Doty of South Oma ha is visiting with her parents Joe McCormick and wife- Dorothy White was the guest of Hiawatha friends this week , leaving here Wednesday. Messers. R. Shell- and II. Rieger of Preston were business visitors in this city Monday. Mrs. Wm. Yoder and daughter Alice left Sunday for an extend ed visit with relatives in Ohio. Wm. McPherson , wife and daughter , came up from Preston Saturday night for a brief visit. Francis Beaulieu and wife of Sabetha were here Monday to at tend the funeral of the late- John Bauer. Mrs. Lawrence and sister , Mrs. Petrie left Tuesday afternoon for a visit with relatives at Eailey- ville , Kansas. _ _ , _ _ _ Mrs. E. F. Sharts returned Tuesday from a three days visit with her sister Mrs. Alida Butler at Table Rock. Anna Centner , a sales lady at Lyford's Store , is enjoying her summer vacation , leaving Mon day for Omaha. Prater , returned the latter part of the past week to her home in Pheps , Mo. Mrs. C. T. Burchard had some of the finest gooseberries this week that we ever saw. She brought them home from Atchison - son , where she has been visiting. Herman Seibenheicher a son- in-law , and his wife and Hans Bauer and wife of Reynolds Ne braska attended the funeral of John Bauer north of town Mon day. Mrs. Arthur Brier and small son of Lincoln were the guests of Mrs. Lewis McPherson the past week. Mr. Brier came down Friday and accompanied them home. Milton Bohrer returned Thurs day to Oberlin , Kansas after spending a few days in this city. He brought his nephew Roy a .fine spotted dog of which he is justly proud. Mrs. H. C. Yutxy and children of Waseca , Minn. , are guests ai the home of Dr. Yutzy and wife. H. C. Yutzy has been promoted from station agent to traveling freight agent for the M. & St Louis , with headquarters at Minneapolis. His many friends here will be pleased to learn o the success he has attained. Jennie Leister was on the sick- list this week. Dr. Houston went to Verdon Saturday morning , where he performed an operation on Mrs. Clifford Benedict. Fred Lehnherr was down from Humboldt , Saturday night look ing after business interests and talking to old friends. Mrs. Geo. Prater and daugh ters Chloe and Haxel. are visit ing with Hiawatha friends and attending the Street Fair. Mrs. Lightfoot , nee Bertha Houston , and two children of Springfield , Mo. , have been visit ing with her sister Mrs. Lewis McPherson. Mrs. Ada Wells is having ex tensive improvements made in her personal property on the corner of Lane and Third street. Burton Sperry has the contract for same. Crush Bros , have just received a fine new theshing outfit , of the Avery make. It has an S horse power engine , a large separator and is a daisy in every respect. These boys always get the best on the market. John Wiltse has been chosen to deliver the Fourth of July oration tion at the celebration to be held just north of the Fort Hax.el school house. We are sure the committee have made no mistake when they secured Mr. Wiltse for the address. Harry McConnell was down from Humboldt the first of the week and has closed a deal with the Falls City Music Co. , for a new Hamilton piano of the fam ous Baldwin make. This enter prising firm are mounting to the top of the ladder in their busi ness career. Willard Sears , Harry Foehling- er and Clarence Heck went to Pawnee City last Friday where they played with the Humboldt base ball team against Pawnee City nine. The rain somewhat hindered the progress of the game but never-the-less it was a good one. Score 6 to 5 in favor of Pawnee City. y 1 I Ed. May returned to Salciu Monday noon. Mrs. Sarah Nicholson returned the latter part of the past week from a visit with her mother at Craig , Mo. W. W. Wertz , a prominent stock and grain man of Salem , was a pleasant caller at this office Saturday. Harry Foehlinger went to Stella last Sunday where he was the guest of Zetta Camblin. Xetta is just recovering from a severe illness. II. L. Rummel of Nevada is visiting with his sister Mrs. Spencer. He left Tuesday , ac companied by Mrs. Spencer , Edna and little Harold , for Green Leaf Kansas. Mrs. W. Rieger came up from Preston Monday noon. R. C. Lula Gray of Craig , Mo. , is visiting at the home of Mrs. J. UcWald. Clara Gagnon and Mary Sulli van have returned from a visit with Rule friends. Shildncck of Salem was a business visitor here Tuesday. He and Allan May were scatter ing literature concerning the Salem Cliautauqua. Mrs. Fry living on Chase street who was so unfortunate as to fall down a cellar way about two weeks ago and sustaining two broken wrists is doing nicely. The National hotel is certainly well equipped with dining room girls as four have been secured from the Paddock House at Be atrice , the same arriving Mon day. day.C. C. II. Marion is treating his recently purchased home to a coat of paint. When Colonel gets through with it , it will be one of the coxiest homes in this city. M. II. Marble was down from Table Rock Tuesday and took the M. P. for Broad head , Wis consin where he will visit with relatives , and attend the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of that city. The real-estate office"of Whit- aker Bros , has been undergoing many changes. A 3500 pound Victor patent safe has been in stalled , which is large enough to hold a great amount of policies and papers of their patrons. The office partition has been moved east about two feet and a new bronxe lattice work has been add ed , making the office among the most up-to-date affairs. Frank Caff ray of Parkvillc col lege is visiting at the home of John Wilson. Irene Wachtel left Wednesday for a few weeks visit with rela tives at Beatrice. Messrs. Slagle and Reed were M. P. passengers for Strauss- ville Monday morning. Elmer DeJarnett came up from Atchison , Tuesday eve and spent Wednesday with his family here. Willard Sears and Clarence Heck went to Ilumboldt to play ball at the game there Wednes day. Mrs. Sam Stewart came up from Reserve the first of the week and spent a day at the home of her parents. The Werner orchestra furnish ed music for the club dance and banquet given by the young men's club at Stella last Friday evening. Una Snidow has been elected as primary teacher of the Stella school at a salary of $42.50. This is an excellent position and was secured through her merit as an instructor. Prof. Millican , of California will conduct services at Silver Creek church , four miles north of this city , Sunday July 1st at 11 a. m. He is a verv popular speaker , and well worth hearing. The quartette will furnish ex cellent music. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Steele Cemetery Association will meet Tuesday afternoon , July 3rd at the home of MrsDr. . Kell er. Every member is urged to be present as a pleasant and pro fitable meeting is anticipated. We recently saw the plan for the Carnegie Library to be con structed at Hiawatha soon. Architect M. N. Bair drew them up and they will make an elegant structure being complete in cverv detail Hiawatha was fortunate in securing the service of Mr. Bair. j Chas. M. Wilson did himselt proud last week and you may now have > our order delivered by lightning express. All this was caused by the purchase of a new horse , a brand new spick-and- span wagon and a new set of harness. The n e w delivery wagon is a prettsred. .
