Why the Republican Party Should Be Successful Next November The Republican party was found ed upon the principle thaj this government was established to pro tect for all times the rights and op portunities of every individual from abridgment. That principle it has successfully maintained. Through the Civil war it conse crated a reunited country to free and equal American citizenship. It has kept the channels of Inter state Commerce open for all and, through the National Banking System, the refunding of the Na tional Debt, Resumption of specie payments, the Cold Standard and the Emergency Currency Law, has sustained the life current of na tional integrity. As trustee of the National wealth it has investigated mineral regions, surveyed soils, developed water ways, including tile Panama Canal, irrigated deserts, conserved water sheds, and husbanded the public lands. Protecting American labor by regulating immigration and by taking at the Custom House, to pay American taxes, foreign-capi tal’s advantage from low wages, it lias preserved to American indus tries the home market of eighty millions of the world’s greatest consumers and so laid the surest basis for American competition in foreign markets. Cubing capital and labor, thus, in a common pros perity and common source of in creased reward, it has created op portunities, improved conditions of employment, brought about a higher standard of living, and more widespread distribution of wealth and well-being, and made expansion moral as well as material. Intrusted with insular posses sions, it bus brought them pence and progress, and provided for the extension and protection of Amer riean trade, for the National de fense, and for the honorable dis charge of tin* responsibilities of world greatness. 'Maintaining peace at home, with foreign na tions and among them, it lias given American rights and \meriean op portunities new meaning through* out the nation and throughout the world. Promising progress and pros perity, it lias been politically sin cere. It has never hail a candi date of a section, prejudice, or class, nor a platform of negation, scheme of repudiation, program of scuttle, or doctrine of despair. It has never lent itself to a demand for revolution, to be followed by reaction and retrogression, it lias stood firm for evolution by con stant, steady and enduring pro gress. Finding trusts, giant born, flourishing under supposed con flict of State and National law. the double prohibition of existence serving but to foster their devel opment, it has never, in an attempt to destroy trusts, withdrawn, in State or Nation, the protection of law from property, but has, through Executive investigation and resort to the courts, resolved the conflict which had silenced law and given trusts existence. It has never proposed to ad vance American workingmen and American institutions by banish ing American industries and build ing up those of other lands, and scorned to insult labor with an il lusory promise of immunity from law. Yet it passed the Pure Food Law and the Employers’ Liability Law, secured equal accommoda tions on radroads, aided agricul ture, created the Civil Service, es tablished Free Rural Mail Deliv ery, reduced foreign postage, and increased pensions. Continuing naturally marked.out progress, it will keep its pledges of Tariff re adjustment. Currency Reform and development of the Merchant Ma rine, and make the United States the financial centre as it has made it the industrial centre of the world. In the evolution by which party government has become the extra constitutional method of securing responsibility to the people, the Republican party has become their traditional representative and the Democratic party the organized aspiration of individuals for power without responsibility. Fairly tried, from 1893 to 1895, the two Democratic Houses and the Demo cratic President were a “wild team" and a helpless driver. Dem ocracy agitates local differences, Republicanism organizes the Na tional idea. In 1883 the people were committed to the cause of human liberty; the idea of “Li berty and Union” expanded for the first time into the reality of the American, nation. In 1879 money was committed to a specie basis; specie was at once, until ls93, no longer sought, anil government bonds went to a premium at the reduced rate of in terest In 1898 business men were again committed to confidence; be fore a single statute was enacted prosperity set in and in ten years bank deposits almost trebled a permanent gain which the recent panic, a “state of mind’’now com pletely dispelled, scarcely touched. In 1908 business was committed to fair methods; without compulsion violations largely coast'd. The Republican party, at each period, sounded the public'con science, felt the National pulse* framed its policies in response, and realized in law the dominant Am erican idea. I ts constructive past assures its constructive future. Jt is to-day as it always has been, “The Party fit to Govern.” The party of Statesmanship, it has been the training school of statesmen. Its policies have been forged in the heat of public dis cussion, ternaered in the delibera tion and shaped in the conflict of many trained minds, and drawn and dually wrought for the coun try’s welfare, I laminating its mem bers through principles, it assures unity in Government; its staunch est partisans have made the great est contributions to National pro gress. The roster of its leaders is the national roll of honor of public service. Republicanism stands to-day for progressive policies in safe hands. By solving the constructive prob lems of world power in the Inst two administrations, William H. Taft taught the world our capacity and us his own. In all constructive legislation for twenty years .Tames S. Sherman has been a leader. In the records of the Republican can didates as well as in the platform are written the story of the nation’s progress and the reliance of the future, A Democratic President or a Democratic House would turn back those pages; thereafter Bry auism would record “Destruction.” This the Republican Senate could not prevent. Under Taft and Sherman and a Republican Con gress the great progress of the past will be held and the greater progress of the future will be as sured. Nothing Left to Blush For A young man in want of $25 wrote to his uncle as follows: “Dear Uncle—If you could see how 1 blush for shame as I am writing, you would pity me. Why? Because 1 have to ask you for a few dollars, and do not know how to express myself. It is impossible for me to tell you. I prefer to die. I send you this by messenger, who will wait for an answer. Believe me, my dearest uncle, your most obedient and affectionate nephew.” ”P. S.—Overcome with remorse for what 1 have written, I have been running after the messenger in order to recover this letter, but I cannot catch him. Heaveu grant that something may stop him or that this letter may get lost.” The uncle was naturally touched but was equal to the emergency. He replied as follows: “My Dear Jack—Console your self and blush no more. Provi dence has heard your prayer. The messenger lost your letter. Your affectionate uncle.’’ — Judge Li brary. We think of Dyspepsia, Heartburn, and Indigestion as reai diseases, yet they are symptoms only of a certain specific Nerve sickness—nothing else. It was this fact that first correctly led Dr. Shoop in the creation of that now very popular Stomach Remedy—Dr. Shoop's Restorative. Going direct to the stomach nerves, alone brought that success and favor to Dr. Shoop and his Restorative.
