: THE FALLS CITY TRIBUNE
When Mother Is Sick.
" \Vhat \ a doleful place the house
is when mother is sick. When
father or any of the children are
} ] 1 things niDve along as smoothly
as ever. The house is cheerful ,
the meals are ready , the necessary
juiet is maintained without
! oem or friction , because mother
: at the helm. But when , after
struggling to keep out of bed for
clays before she gives in , mother
finally takes to her bed the whole
family stands aghast. The cap-
tiin ; is not there. No one known
low to do any tiling. The fires
eke down , the children's faces are
unwashed , the school books cannot -
not be. found , the lamps are
smoked , dishes unwashed , beds
unmade , the curtains left pulled
down. Father struggles with
the meals , doing his sacred best
to keep things moving. But for
nest part father and the girls
stand huddled , . frightened and
helpless * around mother's bed ;
while the boys , none the less
worried but more helpless , run
for comfort to the cheerfulv -
reosphi're of a neighbor , where
some other mother is holding the
tiller. At last the doctor comes
and says mother is very sick and
must stay in bed a month. But
in three days , mother sees the
very roof falling about her head
and she staggers up. The very
necessity of her piloting the ship
keeps her going , and in straightening -
ening out the tangled mass of
household knots , her illness is
forgotten , and mother again is'
well. Sabetha Herald.

An American once asked Pat
to show him the largest hotel Ire
land could boast of. Pat took
him to the largest hotel he knew.
"Oh ! " exclaimed the American ,
"this hotel would sit in one cor
ner of some of the hotels in New
York. "
Just as they were at the door
coining out , they saw two hor.ses
drawing a large piuce of iron ,
about 20 feet long. ' 'What is
that for1' abked the American.
"Oh ! " exclaimed Pat , "we're
building a new hotel in the next
street , a n d that's the stove
poker. " Comment ,
Editors.
"Editors" , says the handsome
man who owns and operates the
Lawrence Journal , "make us
tired. " That is a strange coin
cidcnce ; they make us tired too.
We sometimes think that if il
wasn't for editors and editin
this 'vould be a pretty fair
scrt of a world. But editors
are for ever taking their crow
bars and raising the devil and
the devil is always to pay when
he gets started , and often there
being no pitch hot the devil un.
paid goes up and clown the
world seeking whom he may de
vour. All the trouble in this
world'is started byeditors. And
what do they get out of it nothing -
thing but board and clothes and
the support of their humiliated
and discredited families. Why
are editors any way ? What
everlastingly aud eternally is
the use ? The editor riseth in
the morning lull of high hopes
and beautiful and bulging ideas ,
and he goeth to bed full of una
vailing regrets and typographi
cal errors. lie paceth up to
the dragon ot evil , and soaketh
it , when lo. it champeth and
snorts and he is not ! lie mere
ly monkeyeth with the buzx saw
of popular sentiment and picke-
th himself up in a sack and tot
eth himself to the scrap heap.
lie rejoiceth in his decenc } ' and
patteth himself on the back ,
yea he annointeth himself with
unction and clmrnelh himself on
the belly and pointeth with
pride. But behold his alibi
crumblcth : his tin front krink-
leth ; his starch melteth as wax.
and when the report on com
mittee on conduct and behavior
cometli , the editor , even the
editor of great pride , appeareth
before men as the two spot from
the other deck. This also is
vanity. You bet the editor
makes us tired. If it wasn't
for the editor we would be a
happ3r people. But as it is we
sometimes wonder why we
shouldn't take a hop , skip and
a jump and go sailing into Ins-
tory without waiting for the
tooth of time to gnaw at our
vitals. The editor is a bad lot.
There should be a law against
them. There should be an open
season on editors so that they
mi girt be killed from , New
Years to Christmas. For ed
itors certainly make us tired.
