Is Alerger Backed by Standard ?
It is alleged that the Standard
Oil company is back of the
prospective merger of all the
print paper ami sulphite mills of
the middle west. The project
has advanced to the point of
appraising all the mills of Wis
consin.
Thirteen paper-mill appraisers
from New York have reached
Appleton , Wis. , and joined the
two appraisers who had been at
work for a week in the work of
setting a valuation on each of
the print mills and sulphite
plants in Wisconsin , Michigan
and Minnesota. The merger is
said to be practically certain , and
will involve millions of dollars.
John J. llanrahan , of New
York , as The Fourth Kstatc has
old , is promoting the merger.
Ic is a representative of Dean &
Shipley , and it was he who
ugiucercd the big candy trust
n California and the brewing
uerger in the eastern states
Mr. llanrahan 's oflicc is in the
Standard Oil building in New
York.
Paper men refuse to deny that
he mills arc likely to be sold out
right , which would allow the
Standard company to gain con-
rol. When the appraisers were
; it work at Mcnasha the owners
declared that they were -not pre
paring for affiliation with a
syndicate , but negotiating for
the sale of their mills outright.
It is positively asserted that
the merger will include uol
merely print mills but ground
wood pulp mills and concerns
manufacturing wrapping ant'
manila paper.
The print mills taken in will ,
it is said , have a capacity of T5 (
tons a day. As the pulp mills
can turn out only 5 ( > S tons o
ground wood a day it will bi
necessary to acquire additioua
plants.
George A. Whiting , of tin
Whiting P a p e r company
Menasha , is quoted as sayinj
that an effort is being made t
merge all plants in Wisconsin
Michigan and Minnesota , whos
products are made from th
component parts of wood. Fret :

DAYS OF WHALING GONE.
"Xevvjotiinlland's coastwise whale
islicry , of which so much was ex-
icctcd , has utterly i'olIapBcd , " writes
\iisul Cornelius at St. Johns.
"Started about ten years ago , with
iioilcm steamers and equipment , the
] rst operators did HO well that from
a single ship it grew to 17. The re-
nit was the speedy killing out of
he herds of gigantic mammals ,
1,500 of which were destroyed in a
ingle year. Gradually , however ,
he catch fell oil' , and within the
) nst year six or seven of the stcam-
M'.s have been sold for similar work
on the Hritish Columbia and Jap-
iiieso coasts , while the companies
owning Ihoni have gone into liquida-

s not expected that there will ho
norc than seven or eight whalers
operating in all. ' '

the snow and human bodies emit
this vapor , which changes into tiny
icy particles which till the air and
make a light uoit-e like the rustle of
