly respected and honored citizens. His death was a shock to *he community. The in fluence of his quiet, honest, upright life will long he felt. Funeral ser vice's were held at the Christian church Friday afternoon. Rev. Last week witnessed -tin' closing exercises of the Harada schools. On Thursday evening were the eighth grade commencement exercises. The class comprised four members, Harry Slagle, Harold Bolejaek, Nellie Butler and Fay Slagle A very interesting program was rendered, tho main feat ure being an address by Supt. T. .T. Oliver. At the close of his ad dress lie presented the diplomas to the class of 1010. On the following day a sumptuous picnic dinner was enjoyed by the pupils and a few pa trons, after which a charming pro gram was rendered mainly by the little folks. A large number of par ents and, friends were present. As tokens of esteem and friendship the pupils were presented by / the teachers with photos that might be preserved as souvenirs of tlio years work. We regret that these teach ers are not to be with us for the coming year. Miss Riggs will teach in Shubert and Miss Lilly will at tend school in Peru and finish her course there! STELLA. M-s. George Mitchell has been ill the past Week. Mrs. Pete Allen of Omaha is visit ing her children In Stella. Charles Allot of Kansas City was in Stella flit' first of the week. Rev. Hinkle and family are enjoy ing a visit from bis mother, from Gen eva, Neb. John Vaught and wife visited rel atives in Humboldt and Pawnee City last week. Ilyral Baldwin is enjoying a week in the country with her aunt, Mrs. G. L. Slocum. Hr. Harry Andrews and w ife of Bar ada visited Stella friends a couple of days last week. Rev. Murry of Shubert preached at the Christian church at this place Sunday morning. Frank Henderson of Shubert spent last week with his unde, John Hen derson and family. Mrs. James O'Donald and daughter. Adah, of Vuburn visited Miss Fannie O’Donald several days last week. School closed last Friday at noon and the teachers have gone to their several homes through the state. Miss Jennie Thompson chapeioned the high school girls at a base ball game at Shubert Friday afternoon. Mrs. Frank Awe of Howe attended commencement at Stella, her sister, Miss Neva Cowel being one of the graduates. M"s. Carl Wilson and two children of Omaha were called here last week by the illness of Mrs. Wilson’s moth er, Mrs. Mattie Hodge. Mrs. Robert Tynan and two little childtcn enjoyed a picnic with the little folks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. McMullen Friday. Mrs. 10. A. Jennings of Salem visit ed her daughters last week and at tended the graduation of her grand daughter, .Miss Helen Baldwin. .Miss Lissa Colglazier spent several days in Auburn las! week visiling Rev. McFarland and family who are making preparations to move to Zion City, III. I tu body ol the Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. .less Brown of Falls City was brought here Friday after noon and laid beside a little one that was burled about nine years ago. Mrs. Weller received word a few days ago that her son, Ralph Weller at Omaha, who has been sick with typhoid fever for several months was worse and that the doc tor and the nurse had again been called. Class day was observed at the high school building last Wednesday af ternoon. The school room was filled with guests and each one on the program rendered their orations ex c< Uently, 10. A Kroh and Fred Gilbert re turned from South Dakota last Satur day, Mr. Gilbert filed on (10 acres of land hut will not go there to live. Governor Shellenberger delivered the class address for the class of 1 n10 at the1 .opera house Thursday evening. The address was certainly fine and the young folks who were just starting in the "battle of life" rere'ved lots of advice and encourage ment. A large crowd was in attend ance. Quite a number from j^ere attend ed the ball games in Falls City last week. Mrs. (I. Wittwer left this week for a visit with relatives in southern Kansas. Isaac lUngett is reemodeling his residence and will have a fine mod ern home when it is finished. Rev. Adams of Humboldt, who re cently held a meeting at the Christ ian church near here, has arrang ed to preach for the congregation ev ery two weeks at three o'clock Sun day afternoon, beginning next Sunday. A party of ladies consisting of Mes dames Bruhn, McGinnis, Bacon and Smith drove to Sabetha last Wed nesday and spent the day with friends. Peck and family spent the latter part of hist week in Morrill. Kas., vis iting with relatives and attending a love feast of their church. —John It. The St. Joe Commercial club spent about three hours in this city Mon day morning. Mr. and Mrs. John Pope and two children spent Sunday with relatives at Troy, Kas. Rosa Mann returned to her home in White Cloud Monday, after a visit with relatives here., Mrs. William Gooseman and little daughter of St. Joseph, is visiting relatives in Rulo this week. Mrs. Johu Young left Monday for Morrill, Kas., where she was called by the death of a relative. Mrs. .1. A. Osborne and son, Mer rill lift Wednesday for a two weeks' visit with relatives in Dorchester. Jim Mendenhall of Wymore came down Sunday night to join the commercial club on their trip west ward. Steve and will Cunningham left Monday night for California, in ans wer to a message that their mother was worse. A crowd from Rulo chartered hay racks and automobiles one evening last week and went out to remind Wm. Threlkeld Hint they remember ed his birthday if lie did not. The evening was so pleasantly spent that the merry crowd did not reach town until two o'clock the next morn ing. Pubic school closed Friday. The smaller children held a picnic in the park in the afternoon, which was en joyed by the little folks. The com mencement exercises were held in the M. E. church on Thursday even ing. there being two graduates and two post-graduates. Wm. ,T. David son, Chancellor Nebraska Wesleyan University delivered an interesting address. J. A. Hinkle, a member of the school board, presented the dip lomas.
