Two Greeks Injured
Two Greeks tfere seriously hurt
last Friday evening when return
ing from work on the railroad.
They were helping to pump the
hand car when the handle broke ,
throwing them off and running
over them. One fellow had his
leg broken at the ankle , the bone
extending through the llesh. The
other received a broken back. Sev
eral men were thrown off the car
at the same tune and three others
were slightly hurt. One of the
gang walked on to the depot and
Becured help to bring the two injured -
jured men to their bunks in the
box cars Drs. Andrews and
Montgomery were called to attend
the men. who were sent to a hos
pital in Kansas City on the night
train. The men were in the em
ploy of Foreman Huber , who with
one gang had preceded them to
the depot. Stella Press.

"When Everybody Else Runs.
You Stand Still. "
The homely admonishment of
the German good wife to her
spouse is well known to most of
us : "When everybody else runs ,
John , you stand still ; and when
everybody else stands still , you
run. "
That advice , if judiciously
applied" paves the road to cue-
ce-s. The best and most suc
cessful financiers in the country
have been those who have put
in their bt-st "l.cks" in times of
depression. They simply take
advantage of the lack of confi
dence and good judgment in
about ninety per cent of their
fellow nien.
Why then , is not now a good
time to run and run last ? Many
a one who had intended making
a certain investment , to pur
chase , is halting to await devel-
oprnents. Anyone can halt and
wait , but it takes a seer to know
when to run.

In the face of existing condi
tions , is there any reason for a
farmer to be deterred in the
plans made a month auo ? In
fact is there not better reason
now for carrying them into exe.
cution ? Were the present finan
cial flurry based on conditions
that would indicate a perma
nence of the present tightness ,
it might be some different. But
such is not the case. The farm
er has in his cribs and bins an
abundance of good grain. In his
lots and pastures he has hogs
and cattle and horses. He is in
a condition to be prosperous.
Were there plenty of money in
circulation this produce would
have sold for more money than
before in years. Some gamblers
on Wall street caused a tight
ening up of money. In consequence
quence the prices on these pro.
ducts are somewhat depreciated.
But only in isolated cases is the
farmer compelled to sell. Jn
the majority of cases he has
plenty of money in the banks.
It is subject to checlr. Any man
in his community will take his
check because it is backed by a
deposit , and the banks , while
perhaps not desirous or able to
pay all of these deposits at
once , have securities that insure
the payment of all checks in a
reasonable length of time. Big
concerns and business men know
this and are willing to accept
the farmer's check for any
amount. The'y know the banks
are safe and sound.
However , in face of the fore
going1 , prices have depreciated
on many kinds of farm produce ,
especially livestock. This con-
jdition cannot become perma
nent. People must live and the i
supply is less than the demand.
Then why not "run' ' and buy
while prices are low ? The man
who feeds stock and needs corn
would do well to buy every
bushel he can get. The man
who intended to breed a certain i
number of mares or cows or
sows should not be deterred
in so doing. Go right ahead 1
and buy the sire and don't stint
on the quality. No doubt a bet
ter animal can be bought now
for less money. The buyer is
the winner if he buys. You
don't need to make payment in
the "long green. " Any sensible
breeder or dealer is willing to
take your check if it is bricked
by adepos.it. The requirements
are nothing more than thevever
were. The largest mail order
houses are anxious to take
checks in payment for pur
chases.
Now is the time for invest
ment. It is a safe bet that the
investor of today will get 25 per
cent more on hid money than the.
investor of six months hence.
Keep in mind that the basic con
ditions of permanent prosperity
are abroad in the corn belt.

Market Letter.
Kansas City Stock Yards ,
Dec. 2 , 1907. The cattle market
closed strong last week , all
classes having recovered from the
sympathetic weakness of Mon
day , when Chicago was over
loaded , and fed steers and stockers -
ers and feeders made a gain of
10 to 25 cents The same con
ditions rule today as on last
Monday , namely , a big supply
at Chicago , moderate here. 10-
000 head , but the result is dif
ferent , as in spite of a decline of
15 to 25 cents reported from
Chicago , the market here is
steady on fed steers , top $5.60 ,
while she stuff and stockers and
feeders are strong to 10 higher.
The territory surrounding
Chicago is full of cattle on feed ,
and that market is likely to have
bid Monday and Wednesday runs
for the next few months , and it
would seem folly for shippers
who can reach Kansas City or
any other Western market to
make the long trip to Chicago ,
where their cattle will have to
compete with the many thousands
from Chicago's own territory. A
fair number of steers are selling
here at $5.15 to $5.i > 0 today
short fed steers mainly at $1.50
to $5.25 , cows $2.75 to $4.00 ,
heifers $3.25 to $4.50 , top cows
$4.40 , best heifers today $5.10 ,
bulls $2.50 to $4.00 , best veals
$6.50 , heavy calves $3.50 to$4.50.
A fairly good number of range
stockers and feeders are still com
ing , prices $3.25 to $3.90 , coin-
man stock cattle at $3.00 or less ,
best feeders up to $4.50.
Decreased supply of hogs last
week , and general improvement
in trade conditions started the
market upward Tuesday , ' and
kept it going up all week , the
next advance for the week 54
cents per cwt. Run is 6000 to
day , market oj.ened 10 higher ,
closed 25 higher , and with the
full strength held to the finish.
Top today $4.85 , bulk of sales
$4.55 to $4.80 , heavy hogs in
the lead , pigs and light weights
$4.25 to $4.75. November re
eeipts show a small decrease
fiere as compared with a year
ago although there was a gain
up to the first of last week.
Present prices are $1.25 below
this time last year.
Heavy runs and a big decline
at Buffalo were the bad features
last week in the mutton market ,
but it was only felt slightly here ,
market 10 to 15 cents lower for
the week. Run is 5000 today ,
market steady to weak , fed
lambs worth $5.75 to $6.10 , best
yearlings $5.25 wethers $4.80 ,
ewes $4.50. Some feeding stocks
yet available ) lambs around $5.00
sheep $3.25 to $4.25. Prospects
favor early marketing of fed
stock.
