BAMBOOZLING THE PUBLIC
SLEIGHT-OF-HAND ADVERTIS
ING OF FAKE DRUGS
‘•For Ways That Are Dark” the
Medicine "Faker” Is In a
Class By Himself.
A ll' ll a maiiuI'actiiii r lias something
in sell ami brings it into publicity in
.in honest manner, representing it for
what it really is, anil not trying to
hide his Identity behind a newspaper,
We respect llilll ' Veil it' Ills product
doesn’t appeal to us. But when an
advertiser gets his ad into the news
paper without “earmarks” under th"
guise of a receipt, vouched for by
sonii oilier paper, H would have to
tie a pri;Uv good product that would
sell if the buyer knew tile fuels.
Heeentl.v there Inis been u lot of
tills style of advertising in eonnection
witii articles void by druggists.
\n item appears Hi the newspaper
purporting in lie taken from some
other pupi l or Journal, usually a re
llgous publication, which recites the
wonderful benefit and cures obtained
by using a simph compound to lie
found at tlie drag stores. Then it
goes (III to gi\i' the prescription, just
as if they were nil staple.everywhere
to be found goods, and (lie names
sound very drug like.
The reader is deluded into the be
lief that the newspaper is publishing
fn i ;t Innble formula whieh lie can
i til out and have filled at any drug
store. Ii is nil got up willi Intent to
d. i - ;\. , o I have called this "sleight
of hand" advertising. The method is
this Hu ei igii.nl publication, religi
ous or other’ . .!■ Is paid for I lie space
o» ctiph d in i ii' first instance and
all sub . (pu nt newspapers arc paid
regular Advertising rates for the
spar. occupied The persoription is
made up of one or more regular, well
known articles, but another
article with a name that
smacks of the Materia Atediea and
leaves a bad taste in the mouth, is
also inserted. This Is the “joker”
and is a secret preparation made by
the advertiser which can only lie ob
tained from him at a price that af
fords him a very excellent profit. I's
ually tile price of this item to the
"ultimate consumer'' is fifty cents,
li is purely and simply a patent med
icine' or "proprietary," not a regu
lar drug. The druggist may stock it
and fill the presc ription if he chooses
and tin' remedy may be fairly hon
est, but tile advertising is not. As a
rule the remedy has little value, be
cause it is cheapened to make a big
profit for tlie advertiser.
Compound Kargon was the first
remedy advertised In this way and
when il was put out it proved such
a winner thut a flood of others fol
lowed and there are now dozens of
these preparations exploited in this
manner. Here are a few of them:
Thargol, Therox, Compound Kar-i
gon, Oil of .Virgin I’iuc, Marmoln.
1 'tt)< oil 11, Torris Compound, Coricen
trated 1'ine, Cardiol, I’nruotis Lexo
niea, Oadoniene, Bnltnorort, Dark
ola, eioroln, Quinoin, Luxor, Aiuorol. j
Cerol, Itorothoi, Beta Catitliol, Almo
zoln, Crystos. Spurmax, Cautlirox.Kai
dene, l’hrosol, Laxu-Tonlquo, Dei-A
Totie, I lydrasl inol, Trrracol, Maya
tone Kllxir Cura I’ayn. All of these
are not advertised in exactly tin1
same way, hut they purport lo lie
drugs or known compounds whleh
they are not.
All sound of tin1 drug shop, hut
they are only known to the druggist
ns patent medicines and are so
classed in (lie wholesale price lists.
Compound Kargon is a fair sample
of all. It lias been dropped now. No
advertising lias been done lately and
it is nearly played mil Noitq of them
last very long, but it is easy to coin
a new name and start another.
Compound Kargon was sold to
druggists in one-ounce bottles and
the prescription called for one-ounce
combined with syrup of Sarsaparril
la and Fluid Extract of Dandelion,
both well known official remedies.
.Vow liii' contents of this one-ounce
bottle was, in my opinion, identical
with the fluid extract of buchu
Juniper and acetate of potash ex
cept that it was only about one-third
the strength of the official prepara
tion. This fluid extract is worth
about fifteen ceents per ounce at re
tail so t hat the purchaser got a weak
or extract at throe times the price
of Du* standard and that netted a
very neat profit for tin- advertiser.
This Compound Kargon was of some
benefit to purchasers; it could have
been better. No doubt some of these
other preparations have a little merit,
but some of them that we have exam
ined have no merit whatever. In
one instance a Dickie's worth of borax
is all Die customer gets for his
money, lint we are not talking about
the preparation itself. It is the ad
1ertlsing we an* condemning. It is
tricky, sleight of hand, a pretense,
and tin1 reader of tiie advertisement
is so badly deceived that in most
(Uses in- will not believe the drug
gist who explains lo him, but
goes out and buys at some other
store.
When you see one of this kind of
ads in the future, pass it up, or
take it til ils real value. If you want
lo try if tiie druggist will get it for
you, Imt don't expect him lo keep it
in stock.
livery druggist who stocks up
with these tilings is sure to get
"stuck" with some of them at the
windup—and some of them "wind
up" in a very short time.
Most of them are absolutely worth
less made to sell, not made to cure.
It is an old game in a new form.
In the original as it used to appear
iii tin1 papers, some minister, so call
ed, nr some woman, who had suffered
from disease had by some chance
found a wonderful cure, and being of
a philanthropic nature offered to
send it. free to all suffering human
ity, They sent the perscription all
right on request, but it always had
one or two constituents not known
to the trade and the druggist could
not fill it, so it had to go back to
the* “philanthropist," who filled it for
a consideration and so got his work
in. Our Uncle Samuel put these
fellows out of business by means of
a fraud order in the postal service.
Rut these later fakers do not use
the mails, so a fraud order will not
touch them.
