, THIS FALLS CITY TRIBUNE. FRIDAY. JANUARY 5. 1906 li Railroad Taxes. Uoth Wliitaltci and the News say there was no politics in the anti-railroad ngittitiuti ; as the democratic leaders took in a. few s'imon pure republicans on the ground lloor. l 'or all there as sertions to the contrary it is evident to "many that demo- o'ratic political 'advantage was t\ie \ real motive. It was natural that republicans should be at tfie meeting as theyaredeeply interested' iiitiaUing the rail roads come lo time , and for a long time have been trying lo purge their party of rail rbad domination. At the last'repub lican slate convention the rail roud forces were routed and straight out anti-railroad men were nominated for Supreme Judge , Regents and U. S. Sena tor. There was put so strong an anti-pass resolution in the platform that the Governor and otherstateoilicialsatonce threw uj ) their rail road passes , and hereafter the e nominated by the republicans for the legisla ture and state oflices , will have to pledgutthemselvcs not to ac cept passes. Harrison.in his letter to the State Journal , laid much stre on the eflicienuy of the boycott resolution , as though a boycott was going to work wonders. In all seriousness of what use is a boycott to bring the railroads to time , when nearly every city and town in the state is crying fo'r foe more cars to move the im mouse crops ? If every mer chant and farmer in this coun ty-should stop patronizing the Burlington , it would simply lve more cars to relieve the scarcity elsewhere , and the ag gjhegate annual freight receipts o iUc. railroad would not be re duced enough to be noticable. Yet the writer was roasted ior ridiculing the boycott , it etten being charged that would be''K' ' Burlingjton candidate for tlie ' legislature. What non sense. The really' effective way to get-justice from the rail roads is to f6116\v tlie example of La Follette of Wisconsin , who , has tinally'.succeedcd' , after a live years cpntest , in getting such laws passed by the Wisconsin legislature as. make the rail roadspay tta es whether they W.a t.l pr , uol. In Wisconsin tbe NorAhweslern and tl'ie Saint Paul' the''two ' 'largest roads in the state have very'recently ' Kite' t'he. state treasury , ' .otJ OO'tiacic taxes lor 1904 and ( ItyOfh , Vhat has been done iu , Wisconsin can be done in Ne braska by the right kind of men anil the republicans will have themhithe , next legislature. 'As ' an example of how the de- nidcfats have before befogged the * voters , recall that in 190-1 , the'Board of Supervisors of this county , & -7 'o'f 'whom were demo crats , made a levy of 9 mills for county't'taxes when , in the opin. ion of many.weU posted men , a u mjll , levy wpuld have been sufficiant for all the needs of the county. This high levy made almost every ones taxes higher than they1 had been tin former years under the old reve. nue'law , and it naturally made the tax uayers angry , but tht democrats deftly turned the trick by laying it to the ue\v revenue law. In-1905 , the same Democratic Board of Supervisors played their hand again , when in direcl violation of the law , they lower ed the assessment on real estate in this county ten percent , from what the assessors had returned knowing that the republicar state board , in obedence to tht law would order the reductioi cancelled. The democrats wen cute enough this time to claiu they were the friends of the ta : payers and the reduction was made in their interest. In thii year the Board of Supervisor rs ; made a levy ot only 5 mills foi county taxes making nearlj everyone's county taxes less ; than they had been under tin the old revenue law in 1903 thus proving Hie S > mill levy of 190-1 was. not made because the county needed the money , " but was a political back Remembering the past , what is more natural than lo think the democrats are again up to their old tricks to catch the voters. The democrats will have hard work malrini ! the voters believe in their honesty , in this new anti-railroad attitude , when it is so well known that during the the few years the democrats were in power in this state , the slnte ofllcials , judges and legis Inters , all had their pockets lirf- ed with passes. We have not forgotten the trip of the demo cratic state auditor to the Yel low Stone Park in a tree special car. \ \ e also remember the Auditor was a member of the State Board whose duty it waste to assess the railroads. Of all the crowd that ( locked to Lin coln the winter the democrnts were in control of the state machinery , Sam Lichty was the only one in the State House who refu-edpasses and paid his railroad fare , and Sam was soon bounced and a more pliable man put in his place. With Sam out of the way , the Auditors oflice was run for all it was worth , one of the clerks even having his wife on the pay rolls , and it is well to remember this was Richardson County crowd. With a few exceptions 4every democrat in the legislature , bored the railroads for passes for the'mselve , their families and their friends , until the railroads put them down as the hungriest crowd they had ever encounter ed. The writer was.ou thaspo and being then a democrat used passes lo the limit. Even De mocratic Secretary of State , Porter , has never put it back. The democrats must reform themselves before the voter will take much stock in their pre tense to retorm the 'railroads. This reform must come through the republican party in this state just as it came through the republican party in Wiscon sin , and the republican party made a good beginning in tjhe last state legislature , which they are certain to follow up next fall. .
