Al Speer is back at his duties in Samuel Wahl's this week after a week's vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Callison , of Stella , are visiting his sister Mrs. Dr. Houston. Grandma Leitzke who fell and broke her arm last week is report ed as doing very nicely. Miss Florence Boose has been j > eriously ill for about a week but at this time is a trifle better. Guy Hutchings , wife and baby of Stella were the guests of Mr. andMrs. Harry Jenneoyer Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Kneller and two daughters of Syracuse , N. Y.are visiting Chas. Leitzke and family , Mr. and Mrs. Will Uhlig and children returned Sunday from their outing spent at the Mis souri lakes. The National hotel makes a specialty of their Sunday dinners. They serye at 5 p. m. They are par excellent- Al Speer and wife are enter taining Mr Speer's mother and sister , Mrs. A. LSpeer and Miss ft f - * 11 Dora Speer of Superior this week. Mr. Rathburn of Lincoln vis ited his sister , Mrs. Dr. Miner , a few days the latter part of last week , returning to Lincoln Mon day. Mr. Bruno Hansen left Monday for Omaha after spending Sun day with Dr. and Mrs. Kerr. Mrs. Hansen will remain here a week. Miss Dorothea White will have for her guest next week Miss Bijou Meisenheiraer of Hiawatha who will visit her during chau tauqua. Will Halderman of the Journal force was the guest of Miss Edna Shaffer north of Muddy over Sunday the floods came and he hasn't come back yet. P. S. Heacock Son are com pleting extensive improvements this week. The are building a number of large coal sheds near the B. & M. depot for storage purposes. All trains were off Monday and Tuesday owing to the wash outs along the line and the mail was very irregular. Several trains from the west were over twelve hours late. Wess Nedrow and family were in town several days the fitst of the week at the home of Mrs. Nedrow's parents. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stump. They could not cross the Muddy to their home because of the flood. Ed May was down from Salem Friday. Chas. Hern was over from Re serve to spend Sunday. Val lacas and embroideries at Shield's Variety store. Will Winterbottom returned on Friday from a short trip to Ham burg , la. D. W. Easley was up from Kansas City the latter part of last week. Miss Gibson of Fremont , Neb. , is the guest of Mrs. Dr. Miner this week. Dowty Watson of Reserve visi ted his sister , Mrs. Jesse Sears , over Sunday. Mrs. A. Graham was quite ill several days last week but has again recovered. A. Graham left Friday night for Spokane , Wash. , and will be absent about two weeks. Ray Graham was on the sick list the latter part of the week , threatened with malaria. W. II. Wolff returned Friday from Beatrice where he went to attend the races for a few days. Dr. Jennie Callfas of Omaha was in our city over Sunday in the interest of the Woodman Circle. Nelson Korner of Lincoln was here on a visit to his brother , Wilson Korner , the latter part of last week. Mrs. W. b. Korner returned Friday from her outing at the Missouri Lakes with Mr. and Mrs. Morrow. Mrs. Hughes , with her baby came up from St. Joseph Thurs day to visit her sister , Mrs. Grant Windle. Mrs. John Hutchings of Council Bluffs is in the city visiting old friends. She made the Tribune a very pleasant call , Mr. Yates of Omaha was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Win. Me Pherson while in the city in the interest of the W. O. W. Sunday. The Misses Beach ot Lincoln ) who were guests of Mrs. Spence for a short visit last week , went to Kansas City Friday afternoon. Clyde Thacker drove up from Preston Saturday morning to take the train here for Pawnee City where he spent Sunday with re latives. Ed Fisher came up from Leaven worth to spend Sunday with his wife who is visiting at the home of her father , W. E- Dorrington. Mrs. Fletcher Brown of Still- water , Okl. , formerly a resident of this city , visited Mrs. W. L- White a few days this week on her way to Omaha. Miss Nellie Weaver was down from Verdon the last of last week , shopping here. She left this week on an extended trip through Colorado and Idaho. William Cade is at home from Osborne , Kans. , for a visit of ten days. He is interested in u mill at that place , also having other business interests there. Basil Boyle of St. Louis spent a few days here the last of the week visiting his mother , Mrs. Dr. Yutssy and his brother , Walter , who was down from Omaha. Mas. Chas. Dockhorn of Oskalusa , Kansas is visiting her sister Mrs , Grant Windle. Mrs. Dockhorn is just recovering from a severe attact of inflametarv rheumatism. Mr. and Mrs. Elton Sherdeman went to Sycamore Springs Thurs day where they will remain some time. Mrs. Sherdeman will take treatment while there , hoping to regain her health and strength. H. Wuethrich of Dalhart , Texas was in our city the last of last week in the interest of tne Iowa Land Company who are selling Texas-Panhandle land for the Rock Island R. R. Miss Helen Brebeck returned Monday from a week's visit with Omaha friends. Mrs. Samuel Lichty has for her guest her sister Mrs. Cable of Waterloo , Iowa. Mrs. Fred Farington went to St. Joe Sunday morning where she will visit relatives a couple of weeks. Mr. and Mrs. George Slocum of Stella were in the city over Sunday , guests of the family of J. L. Slocum. Miss Hattie Biting who has been quite ill for the past two weeks is improving. She is now able to be out some. Mrs. John A. Crook and child ren came home Tuesday from a visit of several weeks with her mother in Coin , la. Herbert Hedges left Monday for his run as mail clerk between Omaha and Denver after a short vacation here with his famih . John Morehcad , Arthur Weaver and John Tijjhe left Friday night on a business trip to Seattle ; they will be gone about two weeks. Miss Ethel Hutchins returned Saturday from a several months trip in California. She is looking well aid is greatly improved in health. Fred Farrington left Sunday for Oklahoma where he expects to join Art Wing who started last week with team and wagon over land. He expects to locate Art on a farm. W. II. Bock , B. & M. , agent at Auburn was in town Thursday night. lie came down to meet his daughter who was on her way from Indian Territory to visit her parents in Auburn. Ralph Jcnne has accepted a fine position with the Sanderson Shoe Co. , at Lincoln. This is the best shoe house in the city and in securing Ralph they have been fortunate in securing a most compitent salesman. Mrs. Bell Weaver of Los Angeles is visiting the famjly of her brother , G. J. Crook and other friends in this vicinity. After chautauqua she will go to Pennsylvania to visit relatives and also visit the Jamestown exposition. It did us good to hear so many people speak of the fine band music last Sunday at the W. O. W. exercises. We heard it said often , "Wouldn't it be fine to have band concerts of sacred music Sunday afternoons. " Now wouldn't it ? Can't we have them ? Miss Nellie Patnaude of Chicago has been visiting Miss Wittrock. While here these ladies secured the Towle build ing formerly occupied by the Blakeney millinery store and will open a high class millinery store in it about August 1st. Miss Patnaude has gone to Chicago where she will buy the entire new stock. The rural mail carriers went out on their routs Wednesday morning. Mr. Stumbo was un able to get across the Nemaha and returned to town. The other carriers covered mobt of their routs with more or less uif- ficuly but were very late in get- ing in. They found many bridges washed out and some roads Were abandoned entirely. , W. II. Bousfield was down from j Auburn Monday. I Roy Dunn of Barada was in | town last Friday. Frank Snethen was a Hum- boldt visitor in our city Satur day. Pearle Seaman of Hiawatha was in our city the first of the week. Millinery apprentices wanted. Apply at Miss A. Mesdames Saylors and Lough- ridge of Shubcrt were in town between trains last Monday. Mrs. Belle Mulligan returned the latter part ot last week from a business trip to Clay Center , Neb. Neb.E. E. W. Obenland of Cancordia , Kans. , was in the city over Sun day , the guest of Miss Carroll Pryor. John Tighc came down from Dawson Friday to take the Port land train from here to Seattle Friday night. Mrs. N. VanWinklc and daugh ter , Grace , left Tuesday for a few days visit with Pawnee City rela tives and friends. Fred Xorn made us a call one day this week and showed his appreciation of this family neces sity by a renewal. Edwin II. Banks ol Chicago is spending his two weeks vacation here with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Banks. Mr. Chas. Banks of Decatur , 111. , arrived Sunday for a two weeks visit with his wife and daughter in this city. Mrs. Bert Reavis and daughter , Mary , went to Excelsior Springs Friday to join Mr. Reavis who has been there for a couple of weeks. Hal Burris and his mother , Mrs. Kate Burris came back from Denver Sunday having decided to make their home here for the present. Win. Cade says he must have the good things with him when he goes back to Kansas so he re newed his subscription to this family necessity for his brother W. R. Oscar Maddox and sons , Wilson and Fred , left Thursday night for Missttla , Mont. , where Mr. Maddox has a good position with the Missoula Mercantile Co. The } * expect to make that place their future home. Mrs. Hogrefe of Cedercdgc , Colo-i was in our city for a few hours between trains Wednesday. She was on her way to Stella with the body of her mother , Mrs. Mains , who died in Coder- edge last Saturday and was brought Iback to Stella , the old home , for burial. Mrs. Hogrcfc was accompanied by her bother and wife , Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Mains , of Crete , Neb. , and her cousin. Mr. Murphy , ot Table Rock. Being friends of Mr. and Mrs. Speuce the } ' were their guests during their stay here. Mrs. Mattie Stoughtcn is having a fine new cement walk put down along her property on Lane street. Frank Wylie came in from Millner , Wy. , Tuesday night for visit with his mother and old friends here. J. W. Whitaker went to Kansas City last Friday where he has spent the week looking after business matters. F. C. Reavis went to Nekraska City the first of the week and detained several days because was of the high waters. Bert Wright came up from Kansas City to spend Sunday with his wife who is visiting her mother , Mrs. Stoughton. Mrs. Ilarbaugh and daughter , and Miss Fitswilliams of St. Louis are the guests of Mrs. J. II. and Mrs. Stephen Miles. Mr. and Mrs. John Mosiman returned Friday of last week from a visit to their daughter , Mrs. Fred Johnson of Superior. Grandma Down is at home after an extended visit with her daughter in Glenwood , la. , where she went hoping to benefit her health. Mr. William Jennings of David City is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McCormick having arrived here last Satur day evening. Fred Sebold and Adolph Brachahn made a business trip to Salem Wednesday going up in a boat on the Nemaha. The trip was fine they say. Ed Burris and wife are visiting in Grand Island and will arrive in this city in a short time. They were not pleased with Salt Lake City and will not locate there. The school board is having a fine new cement walk laid on the east side or the Central school building. This encloses the en tire half block in fine walks. T. J. Whitaker is having new cement walks laid along his property just east of the Central school , also.
