Sheriff Fenton spent Sunday in Dawson with his mother , who is quite ill. Charlie Heck came up from St. Joseph Saturday for a visit with home folks. C. D. Nixon and wife of Au burn spent a portion of the week in this city. LOST : Many voices at the field meet on the high school 'grounds last Saturday. Harry Hughes of Podonia was . , visiting with his many friends in this city Sunday. Miss Mollic Moran of Kansas City is visiting her mother and sister in this city. The ' 'Merry Widow" has had its day. The fashion notes now say that small hats are the proper thing. Dr. J. L. Candy of Humboldt was a pleasant caller Tuesday and-renewed his faith in the Tri bune. D. W. Reid-came in the latter part of the week to spend a short time with his wifd who has been quite sick. Mrs. W. D. Easley and Mrs. E. F. Sharts spent a portion of the ' week visiting with a sister at Table Rock. Mrs. Henry Meyers left Tuesday - ' day night to join her husband ' and children in Los Angeles , Cal- , where they will reside. Prof. R. L. Hoff , superintend- cut of the Humboldt schools , " made this office a pleasant call while in the city Saturday. Newt Ilosford of Rule was the guest of friends in this city Sun day. August Meyer a real estate man of Auburn , was in this city Saturday. The electric theatres furnished plenty of amusement for the vis itors Saturday. Stipt. Oliver attended the com mencement exercises in Preston Friday evening. Will Bobst of. Humboldt was a pleasant caller at this office while in this city Monday. Fred Sebold was looking after insurance business in Johnson county during the week. Mrs. E. S. Norton of Humboldt is in the city the guest of her daughter , Mrs. Dr. Wolf. Mrs. J. J. Deyette and children of Nebraska Git } ' are guests at the home of L. Beardsley and wife. F. W. Cleveland and son were in St. Joe Wednesday looking for bargains to offer their customers here. here.Mr. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Easley of Kansas City , visited with rela tives and friends in this city this week. Mr. ana Mrs. Deles Graham of Dawson visited with their many friends in this city a portion of the past week. Jim Pickett and W. S. Leyda went to Lincoln Monday night as delegates to the K. of P. grand lodge in session in that city. There will be an interesting session at the Highlander lodge on Tuesday evening and all mem bers are earnestly requested to be present. Elton Sherdeman resumed his work on the road Monday , after a week spent in this city with hi wife at the home of her parents , J. M. Jellison and wife. Tom Poteet and Gus Ruegge spent the latter part of last week in St. Joe. They accompanied three carloads of cattle whicl they put on the market for Bei Poteet. Miss Alice Tittlow of Union Town , Pa. , but at present staying with her grandmother in Rule visited with the Poteet family in his city Saturday and attendee he field meet. Clyde Campbell of Old Mexico , was the guest of George Jennings and wife the later part of the week. From here he * went to Salem to visit for a few days with boyhood friends. The Misses Patzman went to Kansas City Friday to attend the graduating exercises of the Kan sas City Dental college , their brother being a member of the class. They returned home Sun day. Mrs. Elton Sherdeman who has been visiting her parents , Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Jellison , in this city for the past three weeks , left Tuesday for Friend , Neb. , where she will spend a short time with relatives. ' Elmer Heiser this week purch ased the Levi Zubrick property on north Morton street. This is a very desirable property. Mr. Zubrick and family will occupy the Maddox property lately va cated by Dr. Roberts. There will be no service at St. Thomas church next Sunday ev ening ron account of Rev. Neide deliyering the baccalaureate ser mon at the M. E. church on that evening ) in which service all churches will unite. Bert Windle who has just grad uated from a dental school in Kansas City , has decided to lo cate in this city , identifying him self | with Dr. Yutzy. Quite a number of our people attended the Easley funeral in Rule last Friday. Mr. Friend of the firm of Spra- gins & Friend , left Wednesday for a few week's yisit in Pennsyl vania. John Morehead and A. J. Weaver returned the first of the week from their trip through Mexico and Texas. The weather of the past two Sundays has tested a great many people's religion , and in most cases found it at a very low ebb. Mrs. J. G. Ranger returned Monday to her home in Salem , after several days visit in this city with her daughter , Mrs.'E.E' ' . Scott * . Many white llowers were seen , n the city Sunday , worn in mem ory of mothers. A very pretty custom which we hope will alway be observed. The store-room ot V. G. Lyford has been in the hands of the painter and paper-hanger this week and a decided improvement is the result. Mrs. J. A. Whitmore of Cedar Rapids , Iowa , returned to her home Wednesday , after a few days spent at the bedside of her brother , L. Schoenheit. Miss Marie Emerson returned to her home in Dawson , Sunday , after a few days visit in this city with Miss Ethel Cade. The lat ter accompanied her home and will spend a few days in Dawson. The sale by the Great Western Clothing Co. last Saturday was a success even beyond their expect ations , the crowd nearly swamp ing the extra lot of clerks they had employed. They wanted the trade and asked for it through the columns of the newspapers. In their report of the field meet at Salem , the Humboldt papers were very unjust in their remarks about the officials who presided over the event. Falls City won and that's all there is to it , and from what we can learn there was no "crookedness" or "rotten ness" displayed whatever , at least in our favor. Uncle Jack Scott from across the Kansas line was visiting with old friends in town Monday. This was Uncle Jack's first visit in sev eral months. He says since it costs Kansans $10 to fish in Ne braska he doesn't care to make the trip across the Nemaha , as the temptation is too great to try his luck in the old fishing holes , and he is liable to cast a line without the equivalent in his pocket. Sauiuelson was down from Lincoln a few days this week. Chas. Ilargraveand wife were Lincoln visitors a few days this week , Tom Hall of Verdon was look ing after business in this city Tuesday. A little hail fell on Monday morning , but no damage has been reported. June Abbatt of Omaha is the guest of his parents , Geo. A. Ab bott and wife. Mrs. Will Seism of Table Rock was the guest of Mrs. I. C. Maust during the week. W. H. Putnam attended the Bottler's Association which met at Fremont this week. Harry Jenne and wife were guests of Mr , and Mrs. Esburn Wheeler in Stella over Sunday. Mrs. Lee Kerr of Kansas City is visiting in this city at the home of Dr. W. II. Kerr and wife. v According to the dailies on Wednesday morning , a severe storm visited this city Tuesday- night. Mr , and Mrs. J. L. Slocum spent Sunday with the former's brother , George and family near Stella. George Cleveland and Chester Fisher returned Sunday from their business trip through Kansas and Oklahoma. Mrs. John Hossack was called to Verdon Sunday on account of the illness of her daughter , Mrs. Wm. Sloam Chas. Stumbo left Wed nesday tor her new home near Cheyenne Wells , Colo. , where she goes to join her husband ant sou who went some weeks ago , Mrs. Stumbo has been visiting in our city for the past two Months with her daughters Mrs Benj. Nicholson and Mrs. R. P Thomas. DAESCIINEII. Eliza M. Daeschner , wife o Henry Daeschner , died at he home near Preston , on Tuesday Mav 12 , 1908 , aged 51 years , 8 months and 1 day. Deceased had been a sufferer from heart trouble for some time , but was thought to be much better , and when her death came It was indeed a great shock , as she was 511 only a couple of hours. Mr. Daeschner's mother was buried about two weeks ago , and in this double affliction he has the sympathy of hosts of friends. The funeral was held at the home yesterday afternoon and was largely attended , as de ceased was well and favorably known , having been a resident of this county for many years. SCIIOENHEIT , L. Schoenheit died at his home in this city yesterday forenoon , after a long illness. Up to the time ot going to press we had not heard of the funeral arrange ments. Owing to the lateness of the hour and the crowded condition ot our paper we are unable to give our readers any particulars this week , but will do so in our next issue. Union Services. Hendricks gave an excellent report of the K. andL. of S. con vention which he attended as delegate at Nebraska City last week. A com. uiittee of three was appointed on resolutions of respect to be handed to Council 1312 regarding - ing the death of one of their members , James Cornell. Other important business was dis posed of during the evening. Something must be going to happen pretty soon. Several of our young men are paying rent on as many empty houses.
