On Wednesday of last week a rather
bcrlous accident occurred about two
miles south of town. Henry Woodrlng
was riding a young colt on hU way to
Joe Wattons where ho was employed.
It was after night and an auto neared
him , the colt became frightened and
jumped throwing Henry right in the

The many friends of Louisa Paruhcn
were grieved when it was learned that
on hhursday June 18 she had parsed to
her long rest. Louise had been 111 for
inoro than a year and though her case
wiib serious all entertained a strong
hope of recovery. She was always so
bright and ohecrful and of a sunny
disposition. In work and similes the
was especially apt and energetic. It is
hard for us to comprehend why she
should bo taken. Their many friends
join in extending heartfelt sympathy
to the bereaved parents and brother.

a largo crowd of old and young took
an active purl. A nice dinner was pre
pared to which all did ample justice.

served during the day.
Early Thursday morning Mr. Gess-
ers coal sheds were discovered to be on
lire , Nothing could bo donu to check
the llames and twenty-live tons of coal
was burnc.il for Mr. Gesscr and thirty
thousand for the Central Grain Co. ,
which was stored In the ahed. An
empty box car was burned also. Spon-
trneous combustion caused the lire.
The coal took tire about two weeks
previous to the burning of the sheds ,
but was discovered in ilrno to get oil'
with small damage.

arrived Friday to attend the funeral of
his mother-in-law , but owing to the
bad roads was not in time. Mrs Hop
per has been with her mother at the

she and her father were walking up the
alley Friday afternoon and cut her left
foot pretty bad , A broken globe had
been thrown Into the driveway and

town , has had to make several mid
night trips to his bottom pasture this
spring and last Wednesday night ho
had to repeat the call , as the water
eumc out over the land , bnt not to the
extent that was figured on. A man
who ha ? stock on the bottoms has to bo
very watchful this season.

part of town , this week , for $050. Mr.
Freed just recently sold his refidence
property In Auburn. W D Bryant ,
who is running the elevator for Higgins -
gins of Auburn has been living in the
house just bought by Mr. F. Freedand

Messrs. Marion and Llmer Marts ,
with families , who left for Oklahoma
last week , returned to this place ere
they had been gone long. They got as
far a the Blue river south of Beatrice ,
ana there the trip came to an end , as
one of the bridges was 2one with the
hish water. The trip will probably be
abandoned for this sprlnc , as the water
has remained so high throughout the

home of her son. Joseph Wusrner on

until last winter when she suffered an

Last Wednesday evening while Otis
Splckler was returning from Barada
ho met with un accident Just a short
way out of Bariula as he was turning a
sharp corner bo came upon Henry
Woodrlng , who was on horsebacK and
who wu going toward Barada The
machine struck Woodring's horse and
knocked the rider to the ground , run
ning oycr him and breaking bis leg
just below the knee It was thought at
first that the leg was broken in two
places but it was only slightly frac
tured Spickler did not have the lights
on and the rider did not see him until
it was too Into to get out of thb way
Mrs. D. A. Walker died at her homo
In Stella , Tuesday morning , Juno 10 ,
1OS ! ) , at 0 o'clock , alter a long illness
caused from bronchial troubles. This
trouble become very serious after a
severe attack of the grip which came
on in the "inter. She has been bedfast
for nearly six 'iionths. The funeral
was preached by Rev. F. R. Shlrck in
the Lutheran church at 1 o'clock on
Wednesday afternoon The remains
were laid to rest in the Prospect ceme
tery. Ida Shrauger was born in Jef
ferson county , Penn. , June 1 , ISO I. At
the ago of two years she cumo to Ne
braska with her parents. The family
lived near Falls City for a while and
later cumo to this coaununlty. and the
father , J. B.Shrauger , well known In
this vicinity , now resldds near Faddam ,
Kansas. Miss Shruuger and Mr. Walk
er were united In marriage in January ,
1SS5. This happy union was blessed
with a son , Tory , now a young man.
Until about six years ago the family
had resided on the farm west of Stella
and that time moved to this place
where they have resided until death
came Tuesday. Mrs. Walker was very
devoted to her home and nothing was
left undone which tended to the happi
ness of her loved ones. Mrs. Walker
was a very devout church worker In
the Lutheran church of this place , but
her membership was with the Brethren
I'hitrch at Falls City. She was also a
member of the Degree of Honor frater
nity as a social member. During all
her Illness Mrs. Walker was very hope
ful and cheerful and until about the
last did she even give up that sbo wss
and must leave this land for realms
above.
N. S. Shrader and sons , Verne and
Guy , left this place last week for Vuma
county , Colorado , where they will take
homesteads. Ezra Stlneclpher of this
place Is also thinking of going if he
can find another who wishes to do like
wise.

Mr. John Martin of Barada opened
up his gallery Saturday , which he fit
ted up in a neat manner In the Shulen
berg building. Mr. Martin docs splen
did work at the former place and will
no doubt receive a good share of our
people's patronage.
Mrs. Chas. Shulenberg received the
sad news of an automobile accident ,
wherein her brother , Henry , had his
limb broken in two places. The acci
dent occurred one mile south of Bara
da. The auto was driven by a son of
Mr Sam Spickler.

Small receipts of live stock
began to arrive here last Thurs
day , and tbere was a pretty good
run on Friday. Rains west of
us late last week kept the rivers
here in a threatening state , and
above thedanger line. This has
held down the run today , which
amounts to 8000 cattle , 5500 hogs
and 3000 sheep. There was a
big break in cattle prices at all
the markets last week , account
of liberal supplies , especially ot
quarantine cattle. The daily
newspapers in the big cities all
over the country have exploited
the high price oi beef lately to
such an extent that consumption
has been greatly curtailed , which
together with the heavy runs ,
put buyers in a position to ham
mer the market successfully.
Prices are steady to 10 lower to
day , and whereas a top of SS.OO
or better would have been pos
sible a week ago for fancy steers ,
§ 7.00 would be about the limit
today. Sales of steers ranged
from So.25 to $0.90 here today.
Cows and heifers are also lower
today at $3.00 to $ fi.50. The hog
market opened five higher , but
improved up to the close , when
sales nveraged 15 higher , top
$5.90 , bulk $5.70 to $5.85. Qual
ity of sheep is not very good to
day , market slow , choice spring
lambs worth S6.50 , muttons S-1.00
to $5.25. The stock yards , with
the exception of the quarnntiue
cnttle yards , are in as good coudi-
tiou as before the flood , nnd all the
facilities for handling stock nre in
use. The quarantine cattle yards
will be in operation in a few days ,
if the rivers continue to fall. With
the exception of the Morris plant ,
all the packing houses are in oper
ation and will be able to produce
their usual output within a day or
two. Morris & Co. are buying
live slock for shipment to their
plants at other points. All the
railroads out of Kansas City are
open and outside order buyers are
in the market the same as before
the flood.
Just a Kick.
It seems now from the results
of approved appraisement that a
man's property is worth more than
he is willing to sell it for and that
the county commissioner's do not
agree with the market valuation ,
which is set by the owner. There
are some pieces of property around
town which have really and truly
tried to be sold for several hun
dreds of dollars less than the ap
praisement but the August body
of commissioners have decided
that the property owner is mif.
taken and that he should have
more money and the property is
taxed accordingly. Of course
this is alright from a taxable
standpoint bnt the property own
er doesn't understand it. Per
