Sam Edgar seems to have brought his Barada lid down with him. So far it has stayed on remarkably well. Otto Porr of Speiser precinct has completed his scedules as as sessor and made his returns to assessor Jorn Saturday. Profs. Pillsbury and Tobie ac tompanied our local High School delegation to the athletic contest held in Humboldt last Saturday. Mrs. John Holland joined her busband in Witchita Tuesday. Mr. Holland has been selected captain of the Witchita ball learn. Gertrude Lyford and Ruth Hea- cock were among the High school students in attendance at the Field meet in Humboldt last Sat urday. If the saloons are not opened pretty soon we will have to vote those water bonds. The last : > week has been a severe and unusual t usual strain on the water supply. A little daughter was born to 'Jrs. Nelle Hagensick , nee Nelle Abbey , at her home in Iowa Palls last Sunday morning. All parties are reported as progress ing nicely. We know of one farmer who . tested his seed corn while an other one did not. The farms tie adjoining and we are going to watch the result to see who gets flic bigger crop. What does it profit a man to dig the pestiferous dandelion out f his lawn when his neighbor cultivates a large seed crop to be distributed over the grass with the first favorable wind. Cut em out. Henry Zoeller and Herman Wolf were in town Saturday completing arrangements for the incoming of the Preston tele phone company. These gentle men say that they will commence vork on the construction at once. M. W. Bair returned Friday from a few days visit with rela tives in northern Iowa. We are sorry our friend has not as yet recovered his eyesight. Mrs. Ilaner and Margaret left Sunday afternoon for Sabetha. Mrs. Ilaner having received the sad news of the death of her sister. The , saloons have been closed in Verdon a little over a week end there has been at least half a car of boose shipped by express to the thirsty ones up there with in that time. It was amusing to watch some of the fanners go to the saloon doors Saturday , catch the latch gently , look in and then shake the door viciously and finally turn away with a look of mingl ed embarrassment , disgust and despair. Thos. Glines came up from Hiawatha last Sunda } * in order tc see that the Colts did their best. It made Tommy put on that "happy" smile when he saw how easy the contest was for the home boys. Geo. W. Segrist , representing the Iowa Homestead was looking after business affairs in the Soutli Platte county and part of North ern Kansas territory. Mr. Se- grist was formerly with the Ne braska Farmer , but the Home stead knows a good thing when they see it , consequently they se cured the services of and extreme ly able and competent worker. Ethel Cade was on the sick list this week. G. W. Inskeep left Sunday evening for Troy , Kansas. Will Kentner was up from Atchison during the week. Vera Lord has returned from a visit with friends in Salem. Postmaster G. J. Crook spent a few days in Omaha this week. Myrtle Pittock is now home having completed her term of school at Barada. Steve Mower and Frank Neil- Bel attended the field day meet in Humboldt last Saturday. A. Xook of Verdon has our thanks for a call here during his visit in this city last Friday. Nolle Hanna is home after en joying a very successful term of school , as teacher in district 58. Ed Bell went to Dawson where he will have charge of the Cummings - mings drug store for a few days this week. Rieger & Sebold's next excur sion to the Arkansas valley will be May 15th. Arrange to make the trip. Dr. W. II. Kerr left Sunday for Norfolk where he will spend several days with his daughter Mrs. Hansen. W. II. Pyle of Champion , Neb. , remembered this weekly edition by sending us a financial greet ing during the week. Hill , the graduat ing class of the Shubert higl school were down Saturday to have the class photo taken Prof. McDonald and wife accom panied them. Mrs. Frank Seal , of Willis Kansas , came up last week am spent seyeral days visiting wit ! Mf * dames H. I. Hunt and Frank Wolfe of this city. Mr. Sea worked for the M. P. railroai company' here for several years as Aerator. Geo. Jennings and wife spent Sunday in Salem. Mrs. Lydia Sperrv is on the sick list this week. \V. A. Alexander came down 'rom Dawson Monday. Harvey Foehlingcr was a Ilum- joldt visitor Saturday. C. F. Reavis was an Omaha visitor during the week. Ralph Lewis went to Hum- joldt the past Saturday. Thomas Naylor and family will move to Omaha soon. Agnes Moran visited in Ilum- boldt the first of the week. Wes Hummel of Dawson was a visitor here during the week. W. S. Hubbard of Liberty , Ne braska , was in this city Wednes day. Roy Heacock was a B. & M. passenger Wednesday for Lin coln. George Ilossack and Ed Ilaner were in Humboldt on Saturday afternoon. Our genial friend Geo. Smith was down from Dawson the past Wednesday. Edward Letson of Horton was in town on business matters Mon day and Tuesday. Mildred Holland is visiting with her sister , Mrs. Ray De- Putron in Lincoln. The weather is still favorable to the coal man , the ice man will have his innings later. Frank Shubert was down from the town that bears his name , Monday , smiling on his numer ous Falls City friends. Let us push for a factory of some kind wooden nutmeg or any old thing that will sell on the market and open a channel for labor. What is to prevent Falls City from having a modern brick plant ? Every thing needed is on hand but the plant and the man to push it. Samuel Buchcr and daughter Grace returned Sunday from Iowa where they visited his brother , Harry who was seriously ill but is now convalescing. It has been suggested that all liquor cases hereafter be heard by a referee instead of the coun cil and that lawyers wear five ounce gloves-on their mouths. The peculiar sound from the North which has been heard all week is neither an earthquake nor the wind. It is the wailing of the populance'at Auburn where the saloons are likewise closed. In the barber shop last Satur day afternoon the conversation was about closing of the saloons and the difficulty there was in obeying the Slocum law. "An old German who was being shav ed said , "what did Jim Slocum pass such a tarn law as tha yet ?
