The Bloodhounds Found the
Geese
Lewis Heeht , n German farmer
living uenr Bern , wns the owner
of 44 geese , nil fattened nnd ready
for the uppronehiiiK holidays.
These geese were especially fine
nnd he wnsciintiotis to keep Iheni
housed und locked up at night.
On n cold frosty mottling last
week , he proudly marched down ,
as usual , to inppect hit ) treasures
nnd turn them out , and imagine
his dismay when he opened the
door nnd found , lo , there were no
geese. This uood German farmer
was BO enraged that some one had
so quietly removed his geese that
he determined at once to find the
thief at any cost and bring him to
humiliaUou and justice. Rushing
to the telephone , he phoned to
Beatrice and ordered the blood
hounds to be brought down on
the early morning train. In his
mind's eyes he saw the thief be
hind the jail bars before the sun
should set. The dogs arrived at 8
o'clock. Thny immediately pro
ceeded to M . Ufcht'rt place. A
large cruwd gntneted to witness
the captuiv. Some difficulty was
had in the hounds getting the
scent , but finally , with a howl and
a bold dash , they started off. On
they rushed in hot pursuit of the
thief , the- crowd following. Their
course led on to the stieam near
Mr. Ilecht'H hou.se. On reaching
the water the dogs stopped and
the crowd stopped as abruptly as
the doirs , for behold , there were
forty-four of the finest geese in
Nemahn county and they were Mr.
Hecht's geese too , calmly floating
about in their accustomed Bwiui-
ming hole. Mr. Decht had for
gotten to shut them up the uight
before. Some one present said
that even the dogs laughed. Sen

Market Letter.
Kansas City Stock Yards ,
Dec. 10 , 1907. The cattle market
closed last week showing a decline
if 10 to 15c on nearly all classes ,
aused by an excessive supply at
Chicago again. The market open-
d the week steady on fed steers ,
he stuff and stackers and feeders
treng to 10 higher , but the high
trices of the latter curtailed the
letnand and they closed the week
0 to 15c from the high level first
part of the week. Top beef steers
old at $5.75 , $1 below top paid a
fear ago , bulk of steers $1.50 to
$5.60. Veal calves closed the week
irm , in some cases showing a gain
f 15 to 20c. Run of cattle today
s 11,000 head , market steady to
.0 higher on steers , cows and
leiferR strong to 10 higher , stack
ers and feeders firm , veal calves
steady. Top steers sold at $0.50 ,
paid for 37 head. Bulk of the
steers sell at $5.25 to $5.00 , short
ed steers at $4.50 to $5.50western
steers $3.90 to $4.35 , cows $2.75
o Si , heifers $3.25 to $5.15 , veal
calves $ -1 50 to § 0.50. Stackers
uid feeders are firm , stackers $3
o $4.25 , feeders $3.00 to $4.50.
jiclined in the supply of this
ilass are quite a number from the
ange country , stackers at $3.90 ,
feeders $1.25. The number of
cattle on feed in territory contigu
ous to KaiibMs City is short in
nany localities , while Chicago's
territory in full of cattle and it
would seem folly for shippers who
an reach this or any other west-
em market to compete with the
arge numbers centered tit Chica
go.
Light marketing the lirst three
days of hint week caused the hog
market to advance IU to 15c , but
liberal receipts the latter part of
the week wiped ou't part of the
gain. However , the market clos
ed the week lOc higher than the
close of previous week' Run to
day is 11,000 , market 10 to 20
lover , caused by an excessive sup.
ply of 00,000 at Chicago and a
lower market there. Top is $4.00 ,
bulk of sales $4.45 t o $4.55.
Light weights were hardest hit
today , heavy weights and packers
bringing best prices.
The supply of sheep last week
was exceedingly light , and comprised -
prised mostly of fed stock. In
spite of the light marketing , a
break in the market at Buffalo
svas reflected here , and market
closed the week 10 to 15 lower.
Run today is 8000. market 10 to
20 lower. Lambs range from
$5.75 to $0.10. yearlings § 4.75 U
$1.15 , wi'lherh $4.50 to $1 75. A.
few shipments of range stuff art
still coming , mostly feeding stock
lambs at 4.50 to $5 , sheep $3.25 to
$1
