We wonder if Minden is not the only town in the state that is out of debt with $500 to the good ? Those who wish to attend the htatc conventions this full will be permitted to go in the childrcns class half fair. The pace set in this twentieth century is so fast that we often forget ourselves and trample up on the rights and privileges of others. Advocates of a "noiseless Fourth" must have clustered close to this community. We have not heard the event mentioned on our streets. Our prisons are filled with "get rich quick" promoters * while the Standard Oil and in surance frauds .ire enjoying a season in lOurope. It appears to make a vast difference in this country whose lingers are tarred. A county seat town without a good band is certainly behind the times. With the talent at hand Kails City could soon have an organization of that kind that all would be proud of and certainly would be a drawing card. The New York "Four Hun dred" have decided that it is the proper thing to erect a monument ment to Carl Schunc. The re mainder of this broad union will not be prohibited from furnish ing the bulk of the money to complete their ideal. The committee has been called to meet at Table Mock for the purpose of fixing a date and nam ing a place for holding the judic ial convention. Judge Raper will probably be before the people of this district for election to fill vacancy , as he is now holding by appointment. Collier's Weekly is looking for the proper man to send to Europe for the purpose ot interviewing Col. Bryan. An offer of S200C has been declined by William Allen White for this enviable position. Hut a few short months and these interviews with this most estimable gentleman wil be away below par. The human family appears tc have fallen heir to a trait ol character that is not commend able to say the least. A weal- brother may vary from the straght and narrow way , am every tongue in the community will start to wag. By the tinu half a dozen brothers who hav < never sinned at least to the ex tent that the public eye \va : turned their way this mine offence against society has growi to excel the unpardonable sin. Exchanged Suit Cases. Martha and Miranda Meyer were waiting in the St Josepl union station last Friday for train to this city. A man cam in and deposited a grip near on of theirs and but little attentio was given to his coming or goin However when the young ladie started for their train they di ; covered that their suit case ha been taken by the man and hi left in its stead. They immcd ately reported their loss to tli St Joseph police , as the stole case contained several diamon rings , a gold watch and expensh wearing appearal. The grip the considerate ma left , contained a jumper and pa of overalls. Upon arriving in this city tl girls reported the loss to chief-o police , Lou Beasley at this end < the line , but at this writing i news has been received of the lo property. Remember we pay 3 per cent interest on time CERTIFICATES OF DEPOSIT and 4 per cent on Children's accounts. Palls City State Bank. Break at Water Works. About ( ) :30 : o'clock Monday the water works whistle commenced blowing , causing several surmis es as to what was wrong. It didn't take one any great length of time to ascertain that the water supply had been cut off. This was caused by a break in the water main where it goes through the wall , caused by the settling of the ground at that point. This together with the strain on the pipes and the pres sure of the water broke the coup ling of the six inch main where it leads into an eight inch main from the pumping house. The place was probably crack ed , as it had been leaking a trille but Monday morning it broke with a noise loud enough to be heard by the engineer inside. It was necessary to cut down through eight feet of dirt tc make repairs while the watci had to be dipped out which kept constantly running in. Mayoi Barrett , Dennis McCarthy and Henry Lapp worked on the re- airs and at 4:15 the whistle lew again , this time to announce he fact that the water supplj vas again turned on. The watei vas riled up at first but gnul tally become clear. The three amed gentlemen worked like Turks all day and deserve tin : * lad hand for their prompt assist uce. Second Anniversary. Two years ago this coinitu unday , Rev. Griffin preachet lis first sermon as pastor of tin resbyterian church of this city During these two years he ha ; vorkcd unceasingly for t h i luirch , both in and out of tin old , and has done a great dea owards the strengthening ot it lower. Untiringly he has se orth the needs of a new churcl and success seems to be close a land for the new structure , am ve are sure the congregatioi eel indebted to Rev. Griflin Plie occasion of the aniiiversar vill be fittingly observed at th norning service , and there shoul a full attendance of the con gregation. We hope Rev. Griffi will celebrate many more sue ! events with us. Narrow Escape. Joe Forney was the victim of recent adventure which he wi not soon forget. Seeing som beauties of ripe cherries on som high branches he thought h could use them to good advai tage. He dumb the tree and i trying to turn around slipped hi hold and fell , one foot catchin in a fork of the tree in such manner that he could neitlu loosen it or pull himself up in tl tree. Fortunately a man can along in a few seconds and r lieved him from his uncomfor able position. FOR SAI.K : Two good Shor horn bulls , yearlings past , 01 red and one roan.
