APPLE BLOSSOMS.
Did you ever sit in our office
and listen to the boom of the
hunter's guns and be too.busy to
to get away from work ?
Did the spirit of the springtime
ever get into your being and create
a longing for the outdoors , when
you were too engaged with your
labor to spare an afternoon ?
Can you hark back through the
years to a school boy looking
dreamily out of the window to
the leafing trees and the air quivering -
ering- in the warmth of the spring
sun ? Do you remember how
green the grass was and how
purple the shadows in . the dis-
tant hills ?
Then pity the poor city man to
whom all seasons are the same.
I was talking to a young man
I
whom the world calls successful.
He lives in a great hotel and has
lived there in magnificent appart-
ments for many years To him
the years go by in monotony ; I
spring , summer , fall and winter
are the same. His school is al-
ways in session , and in the grind
of his labor there is no intermis-
sion. From his window there is
no sight but the hurrying throng
and no sound save the rattle of
traffic. There are no flower
beds in his door yard , no garden
patch beyond the kitchen porch.
He has long since forgotten the
odor of freshly turned soil.
He was going to New York to
.
finance some great business
scheme and he was telling me
about it. It may be that he expected -
pected me to be impressed though
he is not quite that sort of fellow.
However , I though it was fine ,
this living in the world of large
things , anti I told him so.
uYes" he asserted , "but one
grows tired of it after the novelty -
ty has worn off. Very often a
man's biggest work hardly seems
worth while after it is all over. "
'It may be the novelty of it is
what appeals to me , " I said. We
of the rural districts often envy
you your more eventful lives. "
HThat reminds me , " he said
turning to me "are the apple
blossoms out. "
I
The only why to insure your i "f' " . .
,
future prosperity is to trim for ,
it. All your business projects
shqpld be shaped towards a "
. definite end ; you should begin
MUS T early , and begin right ; and the - .
T RIM right way is to open and run an "
account at this bank.
FOR IT , .
.
r We are interested in you pros-
. . .
perity and offer you a helping
hand. ,

UYes" , I returned , "and gone. "
"So soon , " he said , and there
was a trace of sadness in his voice
"so soon. " He sat silent a long
time. The great scheme had be-
come inconsequential There
were greater things than busi-
'
ness. 'For fifteen years , " he
finally said , "I have intended to
visit the old place back in
Indiana. I have never had time.
There is an old orchard there
that I used to know , and that
once knew me. I have promised
myself to take this vacation dur-
ing the season of apple blossoms ,
but they are always out and gone
before I can get away. "
I looked at his face as he sat
gazing at the theatre crowd pas-
sing the window His cigar had
gone out , and his eyes were fixed I I
on that distance where the air
trembled in the spring sun , and
a boy who knew nothing of care
nor longing , played beneath the :
trees filled with birds singing
among the apple blossoms.
I would like to do bigger things
in a bigger world , but not if I
had to vainly long for God's
great outdoors-and the apple
blossoms
It would not be worth while.
THE CONGRESSIONAL
CONVENTION.
The present indications point
to an attendance of four hundred
persons at the congressional con-
vention to be held June 1. What
are we going to do towards their
entertainment ? The stranger
.
within our gates should not be
compelled to walk the streets all
night because we have failed to
provide rooms. The hotels will
not be able to care . or one-fourth
of those who will attend this con- . .
vention. Every house in town
should be thown open on this
occasion Let everyone do his
part. .
Th Omaha World-Herald used f
its entire editorial page one day 1
last week in commending Presi-
. . .
dent Roosevelt , and Hon. Norris " r
Brown , . attorney general for Ne-
braska. The oracle of democ'a
racy has evidently discovered
something good in' the efforts of
political opponents.
I
The victory of Judge Holmes
in securing the Lancaster county
congressional delegation was a
distinct defeat for what is known '
as the Burlington machine. The
"organization" had set its hearten
on Paul Clark with Tom Munger . .
s. ' "
as second choice. The writer . 1" '
saw the finish of the convention ,
and the assertion of independence
on the part of the delegates ' was
refreshing They knew better ,
what they did not want to do
than they knew what they j"J ,
wanted to do The thing they
did not want to do was to obey .
the dictation of the railroad ele-
ment. Judge Holmes is a man
of high character and ability.
The chief objection to him is his
location , and this will probably .
defeat him for the nomination.
