The subject of this sketch is
one of the candidates for Mayor
and in the interest of a business
administration , the Tribune intends -
tends to support him.
Mr. Abbey is a native of Ohio
but came to Richardson county
away back in 1805 , and has
made his home with us ever
since. Though but a boy when
he reached here , he was never
theless a veteran of the greatest -
est war in history. In 1802 he
enlisted as a private in the 00th
Illinois infantry , lie was mus
tered out as a captain in Decem
ber , 1805.
We of the later generation
think of the soldiers as old men.
So the } ' are now , but in the days
of the great struggle they were
youngmany of them mere child-
rcn , the apotheosis of the youth
of America. 01 these Mr. Al >
bey was one and his record as
a soldier was an cnrncs of his
future conduct as a citizen.
Mr. Abbey has held many po
sitions of trust , and in each in
stance has been a faSthlul guar
dian of the rights of his people ,
lie was sheriff of Richardson
county in 1807.
lie was county superintendent t
in 1H09.
lie was state prison inspector
from 1870 to 1870. As such of
ficer lie helped build the peni
tentiary.
lie assisted in selling the pub
lic lands of the state.
As a member of the stale live
stock commission from 1887 to
IS5M ) , he gave splendid service
to the state.
For 10 years he was president
of the Richardson county agri
cultural society.
lie was president of the Falls
City fair association for two
years.
He is now secretary of the
Falls City school board.
In all his private and official
life the breath of scandal has
never reached him. lie posses
ses remarkable business ability ,
strong convictions and nulepen
dent courage.
In the next year Falls Oity
will spend $10,000 in public im.
provements. We need a strong ,
courageous , independent b usi-
ness man at the head of the ad
ministration. The Tribune be
lieves Mr. Abbey is the man and
for that reason we give him our
support.
Nebraska has the distinction of
being one of the first states to
declare itself squarely for Secre
tary Taft for nomination for
president. There's an old say
ing , "As Maine goes , so goes the
Union. " We mayapplv this rule
to Nebraska , and say , as Nebras
ka goes so goes the Union for a
Republican nominee for president.

1907 was the banner vcar for
Falls city in the building of side
walks. More sidewalks were
built last year than have ever
been built by the citv in any prev
ious year. It has cost the city
considerable money but it is
money well and wisely expended.
Bryan certainly did not mean
to be understood as saying that
he was in favor of instructed dele
gations to the Denver convention
when they are instructed for John
son , Tlarmon or Gray. It is only
when for Mr. W. J. Bryan that
the rule should be applied.

Now , that the lower house of
congress declared by a vote of
255 to 5 in favor of restoring the
motto "In God we trust" on gold
and silver coins , that one serious
question which has taken up so
much time of our statesmen has
been disposed of , and we may
look for other valuable services ,
This year the quadrennial valu
ation of the real estate of thi
state will be made by the asses
sors appointed for that purpose
The valuation fixed upon this
year will be the basis upon which
the real estate will be assessed
for the next four years , unless
there is some change made in the
law , and it is therefore very im
portant that a fair valuation be
fixed upon it. There is no other
way to distribute the burden ol c
taxation fairly among the tax
payers than by assessing all prop
erty at its real value. If one
man's property is assessed at les
than its real value because o
favoritism , and another man's a
more than its true value througl
ill will , then the burden of taxa
tion is not fairly distributed
The unfairness of it will not be
due to the law , which in theory
is nearly perfect , but it is due tc
the unfairness of the assessor who
for want of a sense of justice am'
fairness , permits himself to be a
slave to his likes and dislikes

realize the importance of it.
